I just read a whole anti-Asus pro-Linux thing about a week ago. anyway Hope this can help you. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=121819 comment 122 of theis thread reads.... Quote: For a test, can anyone with a board try the boot.iso replacement from http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/asusp4p800-boot.iso it doesn't have a fix just a workaround, but I hope it'll boot/install already.

what is attached to irq11? can you disable it in the bios? What are your hardware specs? Did this same hardware run another OS without any problems?

    Why are you running Linux?

I'm just way more comfortable using Linux. I've been using some flavor of UNIX for 6 years now and I admin HPUX and Solaris so it's just natural for me. It give me the control I'm use to and I love the OSS community.
  6. I seem to remember being able to do it with the windows 2000 disk, I could be wrong though. Danleff's suggestion will work if my solutions fails. There is alway partition magig Now I'm curious, it's been a while since I had to do this.
  7. insert a windows disk and use fdisk mbr to remove lilo use windows fdisk to wipe out mandrake on the second partition. If this scares you I would invest in partition magic it's safe and easy to use.

    linux on ibm thinkpad

sndconfig is a solid bet. The thing that looks weird about the uname output is the i686 i686 i386 near the end of it. I use a 2.6 kernel so alsa is built into the kernel. To check if it's debian type see if you have an /etc/apt directory. here is a screenshot of my uname -a output

Kernel compiles are not that bad just a little scary. If the install is still new now is the time to do it before you get comfortable with the install, plus it's fun and you shouldn't make a sacrifice if you want to use that internal wlan Check out http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html for some tips. I'd also suggest trying out Debian. It's a little harder to get up and running but it's so much better than any RPM distro. I've used redhat and mandrake for years before switching to debian and I'm so glad I did. Plus kernel compiles are a snap in Debian. Check out this doc. http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/tutorials/kernel-pkg/index-kernel-pkg.html.en good luck and have fun.

    iTunes-esque store for Linux?

http://www.emusic.com supports linux and it runs fine on my debian box. I wrote some instructions on setting it up in gnome. on my crappy website that I never update. hey I'm a busy man. http://www.lilelvis.com/crap.html or.... Emusic and Gnome To get the Emusic Downloader working with Gnome , Galeon and Debian After running through the install instructions here all you got to do To get this to work with Galeon or Epiphany is add the following to your File types and programs. go to The Aplications menu then choose Desktop Preferences > Advanced > File types and programs. You will get this nice little box with all of your application associations in it. You can put it anywhere but I choose Audio > then Add File Type... in the Description field put whatever you want. MIME Type is application/vnd.emusic-emusic_package the filename extension is emp then add the emusic downloader as the default action. Enjoy.

Mandrake 9.2 - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Quote: Thanks for your kind offer. I'm not worried about the data - it is all backed up - I was just disappointed that it wasn't preserved when I selected the install/upgrade option. Much more important to me is to get 9.2 working. Any advice on the font server problem would be much appreciated. Well that's good news. post or send me a PM of your XF86Config-4 I'll see what I can offer up.

Mandrake 9.2 - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Ouch! Never assume your data is safe. How did you set up the partitions? Like Daper Dan said if you had a /home and did not format that partition your data is still on that disk. Post what ya know I will try to help youthe best I can.

    Desktop Shortcuts Suse 8.2

Somethings whacky if you gotta run the installer everytime. I assume you are using KDE based on your knoq statement. Unfortunaly I'm a gnome guy. but I'd try this doc. It should be pretty simple. http://www.kde.org/documentation/userguide/index.html

    Debian Linux

The install is crude but it's not hard and worth while imo. I use the bootbf2.4 to install the base from CD http://people.debian.org/~dwhedon/boot-floppies/ Then change my apt-source to the unstable branch during the net install.

    Linux and Yahoo messenger.....geez!

Don't worry if you're clicking on stuff you have X windows Gaim should work with yahoo. Just go to accounts at the login in screen click add and select protocol: yahoo add your screen name and password. if you want to use the yahoo client... from a terminal type. Code: whereis ymessenger that should give you the location of the app. If it's in your path you can type Code: ymessenger and it should launch for you. if it's not you may need to type the whole output of your whereis command. Code: /usr/bin/ymessenger ....or somthing like that. If it was me I'd use gaim or psi for everything. God luck. http://psi.affinix.com/ http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

new to linux, I need hardware help.

The only thing I would be worried about is SATA drives. I'm a Debian user so I'm not sure what RedHat has done to support these drives. You may want to do some google searches on SATA support in linux.
  25. Welcome to linux! open a terminal su to root try... Code: ifup eth0 then Code: ifconfig -a and see what you got. Did you try the mandrake control center to configure the card?
