Quote: Well, since you're here on NTCompatible.com and not Landis&StaefaCompatible.com, we can safely assume that you're not the drummer! So my guess is that you're either the lead guitarist, the bass guitarist or the singer! Do I get my video now?! ;( So, I have to ask, if you're old-school metal, what do you think of the new Metallica album - I just got it, it's much closer to their older work, less "poppy" - it's excellent driving music!! Rgds AndyF I havn't liked anything from them since they cut their hair. I havn't heard anything off the new album though. My music tastes have mellowed out quite a bit since I listened to them before.

I know next to nothing about windows programming. That is something that they don't teach much about where I attend. What exactly does a dll file do? This is what I'd like to do. I want to write a very small application (preferably in c/c++) that integrates into the right-click menu. I want to be able to select a folder or multiple mp3 files and create a playlist. Would a dll be able to accomplish this? If so do you know of a site that gives a tutorial on the basics of this? I have searched several times to no avail. Thanks

So I gave Borland C++ Builder 6.0 a shot. I havn't had time to do much more then fool around with it for about an hour but I am very impressed. I havn't quite figured out how to see the code behind the forms as I could in JBuilder and that makes me nervous. I have just made part of a simlpe text-editor interface in the tutorial. I am impressed with the "standard actions" (or whatever they are called.) My main gripe is that it doesn't have the toolbar images that the tutorial says it does. I am not sure how much hte full version costs but it is probably more then I am willing to spend so I don't know that I'll use it after the 60 day trial.

Quote: AMD is great for the aggressive gamer.... I got my XP 1700+ running at 1900+ speeds, Idle - 118f Full Load - 127f With stock cooler I threw on a Volcano 7+ (great hs@f) Idle - 97f Full Load - 108f really helped out! its kinda loud at high speed (around 6200 rpm) Medium seems to be great (5000 rpm) course it helps that my room is like a constant 57f lol Pat What core are you using? You should be able to get 2500 speeds with no problem on it.

The previews for the Hulk that I saw looked really corny, althought I did see a headline on fark that said that the producers/director promised it wouldn't be as corny as the previews. As for Xmen2, it was loads better then the first one, mostly because it didn't have to go into the whole history of the group. Personally, I wouldn't say it was a great movie. It was an extreemly fun movie to watch though. Sometimes thats better then a "great" movie.

Everytime I connect to the net by dialup this service runs with 99% of my cpu. I cannot make any internet connections until I manually kill this service. I have a total of 3 running. What the hell is this and how the hell can I make it stop pissing me off?

Quote: I think u have a problem with Modem Driver .So update new versions all change modem driver to standard driver for modem and see is it happend again? That is a possibility. I have just restored my laptop to factory settings and have not downloaded any drivers/updates. I'll give that a shot and then look into Avalanche's suggestion.

Quote: Quote: The only thing that would tempt me back to Win2K for gaming is HalfLife. Ever since the upgrade to XP I haven't been able to play it. Mouse control is erratic, and keyboard commands aren't much better. It was flawless under 2K though. But it's been so long since I've played it now, that I'm not bothered anymore. And with HL2 finally on the horizon, I should soon be able to get a proper game under XP Other than that though, XP has has been pretty flawless for the games I play. At least you got it to work, SOMEWHAT! I never could, that is one game I ended up giving up because of that on XP, & none of the patches cut it either. (I've been there myself, where @ least between 9x & NT 4.0, mouse related API work varied WILDLY... I would not have imagined that between 2k & XP, which to me seem SO close in nature & code, that would happen as you describe it once you got HalfLife working, but I would not doubt it either!) APK Wow. Halflife worked fine for me on two different machines running xp home and pro.

I am going to bring this back to life. I have now tried this on two different machines with no luck. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Wow. What exactly does that key do? Is it a system key or for an external application (spyware???)? -
I have an excel workbook with multiple sheets. I need to import each of these sheets into a single table in SQL Server. I can get the BULK COPY SQL command to work if I save as a csv and do some tweaking to this 20 MB excel file. Is there a way to pull the data directly from the xls, specifying the sheet? Also is the bcp command line do the same thing as the BULK COPY SQL command? THanks

Quote: Quake 2 had it's scarry moments. i really wish quake 3 wasn't just death matches and had some story and single player monster shooter action. I felt lost the whole time in quake2. Resident Evil 2 for PS made me jump several times. Like in that police interrogation room with the 2-way mirror. You're walking around picking up things and its all quiet and then that thing jumps though the mirror.

Quote: Quote: AMDs perform especially well in UT2003. Intels seem to put up better numbers in other tests. AMDs also perform well (as in the 2800+ compared to the more expensive P4 2.66) in Comanche 4 and Jedi Knight 2. The more expensive intel chip does do a bit better in Q3, not that that matters. So AMD performs better in the newer games with equal comparisons. Let's also factor in the $50 or more bucks you'd save from not needing to buy a soundblaster card, put that money toward a better video card, and the AMD solution would walk all over the intel solution in gaming. Better bang per buck, which is why I recommend the AMD/NF2 combo for gaming above any intel system. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you there completely. I just thought I'd point out that that from the benchmarks that I see, UT2003 is the only one where there is an AMD advantage. I have only seen a few Jedi Knight benchmarks and I don't think I have seen any Commanche benchmarks. I usually only look at the Anandtech site and occasionally tomshardware and amdmb so I can't say how standard the benchmarks they use are.

