Oh yes, and another thing why PC's are better, didn't your mother ever tell you its not good to sit so close to the TV or to watch TV for too long I just love PC's, and its my job, dude, if there was PC's when I was born I would've been born with a PC under my arm. Talk about raising the dead....

I can't suggest what to get. I don't know your situation but generally the man downside to compressing before backup is the time it takes to compress. It will take a long ass time to compress 73 GB of data.

I'm a little confused here. Are you trying to connect to a NFS share or host one? What is the speed2demo application? -
Why is my laptop faster than desktop to resume windows?
ViolentGreen replied to sk's topic in Hardware
Isn't the problem recovering from hibernation? I would think that the bottleneck would be the disk read. I don't know what all is involved in recovering from this but I would think the CPU power would be a non factor. Is you desktop older than your laptop? -
Well at least you aren't arrogant...

Yeah, I own it and it works. You have to be more specific if you want answers.

Google for "regclean". Download it and run it and you should be good to go. APK's system tools will do the same thing I believe.

I would suggest running adaware, spybot and a virus scan as well.

Ditch IE for firefox Seriously though, APK, how do you know all these registry keys? You seem to have a registry hack for everything. -
I agree. Knoppix and Suse both have KDE based LiveCDs. There's also Gnoppix which is Gnome based. I believe Mandrake has a cd that has both environments.

Hey guys. It's been a while. I have a question that I was hoping you could answer for me. My machine no longer shuts off from windows or linux. It just reboots. I have made no hardware changes so I don't think that I would have knocked any cables loose but I have verified the internals as well. Could this be my power supply malfunctioning? Thanks folks.

Well it magicaly worked again yesterday. I have yet to shut it off since then. I've been meaning to replace my PSU and fans with something much quieter. If this starts up again I might just do that. It's a hassle to replace my psu because I seem to remember having to take everything out of my case to get it out.

I havn't changed anything in the BIOS in probably 6 months or so. It has been running fine up until a few weeks ago. Because of that and the fact that it happend for both my windows and linux installs at the same time, the only thing that makes sense to me is that there is a hardware problem somewhere...

I am having trouble with a limited user account. Every time I log on I get the series of popups listed below (left is the window title, right is the message). Code: Advanced INF Install : %REMOVE_NODIR_ERROR%AsmiHwlo : Can't open service control managerAsmiHwlo : Can't Create Driver ServiceAsmiHwlo : Can't open Driver ServiceAsGetDmi : Can't load AsmiHwIo.dll I believe the problem is with asus probe. I need to either give the user permissions to everything that the ASUS probe needs or remove it from the startup. Removing it is preferred. In MSCONFIG, I see it on the startup tab. I want to keep it in the startup for the admin accounts but remove it from the limited accounts. I looked in the group policy editor but don't see anwhere to set this. Any suggestions?

Hey folks. Don't come around much anymore. Anyway. I'm looking to get a VIA motherboard and processor to run a file server. I am having a lot of trouble finding places that sell them where they are easy to find. Newegg used to but apparently they no longer do. Does anyone have any experience finding these online (preferably in motherboard/processor combo? Also, where can I get a mini case (shuttle like) for the system? Any experience with VIA processor based systems in general? I don't need lots of processing power. I am looking for a silent system with only a hard drive running. Thanks.

I am having trouble getting lilo to install using gentoo with the 2.6.6 kernel. I am using this lilo.conf Code: boot=/dev/hda7prompttimeout=10default=gentoomap=/boot/mapimage=/boot/kernel-2.6.6 label=gentoo read-only append="devfs=mount init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda8" initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.6image=/boot/kernel-2.6.6-win4lin-r1 label=win4lin read-only append="devfs=mount init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda8" initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.6-win4lin-r1 When I run /sbin/lilo, I get the following: Code: Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure. Name change: '/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc' -> '/dev/hda' The kernel was compiled with DEVFS_FS, but 'devfs=mount' was omitted as a kernel command-line boot parameter; hence, the '/dev' directory structure does not reflect DEVFS_FS device names.Added gentoo *Added win4lin When I try to boot into lilo, my screen flashes a few times then my machine reboots reboots. I have tried using just one kernel and get the same result. The gentoo forums have been no help. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Recently, explorer has started hanging right after boot for about 30-60 seconds. During this time, if I click on the start menu or try to open explorer, I will just get the hourglass. After 30-60 seconds, whatever I clicked on will pop up and everything will be fine after that. It is only explorer that is doing it. I can click on an application shortcut on my desktop and that will load right up. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Taken care of.... emptied the prefetch folder.

I have a concert DVD that I'd like to extract the audio from to place on a mp3 player. Does anyone know of an application that will allow me to do this and will automatically break the audio file at chapters? I'd prefer an application that runs on XP but I could do linux or mac software as well. Thanks

APK P.S.=> AudioGrabber's nice work though... see if that cuts it for your purposes! apk I used audiograbber several years ago and was less then pleased with the quality of the music produced. Perhaps it's better now. Anyway, I checked the site out and I didn't see anything about dvds. There's a pretty big difference in the way cds are encoded and dvds are encoded though. I would be suprised to find an cd ripper that rips audio from dvds as well.

Quote: sorry but you are completely wrong. Have you even checked the URL? I do not share the opinion that winplosion is offered by some of the existing windows-tools. For me it looks more like a win-clone of the Exposé-function of Mac OS X. Definitely an absolutely cool function! Pete It does appear to be a lot like expose. I heard microsoft was going to put a similar feature into longhorn.
