Microsoft doesn't seem to want China/Japan/S. Korea to develope their own OS because it would be an unfair competition. How ironic is that? http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=st...indows_rival_dc

Quote: Is there a way to repair windows installer in XP without reinstalling windows of course, when I try to install an application that uses this installer, it keeps looping with "Preparing to install" even if I hit cancel or the big X :x . I can't install a thing that requires it. I had a similar problem with disk cleanup in the past. There was a registry tree I needed to empty and it worked after that. My guess is that it's probably a similar situation here.

Quote: Can anyone help. I am looking for Blue tooth cards that are compatible with NT. We can not get hold of Any Com cards I have doubts as to whether Bluetooth is supportded by NT

Anyone else noticing that the new posts icon isn't showing?

Quote: This is a known issue when visiting both forums (NT Compatible and Linux Compatible). I looking right now for a replacement. Hmm... It's working now.

Quote: Download the winXP installation rescue disks from MS.http://techtips4u.com/downloads/ As far as re-partitioning. If you installed any linux you will have at minimum have made 2 partitions, a root partition and a swap parttion. You will want to repartiton so that they become 1 and format it to fats32. Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I've been wanting to get lilo out of my mbr for some time now.

Getting this dialog box asking to scan and clean my PC
ViolentGreen replied to Phalanx-Imawano's topic in Security
Quote: This is most likely an ActiveX control pop-up from a web site you've visited. Could also be a java script but most likely the former. I'd try running something like Adaware for any spybots as well, this is what I use. Could just be a specific web site you visit, if you turn off active scripting and then see if this goes away, then you know for sure. The giveaway is that the window title says "Microsoft Internet Explorer." Another indication that it is fake is if you mouse indicates that the whole window is clickable and not just the buttons. If these things are not so, it still doesn't mean it's real, the designers just made extra effort to fool you. I would suggest familiarizing yourself with the look of you AV. -
Quote: Nope...USB and Firewire aren't supported under Windows NT4. Its just too old, like Windows 95. There are third party USB drivers for NT4, but that support is pretty sketchy at best. Firewire support is just not there. I know this isn't much help, and you probably already know this....move to XP or 2000. I hate NT. I hate the fact that you cant use the Win+D shortcut. I hate the fact that you cannot select multiple windows on the taskbar with crtl+click. I hate NT.

Quote: Well, the government here have just announced that school run traffic is the cause of a lot of rush-hour jams (this research brought to you by "Pointless Research That You Already Knew, Inc") THey're bandying about a figure of 20% of rush hour traffic is school run, but I'd question whether it really was that low (I know it certainly isn't in the part of London where I live - but then my 6-mile journey to work takes me past at least 3 schools) Tony and his pals want to invest money to try to stop parents jumping in their cars - but they didn't actually explain exactly how they were going to do that! I just sit behind my steering wheel and curse the lot of them It often takes me 45 minutes to go less then two miles from my university to my house. Even more during rain/snow.

Quote: Quote: Just curious...can you boot via lilo (or whatever)? I believe you have to have a second bootloader to use window's bootloader. Thanks for the reply. Yes, my linux does boot, but i have to change the boot priority in the bios to HDD0 instead of RAID. It works, it's just that I NEED windows also. Nothig works with linux. it's good for running a cheap PII server I don't know if I see the problem then. Can you not boot into windows with lilo or do you want to screw lilo and just use the nt boot manager?

MS Virtual Machine on Win 2003 Server
ViolentGreen replied to xteox's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: January 2004 Microsoft will no longer be authorized to support the Microsoft® virtual machine... So, I don't find the VM for Windows 2003 Server. please, help me ;( I guess all those people who wrote apps that weren't compatible with Sun' Virtual Machine are going to have to learn the hard way to stick to the standards. -
Quote: I would suggest posting the XFree86 config file, so the experts can help better. Also, what model Vaio is it? I have read about issues with Intel video on some Vaio laptops. Have you tried a screen of 1024X768? Also look at the specs for the monitor and see if the horiz. and vertical rates are correct. But it seems that you get some video & no error messages, where X won't start at all, and if it is not flickering, that the screen resolution may be the issue. Yes, I have tried that screen resolution and all the available resolutions down to 800x600. My VAIO is a PCG-FXA59 running an ATI graphics card. Here is my config file. The following lines look suspicious to me: # 1024x480 @ 85.6 Hz, 48 kHz hsync ModeLine "1024x480" 65.00 1024 1032 1176 1344 480 488 494 563 -hsync -vsync Code: # File generated by XFdrake.# **********************************************************************# Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of# this file.# **********************************************************************Section "Files" # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. Is there a way to fileshare between XP Home and Pro without using Simple File Sharing? I know home doesn't allow signing on domain so thats out.
-
Quote: You can share any file and set permissions to everyone, if you don't mind everyone having access Or you can setup local account on either machine, then when you share the object you set the permissions accordingly I am still not sure that I completely understand. I know very little about networking in windows. Are you saying that I have a seperate account on each machine that I log on with using the other?

I have a case with a window and it doesn't look quite as neat inside as I would like it to. Anyone have any tips on making the PSU cables neater? I have twisted them and applied plastic ties on them but it still doesn't look as neat as I would like.

Quote: Better, create a local account on the Pro machine so the home can access. I don't follow...

Quote: Here's the latest bios revs for both the v2.xx boards and the pre-v2.xx boards http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7N8X%20Deluxe Thanks. That will save me some time looking for it. I'll make sure mine is current when I get off work.
-
Quote: By the v1.04 do you mean the firmware or the engineering rev of the mobo ;( Rev 1.04
-
Quote: Do you have the engineering rev 2.xx board or the previous version board ?!? Also you have flashed the firmware to the latest version to I presume. I have a v2.xx board and haven't noticed this problem, well not yet anyways. Hopefully it never will happen I have the 1.04 version. I believe I have the latest bios release by Asus. I'll check again though. I didn't notice it untill recently. I started noticing during deep sounds in RTCW and BF1942. I have since noticed it in winamp. All my sound levels seem to be at very conservative values.

Quote: I went through making a copy of the boot sector and copying it to floppy, so i could put it into my windows root directory. the file is called bootsect.lnx : multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect c:\bootsect.lnx="Linux Mandrake" but still nothing. it just freezes or reboots, or just sits there with blinking cursor and doesn't get anywhare. i'm beginning to hate linux. Linux works fine when i change the boot device proirity in the BIOS. any help will be appreciated Aer you sure it's the RAID that's the problem? I had this same problem with a non-raid setup. I have a post several months ago called "boot.ini". There is a step-by-step guide in the post and a link to another guide with some steps on it that I am actually planning on trying out tonight. I'll let yhou know if I have any luck. Just curious...can you boot via lilo (or whatever)? I believe you have to have a second bootloader to use window's bootloader.

Quote: If you don't have the deluxe version, I would suggest to directly use the RealTek (latest beta) drivers for the onboard sound. I use them and don't have any problems (well, not right now ) Actually I do have the deluxe version. I should have stated that

I have always used memtest86. It's a pretty small downlaod.