Quote: I am going to digress here. Swapping mobos is fine as long as you have a compatible HD controller. The easiest wayis to use an IDE add on card(or scsi) this way windows automatically has the driver loaded and will boot fine. In fact, Microsoft fully supports a motherboard swapover as long as the IDE controlle is the same. Windows has no problem reallocating the resources for yur motherboard components and PCI cards. Then you simply install the mobo chipset drivers and you are good to go. The normal advice to "reinstal fresh" is typically based on the fact that the IDE controller does not match, and windows actually wont boot. So grab a pci IDE controller(Ive got 2 promise controller, they work great for motherboard swapping) and swap away. I will reemphasize; Microsoft fully supports swapping a mobo as long as the HD controler is the same. Too, I have done it without incident. I was not aware of that. It sounds like a good Idea to invest in one if you upgrade frequently. I need to get one eventually anyway. I am using all available slots at the moment.

Quote: Quote: I know next to nothing about windows programming. * Recommended = Borland Delphi 7.0 or Borland C++ Builder 5.0 : Kylix is both of them in one box Are either of these free? I have used Borland's Free version of JBuilder for java developement and was very impressed with it (aside from the issues with it running in the JVM) Quote: (If you code in other languages, or other platforms & have put some time into it... you'll realize it's not so much syntax as it is CONCEPTS you have to know to do the task in one language/tool vs. another... you have to know the task @ hand, how to do it in one language & then you can ask the questions in the others... the RIGHT questions!) It's not the actual syntax that I am wondering about, its the integration with the shell. I have no clue where to start there. Quote: That is something that they don't teach much about where I attend. What exactly does a dll file do? Quote: I like to think of them as executeable programs that cannot launch themselves, but need other programs to call their functions for them to run (most times, they run in SAME process/memory space as calling app, called "In-Process" load... there are "Out-Of-Process" loading ones, I don't use them & have yet to do so, no need!) Quote: This is what I'd like to do. I want to write a very small application (preferably in c/c++) that integrates into the right-click menu. That's done via namespace GUIDS... those LONG registry numbers you see! Iirc, Borland Delphi AND Borland C++ ship examples of this with CopyTo & MoveTo .DLL's you can build that integrate into rightclick on files & folders in fact! Borland C++ Builder 5.0 or 6.0 would be excellent for you... It even compiles Delphi code! I am not sure I understand here. I think I just need to pull some sample code off the web. I'll see if there is a free version of one of those out there. I am in need of a slightly more modern C compiler for windows anyway. Quote: * And, it's always work... an f'ing grind, every program I have ever written of any type of size or function... everytime. It's work! APK P.S.=> If it's SUCH a grind... why do I do it? Pays for one... money is decent usually, hard mental work that actually tires you out & many times frustrates the HECK outta you (especially building new type of tools vs. stuff you did before & debugging is a PAIN, lots of things to consider... user patterns, other software & other type of Os (9x vs. NT for example) & also logic & event handlers & more... memory & CPU use, man list just goes on & on)... debugging/maintenancing others' work is tough too, but many times you learn new things this way... lots of work here too. You know, that can be the case. That's part of the attraction for me though. You have this problem that your rack yourself over and when you solve it, you actually have something to show for it.

Quote: Hmm... Nice thing about nForce2 and gaming is the mobo comes with a good surround sound built in (that is, if it's southbridge is MCP2-T), which has very low CPU utilization as does the nvidia based onboard NIC. That, and the XP 2800 and 3000 both do better in UT2003 benchmarks (botmatch and flyby) than the P4 2.4 or 2.66. Seeing as the 2800+ costs the same as the 2.4 and less than the 2.66 and performs better than both, and as you could save money utilizing the nF2 soundstorm APU instead of buying a seperate APU card, this means the money you saved could be put toward a better video card. Which means more performance for less buck. IMO, with gaming AMD and NF2 are the way to go. AMDs perform especially well in UT2003. Intels seem to put up better numbers in other tests.

One for Programmers to use, & port if they like... apk

Quote: I was stuck to dx 8.1 because it runs smooth, I have installed dx9.0a because it is a requisite for new games that doesn't work with dx8. I noticed the slowdown switching apps, and in some games when accesing to the main menu, like in Half-Life, the game seems to hang with a black screen. It is not computer related because we tested a lot of different machines, celeron 700, pentium III, AMD Thunderbird, XP 1800, 2000 pIV 1700 and pIV 3,06, with radeon 7000, 7500, 9000, 9500, 9700pro, 9800pro, geforce Ti4200, Ti4600... I think we even tested dx9 with voodoo3 (not sure) with same results. And with different operative systems, windows 2000 and windows XP... same results with them. Hope Micro$oft fixes it soon. Are games even out that require dx9?
