Quote: I have an EPoX 8RDA+ nForce2 motherboard and absolutely love it to bits. It has everything useful that nForce2 has to offer (Dual Channel DDR support, AGP8X, ATA133, USB2.0, Firewire, nVidia LAN, SoundStorm audio and if you get the later 2.0 or 2.1 revision boards, Ultra 400 400Mhz FSB support) without all the next to useless fluff like SATA (which gives you an extra PCI slot making a total of 6) and the second NIC like other boards. Plus, it can be had for less than USD$100 now (last price I saw was at Newegg for USD$92 although that won't really help you in Greece...). With nForce2 here, there is no sane reason whatsoever to even consider buying a Via based motherboard so do the sensible thing and avoid them like London during the Plague. I have been extreemely impressed with the nforce2 boards.

Quote: That's cuz you were running 98 Maybe so but there are a lot of people out there running 98 to this day.

Quote: I heard that same bashing too but considering WA3 ran just fine on my old 128Mb Pentium II under XP and most those that were complaining had machines that were many, many times more powerful than mine at the time I couldn't help but think they were full of shit. It did not run well at all on my old 450 MHz under 98.

Quote: Just you wait, the same dumb **** who bashed Winamp 3 for it being solely an upgrade for upgrades sake will be bashing this (and staying with Winamp2) for the same reasons. I really wish Nullsoft hadn't let all the WA3 criticism get to them and continued adding all that they'd planned to 3 instead of flushing it down the toilet by continuing to beat the dead 2.x horse... All the bashing that I heard about winamp3 (and admittably did) was the huge system resources usage and that it seemed very bloated. The original winamp was designed to do one thing and it did that one thing very well. I think that's why it was so popular.

stand alone computer running nt won't boot fter doing update
ViolentGreen replied to gupgup1's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: My friend has a computer that she bought from a business. The OS is Windows NT. It was running as a stand alone until she did the critical updates package in response to the last sobig attack. Now her computer won't boot. It appears that it is trying to connect to a network but can't so it delivers error messages. She does not have the NT disk. Is there any hope of undoing what she has done or is there a way to get the machine to run as a stand alone again if she has no disk? Her drive is not partitioned. :x Can you boot into safe mode? -
Quote: Maybe the files are set to read only I am not sure what you are getting at here... hey are read-only because they are on a CD. Thats not going to cause a CRC error. Quote: Does the CRC error come up when the file copying is almost over? Or right from the beginning or at random points? I am asking because the same has happened to me, BUT i was using 80min cdrs, overburned to 82mins.... so you see that the mp3 was there on the list, but some of them were not actually written properly on the disc -- i do recollect that nero had said that everything was recorded ok. I believe it happens at the end of the copy process (which would make sense considering how CRC works). I can see the mp3 and play it in winamp just fine. I just cannot copy it to my hard disk.

Is there a way to enable 2000s personalized menus feature (where it hides the programs that aren't used often) in XP?

"Personalized Menus" in xp
ViolentGreen replied to ViolentGreen's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: Ok, with XP Styles enabled, you must use the Classic start menu and click the Customize button to see the "Use personalized menus" option Yeah I found that last night. I am suprised it isn't available in the XP Start menu. I thought that was a erally great UI innovation -
I don't think you can without going in and manually deleting a bunch of stuff and deleting the regsitry entries. I would be afraid that windows meshes too closely with it and would not work properly afterwards.

Quote: I was actually thinking of getting a crossover cable instead for my network since it's only 2 computers. Can the crossover cables connect a desktop and laptop computer? Both computers are running Windows XP and what configurations will I have to do in order for the 2 computers to share their hard drive space and also play LAN games with each other? Thanks Yeah, thats all you need to do. Just run the network setup wizard and it'll set everything up for you. I have yet to get the file sharing working the way I want it though.

I am looking for a inexpensive IDE Controler Card. Any suggestions?

Quote: Hey, just wondering if anyone could help me with this problem. I Windows XP (SP3) my download speeds gets to around 120k/sec (which is normal, i am using 1mbit cable) but then suddenly drops, sometimes raises again then suddenly drops again. With the same servers, when i duel boot into Windows 2000 i do not have this problem, it stays on 120k/sec through the entire download. I'm using a cable modem connected to my computer via a networkcard, i had a simular problem with my old cable modem when it was USB, the cpu would spike up and the connection speed would drop, changing the modem from USB to a ethernet solved it and the cpu spikes, so it is not connection. If anyone can help i would be very greatful -Acid You aren't by any chance using pc-illian for AV protection are you? Also, check the task manager to see what process is causing the cpu usage.

Quote: With the onboard ones, they gave me no issues. You could try Promise cards, those are good too. I suppose you are referring to the onboard bios? The ones I h ave heard negative things about do not have the onboard bios.

"Personalized Menus" in xp
ViolentGreen replied to ViolentGreen's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: They are enabled by default. You can right click on the start and select properties and there you'll find this setting. I can tell you from running both xp home and pro that they are not enabled by default. I know on 2000 the option is on the general tab under the taskbar/start properties. I have yet to find it in XP. -
Quote: If may only be the program that you are using to measure the temperatures that give you different readings for 98 and for 2K. How are you getting the temperatures? That does sound very reasonable.

Quote: i upgraded one of my pcs, a P3, 550mhz from w9x to w2k and soon after, started registering high Vcore voltage of between 2.04-2.09 with cpu temp going up to 49dc/111f. adding extra fun to improve cooling only brings it down to 100f. i suspect the cpu fan though its rotating but it may not be effective. am i correct in this, and what should i do. can i continue using the pc and what are the dangers iam offering to myself if i do. should i change the cpu as a colleague suggested? help You just upgraded the os right? What was your vcore set at befoer the upgrade? You could look on the net and find what acceptable vcore for your P3 is and then lower it if you bios allows it.

Quote: Hey all how the HECk do i get reverse DNS to my IP? our work is sending out a mailing list but some providers are rejecting it because it can not find a reverse DNS look up for our IP address. HELP! Do you want to go from ip to your dns or the other way around? Either way, I think a ping or a traceroute will show both the dns and the ip.

Quote: i like nvidia graphics cards but i have yet to see any chipset for the amd platform that is anywhere near as stable as an intel chipset amd processors themselves aren't unstable but they are way too hot so no i am not just bashing for no reason i like quality i demand quality period i did make a recomendation of what i think is the best of the bunch Well he already said he want's a AMD processor. Why not give him advice relative to his situation instead of telling him to go with intel?
-
Quote: Asus the best?? you don't read nforcershq forums right? Any motherboard is going to have problems. That is by far the most sold nforce2 motherboard and thus has more people that find a problem and say how much it sucks. I am very happy with my a7n8x

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=st...tc_cmp/13100775 What do you all think of that?
-
Quote: You can use PC3200 I would suggest looking at the Kingston HyperX or the Corsair TwinX series. Both are excelent. Check your motherboard manufacturer though. Some boards have issues with both of these series of memory.
-
Quote: Till they hit 2800 or so THe New C series with 800FSB are faster in most every way, so the 2800, 3000, and 3200 are not scaled to reflect. Yeah, I realize that. But wasn't that the original purpose of the numbering system?
-
Quote: "I thought that AMD's numbering was based on performance relative to the original Athlons?" That's correct, specifically the Thunderbird socket A variety. Everything I have ever read seemed to indicate that a 2500 performs the same as a 2500 MHz pentium.
