Does everything lock up or just the mouse? Is it a cordless?

Quote: XP Home s for home, not as a work station - hence HOME XP Pro is a workstation O/S 2003 SERVER - is a server O/S i think the names say it all. Isn't the definition of a workstation is a machine that is not a server?

What software do you use for Mp3/Wav playback?

Heres an article about winamp2.x, 3 and 5 if anyone is intersted. http://news.com.com/2100-1025_3-1021601.html?tag=fd_ots -
This has got to be one of the biggest summer movie season in history. The first preview for it that I saw was during Gangs of New York (which I am buying tomorrow) over the holidays. It showed nothing but it was great. It has a different director so I am a little skeptical but I will undoubtably see it. I will probably wait until november though.

Anyone heard about these guys? Basically they are Guns N Roses minus that little b!tch Axel and with Scott Weiland singing. They have a song out that was on the hulk soundtrack called "Set Me Free" and a cover of Pink Floyd's "Money". Anyway, they put out some really rockin' music.

Quote: Quote: So it's still happening. It crashed about 5 minutes after booting. Any other suggestions? How do I go about checking for ACPI problems? Ok... how about Heat as well? We are back @ 90° F ++ days here & I am hitting crashes myself if I leave myself overclocked (I have digital gauges that are mounted to my CPU's with leads that show my CPU's topping 100° - 110° F because of it). * I have to go back to normal CPU speeds to NOT crash out, & that means no gaming (or, other "heavy-duty" type tasks) during that type of heat, to not crash. (I like summer-time, but not for computing). APK I am not overclcoking nor doing anything computer intensive. Since it crashed 5 minutes after booting and it was not physically hot, I dont think heat is a problem. I have a feeling it is driver related for some device but I am not sure which one.

XP pro is made to be a workstation. Server 2003 is made to be a server.

Which e-mail service has the best spam filtering?
ViolentGreen replied to Christianb's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: Hi Gang, I recall hearing that CNET (I think) created a new e-mail service that would actually write a user back the first time they send something and ask them to state their business or just made them verify. Does anyone know the name of this service? I think it would work for a while anyways. Thanks in Advance, Christian Blackburn That would just annoy the hell out of people. It will also probably keep you from getting legitimate email, especially for automated services. For example, you order a product online and it sends a order confirmation from an unmonitored account, unless you have that email address (which you probably won't know) in your address book or safe list, you won't get the confirmation. Same thing for any new notification that you request. I just think it would filter way too much stuff off. -
Quote: does anyone have any recent game and system performance comparisons between win2k pro and winxp pro? I have never had any gaming problems with XP Pro or Home. I cant' say about 2000 though.

This is really great, especially for all of us who share a computer with a female. John Madden Sounds! I heard this guy on Bob and Tom a few days ago. If you don't want to install them, at least download the individual sounds. http://www.frankcaliendo.com/feedback/downloads/fsmadden/download_frank_sounds_now.html

Quote: Quote: Well I updated the video drivers and that did not help a bit. Yup, might & might not... but worth doing. Quote: I was not sure where the ACPI settings were so I deleted a few power related devices in my device manager. I believe that may have taken care of it. I have not used my computer all that much since I did that though. As long as it works? It works... & it's " all good " & all that! APK Well it did crash on me last night, but it was sitting on my bed so it could have been a heat problem. The moblie xp 1700 gets REAL hot.

Quote: Check your bios chip, can cause same problems. tmarsh My money's on the battery. I say spend the $3 for a new one and pop see if it works.

Quote: I had problems like that with earlier builds of the NVidia Detonators family, circa 30.87 (this was fine, but early 4x.xx builds were not) but after that build, the early 40's sucked for me, gave me infinite nvdisp.dll errors, & lockups ALOT like what you describe. My verdict? Video driver... (But, that's based on my system & my mix of programs, OS, & data as well!) * APK That is something that i Have not updated that was updated on my previous setup. I will try that as well.

Any major fixes for it? I hear sp1 just messed everything up.

Quote: Every morning that I come in to work...our internet doesn't work. We have a cable connection...munning to a symantec vpn 100 router, then from the router into a 16 port linksys switch. If I unplug the modem for 5 - 10 seconds then rewtry, everything is fine. We run Windows 2000 Pro. Anything jumping out to you as to why this might be happening? We have a dynamic IP now but will be getting static IP's on june 25th. Will this effect our problem maybe? This is probably a simple problem for you IT techs out there =) Have you tried a simple release and renew of the ip address?

Quote: There are a few things you could check... Most of the times, repetitive computer lockups are due to ACPI problems. When you say after 30 minutes, is it 30 minutes idle or when working on it? In the Power Management icon in Control Panel check settings like automatic standby of such... Is your laptop a Compaq or Toshiba? Those needs special drivers becauses their ACPI management is different from a standard PC but the Windows XP installation will not see the difference... Ultimately check in the Device Manager under the computer tab which time of computer has been detected... Hope that does help a little bit Thanks for the response. It occurs on average about 30 minutes while I am using the machine. If I flip the screen down (thus turning the display off) and let it sit for a while, more often then not when I come back to it the screen is black but I can still see the outline of the windows on the screen. I am using a Sony VAIO laptop and I did the factory restore so the drivers should not be a problem since they worked before. I will check the device manager when I get off work today. Thanks.

Can someone explain the boot.ini file to me? I am trying to dual boot XP Pro and Mandrake 9.0 using the XP boot manager. I have a bootable floppy to get into Mandrake and copied those files to the c:\. I have tried adding the line c:\bootfile="mandrake 9.0" Is there something else to this?

Everyone I have talked to said it blew chuncks. The previews looked really corny too.

Quote: The poll asking if you'll buy the new harry potter book? Why does that surprise you? That's a big event for a lot of people. I know a lot of stores around here are having release parties, etc. starting at midnight when it's officially for sale. I'd consider it newsworthy, not my sort of thing really but definately newsworthy in it's own regard. Jim Actually the poll I was referring to was who would win in a fight between the Hulk and the Terminator. They also have an article completely devoted to this topic. We had better hurry up and get in another war before they run completely out of stuff to write about.
