Thanks for the help. I had completely forgotten about the taskbar thing. So, since neither IE nor Netscape now run on NT3, does anybody have an idea if Mozilla is compatible? One last thing, is it possible to install a newer version of WMP? Say v.6+. Anyway, thanks again. Oh, and the video card in the system is a Trident 2Meg VLB.

I'm currently setting up a computer for a friend. It's only a 486-66, but he wanted stability over compatibility so I'm installing NT 3.51 SP5. My question is, what basic programs will actually run on the O/S? My friend wants AIM (ugg), and IE/OE, so I want to know which versions will work on 3.51. Also, I had heard that there was a beta version of WMP (5.2?), but I'm not sure if its for 3X or NT. If it works, I'll just throw it in too. Thanks in advance for the help! Chris.

Yah, that's what i was thinking. I tried an NT4 driver and it installed but when it went through the resource selection, it said that all IRQ's were in use and the s/c couldn't be found. I'll check on 2000, but I heard that there wasn't a driver included with 2k either. Do any old NT 3.x drivers exist?

I recently installed WinXP SP1a on a AMD K6-2 system. Everything's fine, except I can't get the system's old Sound Blaster Pro 2 ISA card to work. I've searched everywhere and I can't find updated drivers for XP. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Sorry for the elementary questions, but I have never tried to use USB on an NT-based computer. So, if i install the Dell drivers, will NT recognize the webcam but just not let me use it, or will it not even be recognized? The company provides Windows 2000 and Windows XP drivers, but I assume these wouldn't work. Just want to explore all my options... Thanks in advance, Chris.

My next question, then, is where to get USB drivers for NT. I heard Dell released a universal USB driver, but does it support webcams? I can't find one universal driver that supports web cams. I think the keyboard & mouse should be pretty easy to work with, as I heard they were plug and play as long as the hardware recognized them. Tell me if i'm grossly mistaken on this though. Thanks for the help.

I have a computer with a 5-port USB 2.0 PCI card in it and I was wondering if there is anything I can do with it in NT 4.0/SP6a or if it is useless. I know the scant availablity of custom drivers for USB 1.x, but are there any for USB 2.0? I have a USB Keyboard, Mouse, and Webcam I'd like to use with NT4. If it isn't possible, is upgrading even an option? The computer is only a Cyrix MII @ 333 w/ 256 Megs of RAM. I'm afraid I may have pushed the computer and NT to its limits...

I'm glad to here that DirectPlay fixed the AOE2 problem Half-Life shouldn't have needed any OpenGL software as NT 4 comes with OpenGL 1.1. Maybe you should see if there's anyway to uninstall the downloaded OpenGL drivers? That way you could go back to using the native-NT drivers. Hope this helps. Chris.

The registry settings for DirectX are under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the registry editor application (regedit). The file that came with the patch (dx5.reg) should not have created any problems as long as you did not run the file. This is true as long as you have SP3 or higher (i'm sure you do if you have AOE2). I have AOE1 Gold and it runs without any problems with the patch and SP6a. There are two other DX patches from Microsoft (these are supported): DirectX Media 6 and the DirectX Media 6 Update for DirectAnimation go to microsoft.com/downloads and do a search for directx media 6 & DirectPlay 6.1a go to microsoft.com/downloads and do a search for directplay 6.1a I hope this helps & you get your game working again. Chris.

Be careful if your going to replace the native NT DX files with DX7 versions. The DX7 versions were never designed to run on NT and may crash the system. You might want to try the un-official dx5 patch instead. The dx files are from the 1st win2k beta and were found to work correctly on NT. Also, some DX7 distrobutions were designed for Win9x, and definitely should not be installed on NT. Chris

Not sure if this will help, but do you have the un-official DirectX 5 patch?nt4dx5 (.zip or .exe file). It may help DS problems as DS3 is sometimes unstable. Chris

Yes, that's what I'm looking at. I just was trying to junk 9x. NT is far more stable Thanks, Chris.

Thanks for the info. My laptop is only a P120, so upgrading to Win2K is out of the question . Performance wasn't bad under NT with 144 mb ram so I was trying to avoid upgrading as long as possible. Maybe it is time.... Thanks again. Chris.

I have several games that require DirectX 7 to run & would like to run them on my system. I currently have Windows NT 4.0 with SP 6A. I also have the un-official DirectX 5 patch, DirectX Media 6, & DirectPlay 6.1a. I thought I heard a while back that there was a hack to trick programs into thinking they were using a higher version of dx than was installed, but I've never found it so I'm not sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Chris.
