Well thats all kinda void, it never worked, i also did a File / Run "cmd" from the task manager to get into the prompt but again that never worked. Not sure what else i can do here, i am dueling booting in (got a back up OS), if i could get into the registory for that installation on here that would be good.... Anymore ideas? -Acid

Hey thanks - right now i am duel booting. Yes taskmnger is loading, but i cant open any .exes from file/run so i cannot load the registory editor. Can i do this from my second OS? (XP as well). Edit I have also tried replacing the explorer.exe - made no difference, so i am guessing something has "hijacked" the shell from loading up, how could i fix this from my duel booted OS? I really need to avoid reinstalling XP this time Thanks -Acid

Hey guys hoping you can help me here... When i try to boot up windows, it gets as far as the log in screen, i login but explorer doesnt load up, theres no errors appearing, i give it about 10 minutes. I can do a ctrl-alt-del and get into the process bar to confirm explorer isnt loading. I can also confirm explorer.exe is in c:\windows. This occured when i used a program called The Cleaner to scan and remove some trojens (i think about 7 were found, 2 trojens, the rest adware and "browser" hijacks). After that my computer went a lil insane I am tempted to copy over explorer.exe from the windows CD and replace the one in C: just incase something messed up. If anyone else has any other ideas pleeeeeeeease let me know, i'll be checking this in the morning Thanks in advance. ---- Windows XP Pro SP2 2600+ AMD Athlon SB Live Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb etc. -Acid

Welp, apprantly my MOBO and GFX card both support AGP x8 or 8x (whatever ;P) so i was wondering.... are there any noticable advantages in enabling this option in my mobo? -Acid

I'm not too sure if its the "Barton" core, its brand new from PC World, it says on the packaging for it 2.6 GHz, then below something like 2.06GHz (which is what it should run at apprantly). So how can i get it to run that that efficancy? Even if the bus speed is 333 for the mobo, the mobo has it set at 166MHz so that cannot be efficant, right? Quote: Note: If you have PC2700 (DDR333) memory you should be all set. If you only have PC2100 (DDR266) memory, you need to go into the BIOS setup and make sure the "DRAM Clock" setting is set to either "By SPD" or "133MHz" I have two 256MBs of DDR Ram, one is 333MHz the other is 266MHz Edit 2: Checked the BIOS for this, the options i have are By SPD, 133, 166. By SPD was selected. I'm trying to find the casing for the CPU so i can be more spacific, right now i am going by memory. I told the guy in-store that it was running at 1.53GHz, he said "Odd".... very helpful lol. Any more ideas guys that could solve this? I want to get the most out of my cpu Thanks! Edit: Still looking for the case of it but to make life easier, here is the info from where i bought it. From here the info is: Model - AMD XP2600+ # 2083 mhz Core Speed # 333 mhz System Bus # 128 Kb Level 1 Cache Core Speed 2083 mhz System Bus 333 mhz Level 1 Cache 128 Kb Level 2 Cache 256 Kb Total Cache 384 Kb Architecture QuantiSpeed Hope this helps - arch i want my fast speed lol -Acid

Hola I recently bought a new MSI KM4M Series (VIA KM400 Chipset) mobo, i installed a 2.6 GHz AMD Athlon XP (apprantly thats meant to run at around 2GHz or such, as AMD Tell you the Effectantcy and the actualy clock speed, while windows xp recognises it as a "AMD Athlon XP 2000+" it shows it is running at a clock speed of 1.53GHz. Does anyone know why? One theory i have is the clock freqancy, it is 266 on the cpu but using the mobo jumpers the highist u can set it is 166 or so, I cannot find anything the BIOS to change this. I'm using: XP SP1 512MB DDR Ram GF4 2 Hard Drives SB Live CD RW and normal CD Drive 500w power supply Any advice or ideas? (And yes i did try it on another motherboard, i thought it may be faulty) Thanks -Acid

Yeah i did that, i did that first then fixmbr, and still ntldir error or something of the sort.... very fustrating... i am considering copying over the ntloader and stuff after i do the clone.... i wish i know what files exactly are the boot files required

What if i installed XP on C:\ fresh, copied that file along with the boot.ini to my backup/program file hard drive, then copy it back over to c:\ after i clone? Think it would work? -acid
-
Refer to: http://www.ntcompatible.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26008 I did it the clone, E:\ to C:\ - boot.ini and of course the boot sector was lost. It also re-sized my hard drive to 10gig (as E:\ was) but in partition magic it showed it as 30gig.... Anyway, when rebooting, i got something like "ntldir cannot be detected" or something, i cant remember offhand (having to write this from college).... Any ideas on what to do? I did go into the repair cons and do a fixmbr but that didnt help.... I'm going to reinstall XP onto C:\ and then have a go at it again, but i need another working way Hopefully someone can help! Thanks a lot! -Acid
-
Cool thanks - do you think it will re-size my hard drive as its cloneing 10 gig to a 30gig? Also, any other tips, hints, programs anything? id be greatful, just worried dont wanna mess up thanks a lot! -Acid

How does that differ from Norton Ghost? And, Drive Image or Drive Copy from Powerquest? AND, would it make a boot sector? remember i am "cloneing" a partition, from drive E, which has no boot sector.... -Acid

Hola, hopeing someone can help me with this I wanted to test XP, so i created a partition, installed it etc. etc. - VERY happy with it, i have it set up nicely, runs smooth and fast, Cubase and other programs i use run beautifully.... Now, i have most applications and games installed on my D: Drive (XP is on E, 2k is on the main, C:\) However, id like to move my XP over to the main hard drive, of course i cant format it and copy the partion to the hard drive as the boot sector is on the c:. Some advice i was given was to either create an image of E and then restore that image to C (again no boot sector?) or use Norton Ghost to clone the partion to the C: drive, but again there would be no boot sector, right? Altho i was told i could do this, then put my XP boot cd in and restore the boot sector? not sure how tho! The reason i want to copy it over is i dont want to loose my settings, applications,i dont want to be reinstalling them all, i dont have CDs for some of them now etc etc. Can anyone give me a solid answer on how to do this safely pleaseeeeeeeee??? Thanks a lot -Acid

Quote: Remove any protocols or services you are not using with your network card, including QOS That made no difference i dont think. Quote: You aren't by any chance using pc-illian for AV protection are you? Also, check the task manager to see what process is causing the cpu usage. Nope i am not and i dont have the CPU problem anymore, changing from a USB connection to ethernet one solved that (thanks to these wonderful forums ) Any other ideas? It cannot be a hardware problem as it works perfectly within Windows 2000 -acid
