Quote: while we're on the topic: how come when using the 'del' command, there is no warning about whether we want to delete the file or not? I guess it figures that if you made the effort to type it all in then you are sure you want it. Windows babies you that way though. It was hard for me to get use to unix not prompting for a confirmation. Afer a <i>rm *<\i> you are out of luck

Quote: For some reason my middle click won't work Using the Logitech Mx700 If i right click it i can open a link in a tab, but there is a setting "open links in the background" checked or unchecked makes no difference. Ctrl+Click will also open a link or bookmark in a backgroud tab. Ctrl+Shift+Click will open it in a foreground tab. I think the open links in background setting is for dealing with links outside of firebird.

Quote: How can I enable tabs by deafult on Firebird? using the newest build btw What I ended up doing is right clicking the toolbar and putting a new tab icon up there. It seems it does not want to display a tab if only one is open. I hope you find a better solution.

Quote: Quote: I know I have completely the wrong attitude about this but its hard for me to get upset about the prices of food and gas. I just think of it as I have to get it anyway, so why ***** about the prices? You can't live without food. There is little to no public transportation in my city and things are so spread out that it just isn't practical to use it so I need a car and gas. It's a good thing that everyone else doesn't feel that way about ***** about prices or we'd be in a whole lot worse shape now. I know how you feel - the greens keep saying we should ditch our cars and use public transport instead - but they've obviously never tried using buses and trains to get anywhere...especially when it usually takes longer to get somewhere by bus or train than it does by car - where's the benefit in that? My other little pet hate is parents on the school run. I drive to work (and yes, I have to - I often have to visit client sites during the day, so I need my car), and what really kills me is the traffic caused by people driving their kids to school...what ever happened to walking to school? It was good enough for me when I was at school (oh, no! I've just realised that I'm starting to sound like my parents! 8) ) . The kids have just started back to school here after the summer hols, the difference in traffic is astounding - 10 minute drive in the summer, 30 minutes now the kids are back ;( I'll get off my soapbox now AndyF Walking to school isn't really an option here. I lived about 10 miles from my high school and in college, its hard to get an appartment for a decent amount within walking distance. In larger cities like NYC, its easier and faster to not drive but for the majority of american cities, that's not an option.

Quote: I've been listening to a cd by 'Las Burbujitas Imeccables' (do not try to look them up in Amazon, these people are probably known only in Greece - only by chance though ) So, I was wondering what does 'burbujitas' mean? 'impeccables' should be 'impeccable', right? any ideas??? thanks for any time you take off work to think about this stupid request! According to google's translate tool, it translates into "The Burbujitas Imeccables" in english. Hope that helps. Actually, if I remember correctly Burbuja means "bubble". Maybe the "Perfect little bubbles" or "The Unpoppable Little Bubbles"? EDIT: When I started typing this post, no one had replied. I know it didn't take me 2 hours to type....

Quote: PLease remember those families of all the victims, and especially all the familes of soliders from the many nations that are fighting everyday to rid the world of the likes of Osama and those like him. And please support the soldiers as well. I have two friends fighting out of the country. It is unbelieveably hard to be in a foreign culture away from all friends, family and anything familier. If you know people in Iraq or wherever, even remotely, please write them and let them knw that you think of them and appreciate them. Mail call can be either the happiest or most depressing time of the day. One more thing... Please don't use this thread to rant about the illigitimacy of the Iraq war or the evils of America and the western world.

Quote: Back to the Future used to be one of my favourite films, but the one thing that annoyed me was when Christopher Lloyd uttered the words "one point twenty-one jiga watts" - kind of ruined it for me, cos a scientist would never say "one point twenty one", and would know how to pronounce giga...but I'm a scientist, and kind of anal like that AndyF Yeah, I always assumed that was done purposely though...to show his eccentricity though. Those numbers aren't too far from what I am used to here in the states. I cant really say about the housing though, I am only renting. In the area where I live you can rent a nice place for about $400 a month although in NYC I know its well into the thousands. Gas does seem high (I assume you are talking about a car and not a SUV) in the UK though. I know I have completely the wrong attitude about this but its hard for me to get upset about the prices of food and gas. I just think of it as I have to get it anyway, so why bitch about the prices? You can't live without food. There is little to no public transportation in my city and things are so spread out that it just isn't practical to use it so I need a car and gas. It's a good thing that everyone else doesn't feel that way about bitching about prices or we'd be in a whole lot worse shape now.

Quote: Geez!!! Now i don't feel so bad. Gas used to be $1.39 about 3 months ago. No one expects it to go back down in price. And just several years ago we complained when it got over $1
-
I bought for $1.54 last night in KY. It got up above 1.70 but thats' as much as I have paid. I get about 30 mpg so I suppose I pay less overall then most people. It still pisses me off when I end up paying $16 for gas.

Quote: hmm see I found NAV 2003 to be so resource heavy and really a system hog everytime I try to use it. any other experiences? I have not found that to be the case on my notebook. It's running an mobile XP1500 with 256 MB RAM which is pretty low end by todays standards.

