I'm not too sure about the terms of service for this kind of thing... but... How do I get Unleashed to work... and where would I find a nocd patch... if that'll help...

Maybe I'm just missing a dll file... but on the website for steam it says nothing about compatability with NT. Anyway... there's a new release of Counter Strike, and it's using a new thing called steam. It replaces the old WONid system, meaning, as soon as steam ends its beta versions, WON will close. Okay, so I downloaded steam, which included Counter Strike, so it was like 350mb. After installing, I try to start up, and it informs me of a missing dll file. "Kernel.dll" or "Kernel32.dll" I forget because i closed and uninstalled in an angry hissy fit. Would it be safe to throw in a kernel32.dll in the system files... would that fix it or make it worse... The half life engine was made for opengl... so its not a directx problem or anything. -EDIT- After looking for a second... kernel32.dll is in my system32 folder... and is in use... and its 370kb if that says anything... maybe i should download counter strike again?

I see... Well, thanks for info.

The procedure entry point GetLongPathNameA could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL That's the exact message... I want to replace the kernel32.dll file so bad... but i don't wanna screw over this hard drive.

im pretty sure it has no speed limit... like a lot of old games that ran normal speed on an average computer. I'm pretty sure there's a way to limit the speed... but I haven't done it for a while.

time for my second problem here with nt and some games. Half Life; in its latest update; uses DirectSound as its primary sound. For the computers that cannot use directsound... such as a computer using windowsNT... will have to open a map, close the map, and open another map to have sound again, because it takes a map load to make half life realize you need to use waveIN instead of directsound. With that being said, is there anyway to emulate DirectSound under WaveIn/WaveOut (I don't know the difference)?
-
nevermind i fixed the opengl problem. but i still have the problem with sound in half life.
-
Well, it wasn't an install type of thing... just the files.. I'm pretty sure the one that screwed it up was Opengl32.dll since that was the only one replaced.

I should start backing up files. I recently replaced my original OpenGL files with the one from this site: http://www.opengl.org/users/downloads/index.html And now whenever I go into an OpenGL game such as Half Life... the screen gets all shaky when anything moves... I know what I did was stupid but I thought there was like... better OpenGL drivers.

I'll try both of the above tonight when I have time, thanks for input, just don't have time now. Update: Found 2 minutes to escape and DirectPlay 6.1 did the trick for aoe2. thanks a million. I tried the inuse.exe before i installed dplay... but i couldnt really figure out what to do. thanks for that anyway. still have that darn sound problem in half life... I guess I can let it pass... it's really annoying though.

Ah crap! That Registry file that came with the unofficial patch must have changed the version of direct x my games detect. this just screwed up aoe2 completely... now i can't even start aoe2 up because i get the error message "Age of Empires 2 requires DirectX 6.1a or higher" Wheres the folder/registry-folder that says what version of directx i have?
-
Okay how am I supposed to replace files that are "in use"? Specifically: Dplaysry.exe - replaced Ddhelp.exe - replaced Ddraw.dll Dsound.dll okay i got the 2 exe's replaced now i just can't get the dll's in.
-
No I don't because I can't find it... but I'm looking for it now and I've found several files thanks to your nt4dx5 filename help. I'll post results later

Okay. I'm new here... and I've been looking for a site like this for a while. I'm using Windows NT 4.0 SP6.1 on this rig and don't feel like upgrading even though I have legal version of Win2000Pro. I've installed Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings with the Conquerors expansion... and I've played it before no problems on this exact machine... and there's a big problem that prevents me from playing at all. As soon as I start up a map, single player, multiplayer... whatever... the map just scrolls up to the top of the screen.. and when I try to move the screen around it just pulls back to the top. I've reinstalled and installed patches with no avail... It does the same exact thing. I remember a year or two ago when I first played this game I had the same problem... but somehow fixed it. Unluckily I forget what I did. I don't have time to ask about DirectX so I'll post that later on today.

Hm, well I didn't rename anything... I didn't actually replace anything either... Direct x 7 had a lot more files... so I just put in the direct x 7 files that direct x 3 didn't have at all... i didn't want to try and get too risky, but i will try actually replacing them sometime.
-
Hooray! I did it myself... without really downloading anything... just replacing some DX3 files with DX7... risky but it worked! w00t w00t. I'm most definately coming back to these forums... thanks for all the support.

Hehe, I know more about computers than you probably all think. I own somewhere around 26 systems... and the one I'm trying to get aoe2 isn't one of my best ones... but it sure is better than a lot. I'll search around the forums for the directx6 hack... hopefully it'll do the trick if i can find it. thanks for the input if you're wondering I don't give names to my systems. :x
-
okay.. i posted my problem there... took me a while because I've never used outlook express.
-
thanks for showing me the newsgroup... I've never used one of those before. If I don't get help from there... I'll either have to expect it from this forum or just live without AOE2.
-
too bad my display/settings doesn't have an advanced option. and yes... i know it works on nt4 without direct x... it's just a problem that seems to only happen on this system
-
Yes, latest video card drivers (intel integrated on this one... i have better) and yes i have the latest patch. Okay now... about directx. DirectX 3 doesn't go very far... and I hear of people having DirectX 4 or 5 on their WinNT4.0. How would I go about doing this? And I cannot find any sites containing DX4 or 5. Thanks for your input and I plan on visiting here often as a WinNT/2000 user.
