Not to be insulting but i think people who love windows are ignorent about the other options out there, if you don't want to go with linux because its to "hard" to use try going with a mac they're fast , powerful, stable, and easy to use as far as windows goes i refuse to use an operating system that has flaws purposely designed in it

for your sound card i would check out suse's website to see if it is listed on their supported hardware list. if it is listed as yes it shouldn't be to hard to get it to work (at least thats the theory )
-
well if anyone actually does ansere "theres another os" i would have to seriously question their mental capacity as far as my favorite app running on linux it does but thats not my reason for useing linux my reson for useing linux is 1 microsoft is hellspawn and 2. i didn't have enough money for a mac when i started to use linux and now my reason is i just can't stop useing it i like having a os that is capable of doing almost anything with enough work. I run SuSE 8.2 pro and i personally have had no problems with digital camereas do what blueworm said and it should work. as far as finding a driver for it i would be really suprised if you found one for this simple reason, you don't need one. plug it in and suse should detect it as an usb storage device. if you kept the defalt setting for mounting hardware it should be detected automaticaly and an icon should show up on your desktop (something like sda or sda1 ect...) (i turned this feature off but if you haven't, you shouldn't have any problems) linux isn't like windows you don't need drivers for every seperate thing you plug in. you can also forget about wondows drivers with wine it just doesn't work wine works for programs, not hardware there are programs for hardware made for windows (like winmodems) anyway i've used a couple olympus cameras with my system few nikon's and a fuji and have never had to install drivers, you just don't need them well good luck with the camera as far as the sound there are many drivers out there that the companies that make the hardware have not made, but others have. when looking for drivers try looking at other sources than the company that made the hardware.

Good computers with linux gaming. A good combination?
PenguinBiker replied to Tekchip's topic in Linux Games
i would buy a prebiult pre installed gentoo system for gaming but i would have to be able to have input on some of the packeges installed (i honestly don't know how well package requests would work if at all) becuase if your selling computers thats alot of work to put custimized installs on several systems i suppose it would work great for people who want gentoo or debian (or suse or redhat for some of those who are new to linux) but don't want to have to install it themselves -
man another potential linux user turned back to the devil of windows

How do you install UT2003 mutators and skins?
PenguinBiker replied to PenguinBiker's topic in Linux Games
Ok i've tried alot of different things like the ini file but when i start the game up it just isn't there most my other mutators are there but not ut2003 rpg i've tried redownloading it from different sites so i'm pretty shure that the problem isn't with the file. (with my luck it will probably be something simple) -
Linux will not boot past "INIT: version 2.84 booting!
PenguinBiker replied to dcdjservices's topic in Everything Linux
sorry for being a bit off topic but i would just like to mention that in the future when buying a computer stay away from gateway they cut as many corners as possible. the hardware that they use is bad and getting worse (my last computer was a gateway and i had to replace everything but the case and have heard about many people with similar experiances) portage central high school recently bought 10 new gateways for the school newpaper (i'm on the newpaper staff) and 1 of them shipped with a bad cd-rom drive, one with a bad floppy, one with motherboard problems, and one with a hard drive that died 2 weeks after we got it. It seems unbeleiveable but its true. this is out of ten computers TEN! thats 40% of the computers that came with hardware problems.by the way they each costed $1000. so once the warrenty runs out if you have to replace hardware don't replace it with stuff from gateway which usually cames from the lowest bidder As far as compatability is concerned its like Admiral LSD said, Quote: Linux is compatible with anything provided you're willing to put the time and effort in to make some things work (theres even a distro out for a ti-86 calculator) -

Having problems installing *any* Linux
PenguinBiker replied to the mahcaws gillifish's topic in Everything Linux
I would take a look at SuSe 8.2 pro. I currently use it but i am going to switch to gentoo because i want something more advanced. i found that SuSe was remarkably easy to learn how to use and system configuation is made alot easier to learn with YaST2 if you can't get burned cds to work i would try a bought copy (some computers and software have problems with iso's) for a beginner i would recomend SuSe 8.2 or Mandrake 9 (stay away from 9.1) once you learn it and get into linux you will never switch back to the hellspawn of windows -
I currently use SuSe (i say currently because i am going to switch to gentoo or debian) i get that exact same problem and i just turned it off through contol center.
-
When i first saw this thread i voted for suse but after looking at some of the more advanced options my opinion is leaning towards gentoo (one of my firends uses it and has over 160 gb filled with games and no that is not a typo) lately my computer has seemed a bit... off while SuSe has great support (its usb support rules) it lacks in other areas like good solid porformance (as least in my experiance) in my opinion SuSe is a great distribution but there are better ones out there (gentoo)

How do you install UT2003 mutators and skins?
PenguinBiker replied to PenguinBiker's topic in Linux Games
Ok i got most skins to work, the ones i couldn't were ones i can deal without but this one mutator i can't seem to get running is UT2003 rpg http://www.ut2003files.com/file.info?ID=16432 i don't know what ecactly the problem is i'll post again when i figure out more anyone else get this to run? -
well i haven't used half life for linux yet but i do run UT2003 and i ran it on winxp (wich is completly gone from my computer ) and its performance in linux was much better than in windows. in windows i couldn't even think about running at a res of 1024x768 which is what i run it as in linux.

didn't Transgaming released a copy of sims that runs natively?
-
ok while i think i'll go with gentoo i'll try a cd boot version of gentoo and Knoppix before i make a final decision. does knoppix have that get_apt command?
-
i think i'll go with gentoo just a note while i have a ethernet card i do not have an accual broadband connection i use a external v.92/v.44 modem so i'll order the cd's from their site
-
Well as far as i'm concerrned games on my desktop is esential its one of the reasons i got the computer i did. (laptops are another story) Game support under linux is getting better at a fast rate as more big companies release their titles for linux (i took winblows xp off my computer after it needed to be reinstalled for the 5th time) i think towards the end windows rg (http://people.freenet.de/sDuke/index.html) would have worked better but as far as windows multiplayer games suport goes its not quite, there yet (but it is getting better rapidly)
