Here is the scoop... One of my hard drives died. Rebuilt system (NT4PDC). Restored from backup everything successfully (registry, files, registry etc). Domain works, users can login etc. Exchange server 5.5 services, however, will not run. I've eseutil /p on all databases. I've isinteg -fix etc.. as per instructions. I've defragged databases etc.. Basically I've done everything the 60 page Microsoft White paper states with respect to Exchange Server 5.5 Disaster Recovery except one thing... My last ditch attempt is to use the Xmerge utility (to pull out the emails and then remerge them in a clean database). Unfortunately that utility is only available on the Backoffice Resource kit 5.5 (or the exchange server 5.5 resource kit). I'd happily buy it if I could but neither is available for sale. All I need is the xmerge.exe file....

FYI: If it is a Retail boxed copy it is completely legal to sell it provided that the original user doesn't continue to use it (or retain a copy of it).... Make sure to get all the proper paperwork with it (license key etc).

Hi, It could be the share permissions. When you have share permissions set and NTFS permissions set the computer will use the most restrictive of the two. Check the share permissions for the folders as well. I personally like to leave all share permissions set to Everyone full control and manage the system using only NTFS permissions (We have a small organisation and this works well for us).

Don't know if this will help but it did it for me.. First have the PC's leave the domain and join a workgroup. Reboot. Then, on the server, in server manager delete the accounts (I know you did this already but please do it again). Then wait at least 15-20 minutes (the server can take that long to remove the machine accounts fully). I'd also recommend running NEWSID (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/newsid.shtml) to change the SID and computer names so that it is impossible for the server to "remember" these machines. Reboot when Newsid tells you to. Then go to the workstation and rejoin the domain. If that doesn't work try adding Netbeui to the server (possibly run Newsid again...) temporarily, add Netbeui to the XP workstations* and remove TCP/IP from the workstations and try the above steps again. Note XP doesn't come with Netbeui built in though it is on the CD. You'll need to copy two files from the CD to two directories on your system. Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/netbeui.mspx for more info. If the netbeui option works for joining the domain then try removing it and adding TCP/IP back again. If you then have connection issues (connecting to domain) you have larger TCP/IP problems (could be DNS as an earlier post mentioned). Hope this helps

But you can install Win 2k Pro onto the hard drive without having to format or fdisk. I'd recommend renaming the Program Files Directory first. Then install Win2K Pro. Make sure not to install it into c:\winnt (assuming that's where your server install is). This option, though not an upgrade, will retain all of your files if that is an issue.

I've never used it with usernames but I do use it with computer names. net send computernames message Hope this helps.

It sounds like your switch is messed. First I'd put the hub back to make sure one of your network cards didn't choose this exact moment to die (odds are low I know.. but I've seen it happen). Then confirm the two computers can communicate. If you can communicate then you need to confirm 100% that this switch doesn't need programming. If this model definitely doesn't then it is likely a defunct switch. Note with a two PC LAN you could just use a crossover cable (make sure both cards are both set the same way - ie 100mbit, full duplex). If you can't make (or don't have the equipment to make) a crossover cable you should be able to buy one. If you want to make one then make the cable normally and on one end switch wires 1 and 3 and switch wires 2 and 6 (Basically make one end the 568B spec and the other the 568A spec). You can also try uninstalling the network card. Once I had to physically remove the card, reboot the machine so it would detect that the card was actually gone, then shutdown and reinstall the card (preferably in another slot). For some reason this forced the computer to actually reload the TCP/IP files.

Hello, I am the network administrator for our local school district. I want to run a security test with respect to email. Too often we still have staff who open attachments despite having a clear policy on "unexpected attachments" What I want to do is send out an email with an attachment that, when run, will simply email me the email address/name of the person who ran it. I don't need it to report anything else - just the name. This will allow me to setup training sessions on email security with the staff who obviously need it. Does anyone know of a simple program that will do this? thanks for your help all.

That will do excellently! Thanks! In one school the teachers all login as "teacher" so it won't specifically tell me which one ran it. But, I will be able to message all of them telling them that someone violated the email policy. The person will know they are busted without having the embarrassment of looking stupid (or getting caught). I believe they will still learn the appropriate lesson. Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure how to disable the USB printers but for the parallel ones you could disable the LPT port in the BIOS and then password the Bios so no one can get in.

It's possible your web pages are set for the specific IP address associated with that FQDN. In IIS 4 for example (which I don't have in front of me at this exact moment.. sorry...) I can set a website to respond to a specific IP or Any IP. In the MMC right click on Default Website for example and select properties. In the Web Site tab in the Web Site Identification section you should find an IP assignment option. Make sure it is set to All Unassigned. That should do it. Keep in mind the instructions I've included here are for IIS 4. Hopefully it hasn't changed much in IIS 5. Hope this helps.

It used to be called EZDrive (for Western Digital drives). This also worked for non WD drives. Nowadays look for Data Lifeguard Tools. I believe it will work on non WD drives but I'm not certain (the old EZdrive definitely did). You could also try Maxtors MaxBlast... The drive manufacturer of your drive should have something as well.

Hi, I've had this exact problem when I've had multiple gaming devices hooked up. Specifically I had it happen with the Nostromo speedpad N50. Try disconnecting all gaming devices and using the keyboard. Then, if it works, try just hooking up one of the gaming devices. It worked for me (I couldn't have the Nostromo hooked up with the sidewinder strategic commander).

I just had this exact problem a couple of days ago with a Dell system. On that one it was the power supply... You need to borrow a friends power supply (if you can) to test it for certain!

Hi Just curious, Recently, before this happened, had you updated any drivers or changed any hardware? If so try using the "Last Known Good Configuration" option (from the F8 menu option during startup). Also have you checked if "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" work? Just curious... You could also give the XP CD disk a try (to repair the install)...

Sounds like your hard drive is having issues (or possibly your hard drive controller). Do you have a friend with a spare small drive you can borrow? If so see if you can do an install off of that one in your PC. Also you can check out Western Digitals diagnostics program. It may tell you something (of course you'll need another computer with Net access to download the lifeguard tools). http://support.wdc.com/download/

Unfortunately it is likely System32.exe that is the culprit. Many viruses create a file like that because it "looks" like a system file. A quick search of www.sarc.com came up with 14 viruses that created a system32.exe file. Best bet is to update your antivirus, rescan your computer, note down exactly which virus you have then go to www.sarc.com and find the removal tools for that specific virus (assuming that the antivirus program can't clean it).... Alternately if you have another machine (with a similar OS) you can go to other machine, update the antivirus, then hook up the hard drive as a secondary drive and scan it.

You can use attrib *.* -r to remove read only from a directory (from a command prompt). Or attrib *.avi -r to remove read only from all the avi's in a directory for example.. (you can also use +r to make it read only, or +h -h to make it hidden or not hidden, or +s -s to make it a system or non system file) This however doesn't explain the problem... Just curious.. what OS and file system are you using?
