Anyone know if there is a way to convert wma (without rights management) to mp3? I know music match doesn't do it.

    Vista Drive Mappings

Hello all. I have a dual boot vista/xp machine while I am migrating from xp to vista. On my xp install, I generally would install all programs to the D drive and keep my OS install on a seperate partition. Here lies my problem. In vista, my xp system drive (c drive in XP) is set as the "d" drive and I cannot change it. When I attempt to change it, I get the following: Quote: Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your volume. This may happen if your volume is a system or boot volume or has page files. Any suggestions?
  3. I have been meaning to try it. I don't know if I will switch over to it or not. I have 4-5 years of emails archived on my hard drive using outlook.

Sharing between XP and VIsta partitions

Hey windows gurus. I have a dual boot vista and xp machine and would like to share files between the partitions. The problem that I am running into is that my user id (S-1-5-80-95600......) is different on the two machines and I can't figure out how to explicitly give the guid permissions via the security tab. I hope that made sense. THanks

    Playing mp4 videos

Hey guys. I have some mp4 video files that I am trying to play in WMP. I have tried LOTS of things and have had no success. The 3vix codec allowed me to hear audio but no video. Anyone know how to play these?

    Playing mp4 videos

Well, I have tried the alternate players in the past and have always found them to be lacking. I like having one centralized player per OS (WMP for windows.) I prefer WMP because of the interface and because it isn't a pain to get windows media files working. I refuse to install a bunch of different applications for similar tasks.

    What is True Vector Engine?

I don't think anyone is reading my lockups thread anymore. Does anyone know what True Vector Engine is? It is failing and causing my xp home system to lockup. This is what the event logs say is happening. The EAPOL application (whatever that is) will start up successfully and then the "True Vector Engine" will fail. This is the message it gives. The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( True Vector Engine ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: . Anyone know what this means or what exactly these applications do?
  8. I need to give the administrator account (or perhaps another one instead) access to change permissions on the entire machine. I need to be able to access users local folders under the Documents And Settings directory for virus/spyware scans and other reasons. I assume that there is a way to do this using gpedit.msc but I can't determine how to do it. Can anyone help me?

Giving Administrator account ability to change permissions

Hey guys, if that had been the case, than I wouldn't have posted. On the system that I am looking at, I can take ownership of a file as the administrator but I cannot view the contents of the directory or change their permissions. Any idea on what I could do? Thanks.

    Fanless Power Supplies

Anyone have any experience with the antec fanless powersupply? How does it stay cool? If I get it would my system temp heat up?

And then the other option is to use something like Smartfan technology that many mobo manufactures use and set the thermal temps accordingly in the BIOS... Yeah, I just bought a new power supply because my old one was giving me problems. This new one is supposed to be quiet. I'm wondering if somthing else is making the fan noise. I'll try to disconnect the video card fan and see if that makes any difference. I'm hesitant to replace the CPU heatsink/fan because I am considering selling my board, XP2100 and memory to a buddy and going 64 bit.

IF SOMEONE HAS HAD IP PROBLEMS HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

So you're trying to create dedicated game servers on dial-up? First of all, are you doing the pinging on the same machine that you are pinging? If so, can you ping 127.0.0.1? That should work. Also are you sure you are pinging the correct ip address? What is the printout of "ipconfig /all" in the command prompt?

    ATI and WMP and more

I just installed the latest ATI drivers and I have two issues. First of all, I don't like the ATI Control panel link that it puts in my right click menu. Any idea how to take it out? Also, my colors have been inverted in WMP for some videos. Is there a setting that's off somewhere?

That's what I assumed was the case. It annoys me to no end.

    Fanless Power Supplies

Wow, some interesting ideas. Thanks for the responses. I don't need a completely silent PC, just something that I can't hear in every room of my apartment. I'm looking to get a EPIA based mini-itx system for a file server. A lot of those can run without any fans. The problem is that the cases are either butt-ugly or $300 (like cases from Hush and the Cubit.)

    Pocket PC Emulator

One of the groups I support is needing a Pocket PC emulator. Can someone suggest one to me? The only one that I have seen anywhere on the net is a Microsoft one but it appears to be for developers. Anyone have any experience with this one?

    Office 2000 Send to

In your home directory (C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME), there is a "Send To" directory. Look in your directory and see if it has the same things in it that your friends has.

    RAM upgrade

It depends. WHen you open up your case, all of your RAM slots will be together and be the only slots of that size. Most desktops have 2-3 slots. If you have two slots and a single 256MB DIMM (this is probably the case_, then you can just add another. On the other hand, if you have two slots and each slot has a 128MB DIMM, you'll have to remove one to upgrade.

    A7N8X-E Deluxe spontanious rebooting

Reboots are very often caused by bad memory. What revision of the A7N8X do you have? The older revisions (I have a 1.4) don't support the 400MHz FSB. I have had similar problems trying to overclock my FSB.

I have been told by a Linux instructor tht it MAY be a problem with the dhcpcd client that comes with redhat-based distros like Mandrake, so I should try DHClient. I already tried forcing the statis IP trick and that did not work **shrugg**. As for netowrk gaming it doesn't seem to affect much anyways... the NIC seems to load up just fine but not grab an IP. I'm still open to suggestions there. The sound card SEEMS to be either a clone of or a descendant of the AC97 sound card(s) so I'll try those, even though i HIGY doubt it'll work! wish me luck! What's motherboard are you using? Are you using a router? If so, in you /etc/resolve.conf is the IP address (local like 192.168.0.1) for your router listed? In you /etc/conf.d/net (location may be different on you distro), do you have somthing like Code: iface_eth0="dhcp" thats not comented out? If that's all good and you can't set a a static IP and bring up the network that way, it sounds like you don't have the correct drivers for the card. I could be wrong though; I'm no expert. Are you tied to whatever distro that you have? If not, it might be worth it to download some live cds and see if any of them detect your network. If they do, you could just install that distro. I seem to remember the Suse live cd being good. Gentoo is the way to go if you want to learn about linux and how to configure it. Gentoo is also insanely fast compared to mandrake and suse. If you have wierd hardware though I wouldn't go with ti. If you are having problems with sound, Mandrake use to include a utility called sndconfig or soundcfg or somthing like that that would help.
