Quote: I have it set to 0 days but it still won't erase it. I have the 'Address' bar in my taskbar also, all of the links that I type in there just stay. What app can I get that will auto erase these at shutdown or something similar? Thanks again. ;( Go into internet options and clear the history. I believe you can set it to clear after closing IE here as well

Download the compatibility test from microsoft. It will tell you what programs/hardware are completely incompatible with xp and which devices simply need new drivers

OK. Heres the deal. My case has front panel firewire but the connection requires an internal standard firewire connector. My firewire card does not have this. Has anyone ever seen a connector to go straight from the firewire header to a female standard firewire connector? I hope you all understand. I am not sure I am using the proper lingo. If worse comes to worse, I can always buy a new card with the internal connector but I don't really want to spend the money.

Quote: visual basic .....visual c++ ...visual studio... what are the main differences ,and to whom it is designed to ? can all languages provide the same output ? my background includes programming in assembler and C (dos format). thanks...!! You would probably be more comfortable with visual c++ then. Visual basic is much less structured then C/C++. For instance, you don't have to declare variables or even the type of variable. Some people like this but i hate it. It seems to cause more problems then its worth. If you have MS Office, you can check out access's form builder or even words macro builder to see examples of visual basic code integrating with office. I spent a very small amount of time (less then an hour) looking at borland's equivilant to visual c++. The window/form builder was very intuitive but the code behind the gui wasn't. Like I said I didn't spend much time on it though. I believe visual studio is just a collection of languages put together but I am not sure about it. Hope I helped

I recently did a fatory-restore on my laptop. I then installed some windows updates. Now my computer will run for about 30 minutes (sometimes more, sometimes less) and then completely lock up. Anyone have any suggestions? I am running xp home.

OK I have finally checked out the event logs. This is what is happening. The EAPOL application (whatever that is) will start up successfully and then the "True Vector Engine" will fail. This is the message it gives. The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( True Vector Engine ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: . Anyone know what this means or what exactly these applications do?

I know there was a link to a site to do this a week or two ago but I can't seem to find it? Can someone repost it? -
Mouse button double-clicking when single-clicked.
ViolentGreen replied to ConQueso's topic in Hardware
Quote: The left mouse button my MS Explorer mouse went like that. It was really sensitive. Trying to get a single click out of it was a nightmare. I tried slowing the double click speed right down in Windows but it didn't help much. It was on my work machine, so I lived with it for a shortwhile, and then replaced the whole PC. The same mouse on a new PC is behaving properly again. Probably not the solution you were looking for though Sounds like the typical large corporation.... Your mouse breaks, you get a new machine. -
Mouse button double-clicking when single-clicked.

Quote: Seems when some of my mice age, they sometimes develop this habit. Problem is, this time, I've got a nice mouse, so I really don't want to replace it. It was doing it for a while and then not, then just as I was thinking it was a thing of the past, it's doing it again. Is there anything I can do to clean it or something? Or is it a shot microswitch that would need to be removed and replaced by soldering? I'd rather not take the mouse apart, as MS was kind enough to place the skids over the screw holes. ;( MAN this is annoying. Hitting the button hard seems to work for a more often than not single click. And sometimes while I'm holding down the button it will register release and re-hold very fast. It may sound funny but it's downright annoying. Clicking on the task bar to reopen a window to have it minimize again instantly. Repeatedly. Highlighting sections of text is a real drag to (no pun intended) as when I lift the mouse it tweaks and the highlight is gone. And as I cant release the mouse button hard, this becomes a luck of the draw repeat as necessary drill that gets old fast. Any ideas? I have never had this happen to me. Just curious, are you using USB or PS2? -

Quote: Quote: Oh, ok... I think you mean the "Corporate Downloads" section @ MS, & guys who are network administrators here no doubt have that link... http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true will do the job. Yeah, I think thats the one. I have bookmarked it and will try it out later today or tomorrow. Thanks! -
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=st...603/tc_nf/21652 This is pretty interesting. It dosen't provide many details (being from yahoo and all.) I am sure there are more details out there though. It claims to be a server that cannot be hacked. Apparently they had a contest to see who could hack it and nobody was able to. I doubt that serious hackers would participate in it though. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how well it holds up when it is finally in use.

