That sounds pretty weird! I would think there is a misconfiguration somewhere with either your video card or your monitor. Did you fiddle with any of those settings just prior to the problems occurring?
-
Don't discount yourselves as well! I've seen y'all give good advice to new users. I've been thinking about why it is we get so many complete "Noobies" here as opposed to some of the other Linux boards I visit. Since hardware problems are the very first obstacle new users run into, they're naturally gonna seek help in that area of learning Linux first. zenarcher, I too can remember the first time I sought help on a Linux board and had an equally unpleasant experience. I really didn't understand the concept of "becoming root." Although I did get help, I also got a few snide remarks from a few of the more experienced. Even if you've only had a single week trying to learn Linux, that's week of experience that can be used to help out the next new user who comes along.

I'm considering getting one. Any recommendations?
-
Thanks egorgry, I'll check those out!

Do you get any errors when booting to other DEs?
-
It would make sense. That shows you how little experience I have with KDE...
-
The only thing I can think of at this point is to try regular Knoppix and see if it will format those partitions. If it will then there must be something going on with the Kanotix installer.
-
I wish I could help with that grub problem! Anyway, I got Pro Mepis up and running, and it is really sweet! Great distro! The only problem I had, and it's a minor one is kwifimanager is set to run when you bring up KDE, but it won't detect my network. If I close it completely down, then re-initialize it, it finds my network! I 'm not sure why this is... I can't figure out where its running from either. I've looked in bash.profile, bash.rc among other places and can't find it. It is the last thing to run after the desktop and toolbar are completely up. Anyone have any idea where kwifimanager may be automatically starting up from?
-
It gets stuck at 3%. After several attempts, I got it going...
-
The error is: "Failed to prepare chosen partitions. Returning to step 1." I've tried it with ext3 and rieser and can't get beyond this...

Houston, we have a problem. I just tried upgrading my wifes Toshiba Satellite laptop from Mepis RC4 to ProMepis Beta 3, and it will not let me continue after choosing the partitions. My setup is: hda1 - swap hda5 - / hda6 - /home After telling the partition/format manager to install to those partitions, formating hda1 and hda2, and preserving data on hda6, it throws you back to the begining with an error that it couldn't be done. Such a shame! What a very impressive distro!! Anyone have an idea what could be wrong? Jmax3, did you run into this problem?? jimf43, WHERE ARE YOU??

How can you be sure files are completely erased/wiped?
Dapper Dan posted a topic in Everything Linux
I just fired an individual at my radio station for using Firefox to view obscene, (and possibly illegal), picture files off the Internet. I can't believe someone could be so stupid as to think they could get away with this. I happened to look at the history and cookies for something else and got this surprise instead. Strangely enough, this is the second time in about three years I've had to fire someone for this. I've since deleted the Firefox history, cached files and cookies, and deleted its home configuration file and created a new one, but I don't know if that is all I need to do. I won't have this problem anymore though cause I disabled all the browsers except Links text browser. My announcers can still retrieve the information they need off the Internet just without any pictures. We all know with Microsoft there are still files on your computer even after they are "deleted." What is the case with Linux? Is what I have done enough or are there other things I need to do to insure everything is wiped? -
I just got through booting Pro Mepis 2005 Beta 3 and it is truely smokin! I can't wait to install it to my wife's laptop! Anyway, have you tried installing grub to a /boot partition insead of to the MBR? I don't know if that will solve your problem but it may be worth a try. It's a shame you can't utilize boot floppies anymore!
-
When setting up partitions for a dual boot scenario, QTparted can cause a lot of problems. Can you possibly get a hold of a copy of Partition Magic? By the way, can you still boot Windows?
-
What did you use to create the new partitions? The Kanotix installer won't allow you to format the blank space you opened up for it?
-
Did you format the partition? How is your hard drive laid out exactly with the new partitions?

Hi soulNOTHING, Im running into this problem right now. With RH/Fedora you could turn this off, there is a risk but I did it a long time with RH/Fedora and had no problems. danleff, is there any Linux utility that will resize Windows partitions without loss of Windows data, fat32 and NTFS? Can it be done with the Mandrake partitioning utility? It's been so long since I've had a Windows partition I can't remember.
-
Good luck! I'll let you know if I learn anything more... dapper

Sorry egogry, I guess we were posting just about the same time.

Tell us exactly what happens and what is on the screen when you try to boot. How far do you get? Did you do anything to try to fix it? what dod you do?

