i was wondering if there is a way for linux to be able to write to an ntfs partition or am i fighting a lost cause as i want to share files between windows and linux, and i dont really want to have a fat partition on my pc if i can help it.
-
just found this what do you think? Quote: I read and studied and found an answer: Captive (captive is a patch/extension for a linux/GNU kernel so the computer can read-write on a ntfs, VFAT, etc...) Captive mount a ntfs drive so it can read, write and compress... Now the problem.... I can: mimithebrain@h___ # mount -t captive-ntfs /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows

-
thanks everyone, i guess i'll keep a fat32 partition to transfer files, and hopefully soon linux will be able to write to ntfs.

i agree about gnome and kde being good, i've found that kde is the easiest to use, but i quite like icewm but everyone has their personal preference

ok, been using linux for a while now, started with mandrake 9.0 - gave me grief detecting and using some hardware, changed to 9.1 was ok while i was learning, but as soon as i tried to do anything interesting it decided to rebel on me, out of frustration i upgraded to 9.2 - worst thing i could have done. in between all of this i've played with red had 7.3 also was a pain. now i want a new distro that works reasonably well, anyone with suggestions i'm all ears.

is there a novell client for linux, and if there is does anyone know where to find it?
-
ok well i'm running mandrake 9.1 at work, with the windows workstations mostly being 2000. i loaded samba for the windows part, and then for novell i loaded ncpfs, and a novell client for linux (the link is in the above posts). i've also got linneighborhood installed. hope this helps.

currently running mandrake, on a network of netware servers and windows workstattions. so if thats what you mean then i guess i am.

ok my hardware specs : AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1gb RAM, Epox Nforce2 Motherboard, 120Gb HDD space, On board GEforce4 128mb Graphics, LG DVD Rom, LG DVD Writer. ok first all the mandrake versions gave trouble with me trying to run Java SDK 1.4.2 as well as trying to compile Java files (i do alot of Java work), also didnt like me compiling programs from source but on the other hand not all rpm's worked. also wouldnt recognize my writer as a writer, no matter what i tried. red hat gave problems with my rom and writer, and my screen card. i want a distro that has programs that work properlyand wont have a problem with java. i currently have a dual boot with xp.
-
guess you got it to work :-)
-
solved my problem - when i installed it it asked for the closest distribution to mine and i chose red hat install, (the other option was debian install) so when i chose the debian install it works fine. i did have nfs installed.

i work at a technikon, for the lab team, basically keeping the computer labs up and running, my problem is that we've been told to set up a linux windows dual boot system, this would be okay except for the fact that windows cant read the linux partition and if you happen to click on that partition, would tell you that it isnt formatted and would you like to format it now. is there any way to somehow prevent this from happening in windows as all the students i know would most likely format that partition. if anyone has any ideas about this please let me know.