What do you mean by "not working properly"? Did you try deleting the keyboard out of the device manager and rebooting? This should force Windows to reinstall the default driver. Other then that, I don't know. It would be interesting to see if it work correctly after uninstalling the NAV.

Quote: Could you explain that? I'm not sure what you mean. This is only applicable if you have a microphone hooked up. I am not sure that this is the problem though. Double click the little volume indicator in your system tray. If the microphone controls are displayed then click mute. If they are not displayed go to options -> properties and select microphone. Then click ok and mute. You might try up[censored] your sound card drivers as well. That or some machines have a 3D sound option in the volume properties. I always set this to the minimum because it sounds awful. I don't remember if that is the problem I was having though. What kind of sound card do you have?

Quote: yeah i have checked the memory and tried a different memory stick. I believe it is all at the right speed and stuff i am using DDR2100 mem with the 1ghz athlon is that ok? :x Are you sure the motherboard is good? If there is no post it seems to me like it's the board thats the problem. Have you tried flashing the bios?

Quote: Quote: Yeah hopefully not. I bought it from Circuit City and paid for their extended warrenty service. Hopefully they'll just give me a new one. Its a year old so I doubt they still carry it. You'll get one of equal value probably of whatever they have there in stock most likely. * That might work out just fine then for you... APK P.S.=> I know that's what CompUSA does for vidcards, so it's probably the same deal with Circuit City & mobos too odds are... apk Buying videocards at compusa can amount to renting them with an initial deposit. What I Have done for the past 3 years id buy a card with the warrenty, when you get close to the 1 year mark take it back and say it doesn't work. They will give you the full purchase value back and you can use it to buy another card. Its a pretty good deal, especially with something that changes as often as video cards. They do hike up the price about 30% more then newegg will have them for though.

I think you mean the "Corporate Downloads" section @ MS, & guys who are network administrators here no doubt have that link... PM DosFreak, Clutch, or Ds3Circuit for this because I bet that they have that bookmarked! (Part of their job is to ensure they can distribute those over their LANS/WANS probably in user logon scripts, & they'd need that...) * Good Luck, hope you find them! APK P.S.=> In the meantime, this will help... apk That is probably what I am thinking of. I havn't had time to test out your link yet. -

Quote: Techspot maybe? http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/updates/#WindowsXP * Yup, that's the one I used a few days back... it covers alot of them, but run Windows Update after it anyhow! www.windowsupdate.com had more than that page shows for me @ least! I got more even after applying all the ones for XP Pro from that site later after applying the ones on techspot... (Before applying the patches from Windows Update, you can copy them before they execute just so you know, from the MSUpdate or Windows Update folder that forms on your disk... trapping them for later use on your part! Trick I use to get them... when I cannot otherwise, but you have to be QUICK about it watching them as they come in & nabbing them just before execution, because otherwise, they cleanup off the drives once they are done running!) APK I think it was on the Microsoft site but I am not for sure. I'll give this site a look. -
Quote: Quote: The overheat protection kicked in last night where there should have been pleanty of air-flow. Then, it's heat as I secondly suspected it looks like... * Good luck in any event, & I hope you don't have to go thru the RMA exchange process... I had to wait 12 weeks one year (2001) for one on this motherboard outta Taiwan! APK Yeah hopefully not. I bought it from Circuit City and paid for their extended warrenty service. Hopefully they'll just give me a new one. Its a year old so I doubt they still carry it.

