Quote: Would it be better to use windows2000 instead of NT4 in terms of stability usability ... Definitely. Edit: I misread part of it.

You might want to check this thread out. http://www.ntcompatible.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24752 You weren't too specific so I don't knwo if it pertains to you or not. You might also want to check that you are burning no faster then your cd speed. Nero defaults to your drive's max speed.

I am looking to transfer some of my DVDs to VCDs. Does anyone know of a good ripping/encoding program to use to go to MPEG?

Quote: With Phoenix, you can add this line to the user.js file: Code: // Stop reusing active windows:user_pref("advanced.system.supportDDEExec", false); yeah well what does that have to do with anything?

I just bought a Lite-On 52x24x52 cd-r/rw that came bundled with nero. I can burn cds just fine. The problem comes when tryng to play them on a cdplayer. I can't start the first song. It just sits at time "-0:01." I can skip to track 2 and seek back near the beginning of the first song and it will work fine. I have never used Nero before and my question is, is this a Nero issue or a media issue? I havn't had time to experiment with other software or media at the moment and was just wondering if anyone else has had an issue.

Right now I am using the 0.5 build. I hear the mid to late march builds are great. I didn't find out about this until after I downloaded te 6MB file over dial-up. I'll upgrade it soon though. I really like phoenix as of now. The prefs file is a little intimi[censored] but I have only had the program four a couple of days so I havn't looked to closely at it. The first time it blocked a popup was great. I also really like the option to right click images and choose to block all images from the originating site. I hear it downloads the images anyway which kind of defeats the purpose. I assume that will be fixed in the future.

Quote: Use the lusrmgr.msc tool in your peer to peer system! Start Button, Run command, lusrmgr.msc... & that mmc.exe popup will start & let you add users from other rigs on your LAN, or should, peer to peer or not! That should allow you to add new users & into valid user groups (even stock ones) that you can assign rights to for! Then, for filesystem stuff, you use Explorer.exe later in its security & permissions tab from rightclicks on folders & files and the popup menu Properties submenu & the Security tab... Here, you can browse users & in the advanced section browse a network using the FIND feature. (IIRC, it uses NetBIOS lanmanager type UNC path names to add users, but shields you from all that madness like //OtherComputerOnYourLanNamedThis/folder stuff...) * Try that... good luck! APK Thanks. That sounds like pretty much what I am looking for. On a side note, I keep hearing of these .msc files that I didn't even know existed before coming to this forum. Is there documentation out there for these? XP and Windows in general seems to have very little documentation on anything (With the exception of things how to make a new folder and how to copy files.) Makes me realize how much I appreciae man pages.

I am into pheonix now. I still use IE on my laptop pretty often because my touchpad integrates with it. I can drag my finger from the top middle to the top left to go back a page or to the top right to go forward a page. Really great timesaving feature. I havn't checked for a phoenix extension that does the same thing.

From what I understand, the soundstorm is way better then the Audigy. It is debateable whether it is as good or better then the audigy 2. Got to www.nofrcershq.com and check the faq on the ASUS board. If that isn't enough, search the forums. There are probably a hundred of topics on this matter.

Quote: Ok please don't laugh.... How do I force IE6 to open links in the same window as the one I clicked the link in? I've tried Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>'Re-use windows for launching shortcuts' but that didn't help. That bugs me too. I don't think there is a setting for it though. You can however just drage the link to the addressbar or titlebar.

www.windowblinds.net seems to be a pretty popular one as well. I am not big on installing a bunch of software to change my theme though. I am not sure why windows is so anal about not wanting to change the appearance. I guess its so everyone can see you are using windows as opposed to something else. Quote: Thanks belveder, I am off to see some of those now... (Just to see how diff. they really can be!) * up, Up, UP & Away... & off we go to browse around there, see ya! APK

Quote: One last thing. If you should ever use Linux, get DVD::Rip (http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/). This is a simply wonderful application that can handle the entire ripping and conversion process. It is also very fast, and the defaults are good enough for the average user to just point and click, while there are more than enough options to tailor it for the advanced user. At the moment, Mandrake 9.0 is installed and that's it. I have many drivers to download including those for my DVD drive. I will remember that when/if I finally get it up and running to its fullest potential.

Quote: Quote: For now here is the URL I got mine from. http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe Let me know if that doesnt do it and I'll will try to send you mine. Ok, I found the setting in its drop list you mention... repair regedit.exe, except I think that it is more regarding repairing regedit.exe, the program itself in its views screens & resetting them to default columns it shows etc. & not the registry hives (folders like HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS, & HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG)... * If you take a read of the tips that appear in the group box below it, you will see that it says this... that's more resetting the appearances of the REGEDIT.EXE display it seems like than registry hives files restorations! APK That is entirely possible. I just remember seeing something under the repair section that mention the registry.

Have you ever had ths problem before with other 3D games? Have you tried running "memtest" to make sure your memory is working properly?

Quote: Quote: I believe there is a repair registry along with another option that slips my mind at the moment. I am not on XP right now but I am fairly certain that this is the case. Got a URL with your version, or can you email me the one you have? Thanks... I'd take it over the model I have here for XP if it has that feature! My email -> akowals1@twcny.rr.com APK P.S.=> That is, provided you can find that feature in the version you are using for XP/2k etc. I will try to remember to do it when I get off work. It's hard to remember anything when I get home though

Quote: Java has that instant garbage cleanup, correct Not exactly. From what I understand, there is a process in the VM that runs occasionally and deallocate any memory areas that are not connected with a pointer. I know for a fact that it is not instant. On several occasions, I have had to explicitly call the garbage collector. Thanks for the info everyone! I will probably mess around with C#, .NET and delphi as well this summer if time promitts.

Quote: Quote: I seem to remember that TweakUI has a "repair registry" option in the "repair" dialog. I am not sure what tihs does of the top of my head thoguh. I have it here, & I think you mean the "rebuild icons" option... unless the version I have is outta date or something (this is the XP TweakUI by the by, & the one that sits on your desktop as an executeable with .exe extension, not the older .cpl control panel ones from 9x). Actually, on mine rebuild icons is only one option of a pulldown. I believe there is a repair registry along with another option that slips my mind at the moment. I am not on XP right now but I am fairly certain that this is the case.

Quote: try this: BURN SLOWER. buning slower can be very impotant for audio cd's, and vcd/svcd's. Believe me. I bet it will work then. The CD is a 16x speed and that is what I am burning at. It works fine except for the beginning of the first song.

I am going to reveal my ignorance once again... What is C#? I have only heard of it here.

Quote: Quote: As far as I know there is no .NET developer kit that is free of charge, thus I have never used .NET. Actually, the .NET Framework SDK is free from Microsoft: Microsoft .NET Framework Software Development Kit It's just the IDE (Visual Studio) that they charge an arm and a leg for. Which is why I mentioned SharpDevelop, as it gives you a free IDE to go with the SDK. Thanks! I'll try to remember to check this out in a couple of months when I have access to a decent connection.

Quote: Nero works just fine for burning CD Audio. You just have to be aware of the pregap at the beginning of the first track. If it's not set to 2 seconds or more the track won't start playing (something to do with the Compact Disc standards I believe). Just right click on track 1 and select properties. Make sure the Pause time is 2 seconds or more. It should play just fine after that. In earlier versions of Nero I've heard of people running into issues with converting directly from mp3 to CD Audio, but everyone I heard of that had that issue said converting to wav format first fixed that. Why is this the case? I will try up[censored] Nero anyway. BTW, I just noticed that this is in the wrong forum...sorry.