WinXP CPU Use Percentage When nothing Running
ViolentGreen replied to SliderSchr's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: Jerry, I am not sure what processes were running at the time, I will turn it on tonight and post back to the forum. For some reason I thought it was the SPOOLSV.exe or the SVCHOST.exe, but those are guesses. SliderSchr That wouldn't suprise me if SVCHOST.exe is the culprit. I have had instances on my laptop where I have had to manually kill the process. I am interested to see whether there is a solution to this proble. Also, there was a version of PC-illian that I had an issue with where POP3Trap.exe was showing full processor usage. I know it is commonly bundled with motherboards...Not sure if it applies to you or not. -
Microsoft pissed about unfair competition
ViolentGreen replied to ViolentGreen's topic in Slack Space
Quote: IT was kind of like South Korea subsidizing Hynix If Sony and the other companies want to pool to make an OS then fine, Having the government do it is wrong I don't see where there is anything wrong with this. I didn't understand it as saying that the government would force this OS on the citizens. If these governments are tired of depending on Microsoft for the security of their systems, why not create their own OS where they would be responsible for the security and not have to wait for microsoft to release patches. -
Norton Antivirus messing with internet connection
ViolentGreen replied to Carolj's topic in Software
Quote: Here's a new development. Last night my son was able to uninstall the Norton antivirus from his computer. At first by going through the uninstall selection on the Norton program. It said it was successfully uninstalled but when he kept having problems he looked in control panel and add/remove programs and found two more things from the antivirus (I remember one was the live update). Anyway he removed those and was able to get online to check email and surf. But now today, he can only get online and check the email - he can't go to any websites. Forgive me but I don't know exactly what is happening but I believe he gets the 'website not available' screen. Any thoughts? Thanks, Carol Just a few thoughts....and forgive me if these are obvious questions. I assume you are using internet explorer. Are you certain that you are in online mode (File -> Work Offline is not checked)? You said that the email works... Do you have any other software (preferably Browsers) that connects to the internet that you can test? Also, what does the connection icon do in the system tray when you are trying to access the net? I assume 2000 has this. I know XP and 98 both do. -
WinXP and automatically logging in question
ViolentGreen replied to pr-man's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: how do I get xp to automatically log me in each time I start the computer instead of giving me the welcome screen and then requiring a password? I believe there is a setting in the user manager but I am not sure. You might just try removing the password for your user. -
Quote: The only way is to exit Kazza, not have it running. This is the same thing with winamp. When you close the winamp agen from the tool tray then it is not running anymore. Actually it is fairly easy to change the settings for winamp to keep the icon out of the tray.

Anyone know how to disable the system speaker in 2000? I am using an ancient DOS program which likes to be loud.
-
Quote: Try disabling the system speaker in the device manager under system devices. Sometimes you have the slider under volume control called PC speaker. Muting that could help. I searched for the device before and didn't find it. I found it now though. Disabling didn't make any difference. Also there is no setting under volume control; that was the first thing I checked. I am running this app from a dos promt. Is there a dos command that will disable it?

zonealarm pro Vs Mcafee Firewall 4.0
ViolentGreen replied to Radioactive Frog's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: Zonealarm Pro is what I use and it works quite well. It can block pop-up's and can be put into stealth mode. The only other firewall I like is Sygate personal but it's nearly simular to Zonealarm Pro 4.0. I have been happy with zonealarm. I havn't heard the best things about MacAfee AV but I havn't heard anything about the firewall. I say put MacAfee on for a couple of weeks and decide for yourself. -
Quote: disconnect it Well yeah, but I meant without opening it up. I meant ot say that in the original post.

Quote: Hi, does someone know how to read a DVD-Ram recorded by a Panasonic standalone recorder under Windows 2000? It`s no problem under Windows XP, even using explorer, but a no go under W2K. Any help welcome. Also suggestions for tools or programs which could help. I think its probably a drive issue. When you say it works on XP, are you using the same hardware?
-
The more memory that you have the longer it will take to resume from hibernation. If thats not an issue, then great. Microsoft has a free tool called bootvis.exe (I think) that will show you what to do to speed up your regular booting if you aer interested.

Quote: ViolentGreen, im not sure what you mean, how can I drag that one to the desktop. just to clarify what I mean --> htp://www.home.no/hipshot/run.gift (inside the red circle) nebus, Ive disabled x-shortcuts, so thats a no go. ---- update, I know why i couldent drag it Violentgreen, cause Im using the oldschool simple and neat start menu look, you cant drag from that, tested the new xpish menu, and worked fine, thanks. np...glad it worked
-
Quote: If I was to link to run through a shortcut, how would I do then? just typing run wont work, typing notepad works, is there even a 'run' thing, I hope you know what I mean, the little console you can reach via the start menu not to be mistaken for the command promt, or cmd for some. Well one way is to drag the shortcut from the start menu. It says the target is "&Run..". Just drag it though. Worked heer.

I need help with FF7 on WinXP
ViolentGreen replied to Eternalspirit's topic in Everything New Technology
Open up the xp/games forum. There are lots of FF7 posts there -
Quote: You can upgrade, but most of the laptops I've seen use mobile cpus and sometimes the're hard to get here. Also check I the laptop supports the cpu. You shouldn't have much trouble finding mobile AMDs online. I know newegg has them but they only delive in the US. I would say go for a Pentium-M or Centrino but I don't know how easy it is to update them. For a notebook that should last you a while plus they run cooler and use elss power so the battery life would increase.