Quote: Quote: I don't know much about the event log. Ah... boy, you may be in for a treat then... EventLog IS your pal believe it or not! Run Computer Mgt. tool, & see the System & Application eventlogs, they may clue you into a software bug! If not, send any messages from it to the OEM of the potentially offending driver or program. Then, updates may issue (or maybe not, but worth a shot). I'll check it out. Quote: Quote: I am thinking also that I have a cooling problem. I am just going to put the $200 that I spent on my warrenty to use. You could do that, you're right... but, cooling is relatively cheap too! Fans are easy enough to install, & so is a GOOD copper heatsink + Arctic Silver II or better application as well. I put so many fans of large radius & high RPM (CPU ones are 8,000 rpm + 51.1 cfm displacement) here, my system can be heard thru my home & for a great distance out of my windows outside... lol, this does not wash with most folks in noise terms, but I can live with it here. I also put heatinks & fans on most of the major controller chips in my system, RAM too, + case hole drilled intake & exhalation ones as well... worth it here, to be able to overclock. (It did get expensive though, but I went WAY overboard looking back now in hindsight, it was experimentation really!) Heh, you should see a pic of the cooling setup on my GeForce 4 Ti4600... lol, large copper CPU heatsink took the place of the std. puny cooler on it, with a 23cfm fan topping it + the RAM chips on it have 486 heatsinks + fans on them! (There's pics of it in the HARDWARE "What computer part did you buy" post iirc...) Yes, a "wee-bit" outrageous, in that the cooling for it eats 2 PCI slots space up, but allows TREMENDOUS video card overclocks as well. The slots I ate up, I sold the cards for, & opted for external USB sound, & WinTV32 external USB. The REALLY neat part, performance wise of the use of USB was this: 1.) Because of the use of the external USB Extigy sound from Creative vs. their old SB16 PCI I used before, is that I can turn my PCI latency down from 32 stock in motherboard BIOS tunings to 8, & this used to mess up my old SoundBlaster-16 PCI card, no sound, this is not the case with my Extigy from Creative also... 2.) & WinTV32 USB external works as well as my old internal card from Hauppauge (both came from them) as well as internal did. * I think I spent nearly $100 on cooling for this rig alone on CPU's, vidcard, major chips on mobo, RAM, case mod fans, drive coolers, & drive bay intakes too. APK P.S.=> Yes, it was "expensive cooling overkill" but the bennies showed... this system was a 'pet-project' in cooling besides other things... apk The machine I am talking about is a laptop so the do-it-yourself cooling options are limited. Besides, I am starting to think that a fan is not working and something got too hot and burned out. The overheat protection kicked in last night where there should have been pleanty of air-flow.

I bought a OEM DVD burner that did not come with software. I assumed I could use the Nero that came with my CD-RW but the nero people are bastards and made it so it only works with that drive. Anyone know of a freeware dvd burning software? I only need it to burn data DVDs and not video (I am not sure if anything is different or not.)

Quote: Quote: Quote: Ok... how about Heat as well? We are back @ 90° F ++ days here & I am hitting crashes myself if I leave myself overclocked (I have digital gauges that are mounted to my CPU's with leads that show my CPU's topping 100° - 110° F because of it). * I have to go back to normal CPU speeds to NOT crash out, & that means no gaming (or, other "heavy-duty" type tasks) during that type of heat, to not crash. (I like summer-time, but not for computing). APK I am not overclcoking nor doing anything computer intensive. Since it crashed 5 minutes after booting and it was not physically hot, I dont think heat is a problem. I have a feeling it is driver related for some device but I am not sure which one. No EventLog error messages to help clue you into which one & zero in on it? * I agree, sounds like beat driver... APK I don't know much about the event log. I am thinking also that I have a cooling problem. I am just going to put the $200 that I spent on my warrenty to use.

Quote: Quote: I bought a OEM DVD burner that did not come with software. That's dead-up dumb! How on earth do they expect you to use it?? APK Well it was a really good deal. I bought it for $120 if I remember correctly. I didn't realize that I couldn't use the Nero that came with my CDRW. I somewhat expect to be able to do it through XPs interface like I can with CDRs

Quote: OK If I was to go ATI what should I get the Price Range would be $200 to $300. I would prefer closer to the $200 dollar mark. The best deal out there is the 9500 Pro ($140). The next step up is the 9700 ($300) and you can get the exact same performance with the 9500.