My wife's father gave us a Canon PowerShot A85 digital camera for Christmas. On the back of the box it stated you could use it with Windows and Mac. I've never fooled with digital cameras in my life, let alone knew how to download the image files to a computer. I got the batteries and flash reader installed and took some great shots, but was really sweating it out on the drive home whether I would be able to download the pictures to SuSE via the provided USB cable. If I couldn't figure it out then we'd just have to suffer because I will not install Windows just to download pictures. I tried mounting the flash reader and that didn't work. Then I read online about gphoto2. I opened up a terminal, found it's options and did: gphoto2 --get-all-raw-data And all the files downloaded right to my home directory! I thought this was gonna be hard! Check out the cameras gphoto2 supports: Code: dapper@dan:~> gphoto2 --list-camerasNumber of supported cameras: 450Supported cameras: "AEG Snap 300" "Agfa ePhoto 1280" "Agfa ePhoto 1680" "Agfa ePhoto 307" "Agfa ePhoto 780" "Agfa ePhoto 780C" "Agfa ePhoto CL18" "Agfa ePhoto CL20" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Aiptek 1.3 mega PocketCam" (TESTING) "Aiptek PalmCam Trio" "Aiptek Pencam" (TESTING) "Aiptek PenCam Trio" "Aiptek Pencam without flash" (TESTING) "Aiptek Smart Megacam" (TESTING) "Apple QuickTake 200" "Apple QuickTake 200" "Argus DC-100" "Argus DC-1500" "Argus DC-1510" "Argus DC-2000" "Argus DC-2200" "Barbie" "Benq DC1300" (TESTING) "Canon Digital IXUS" "Canon Digital IXUS 2 (PTP mode)" "Canon Digital IXUS 300" "Canon Digital IXUS 330" "Canon Digital IXUS 400" "Canon Digital IXUS 400 (PTP mode)" "Canon Digital IXUS 500 (PTP mode)" "Canon Digital IXUS i (PTP mode)" "Canon Digital IXUS II (normal mode)" "Canon DIGITAL IXUS v" "Canon Digital IXUS v2" "Canon Digital IXUS v3 (normal mode)" "Canon Digital IXUS v3 (PTP mode)" "Canon Digital unknown 3" "Canon EOS 10D" "Canon EOS 300D (normal mode)" "Canon EOS 300D (PTP mode)" "Canon EOS D30" "Canon EOS D60" "Canon EOS Digital Rebel (normal mode)" "Canon EOS Digital Rebel (PTP mode)" "Canon EOS Kiss Digital (normal mode)" "Canon EOS Kiss Digital (PTP mode)" "Canon IXY DIGITAL" "Canon IXY DIGITAL 300" "Canon MV630i" "Canon MV650i" "Canon MVX2i" "Canon Optura 10" "Canon Optura 20" "Canon Optura 200 MC" "Canon PowerShot A10" "Canon PowerShot A100" "Canon PowerShot A20" "Canon PowerShot A200" "Canon PowerShot A30" "Canon PowerShot A300" "Canon PowerShot A40" "Canon PowerShot A5" "Canon PowerShot A5 Zoom" "Canon PowerShot A50" "Canon PowerShot A60" "Canon PowerShot A60 (PTP)" "Canon PowerShot A70" "Canon PowerShot A70 (PTP)" "Canon PowerShot A80 (normal mode)" "Canon PowerShot A80 (PTP)" "Canon PowerShot G1" "Canon PowerShot G2" "Canon PowerShot G3 (normal mode)" "Canon PowerShot G3 (PTP mode)" "Canon PowerShot G5 (normal mode)" "Canon PowerShot G5 (PTP mode)" "Canon PowerShot Pro70" "Canon PowerShot Pro90 IS" "Canon PowerShot S10" "Canon PowerShot S100" "Canon PowerShot S110" "Canon PowerShot S20" "Canon PowerShot S200" "Canon PowerShot S230 (normal mode)" "Canon PowerShot S230 (PTP mode)" "Canon PowerShot S30" "Canon PowerShot S300" "Canon PowerShot S40" "Canon PowerShot S400" "Canon PowerShot S45 (normal mode)" "Canon PowerShot S45 (PTP mode)" "Canon PowerShot S50 (normal mode)" "Canon PowerShot S50 (PTP mode)" "Canon PowerShot SD100 (normal mode)" "Canon PowerShot unknown 1" "Canon PowerShot unknown 2" "Canon PowerShot unknown 5" "Canon ZR70MC" "Casio LV 10" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Casio QV10" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Casio QV100" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Casio QV10A" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Casio QV300" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Casio QV70" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Casio QV700" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Casio QV770" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Che-ez Snap" (EXPERIMENTAL) "Che-ez! It sure is! Y'all know how it is... You run into a new challenge like this, having been put into the position of finding a Linux alternative to something that is normally done with Windows, and you want and need for there to be an answer. Even though my father-in-law knows we use Linux, (and he doesn't know Linux), he makes the common mistake of telling me how to do it in Windows, saying, " You just open up, "My Computer," and look for "E" or "F" drive...blah...blah...blah..." And the whole time he's telling me, I'm trying to figure out how to get it done from the command line, and having anxiety about it. Then I find gphoto2 and Digikam, and it gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling I felt the first time I had the pleasure of permanently nuking and paving a Windows partition to make more room for Linux...
-
Did some more research on this and found out SuSE and most of the distros already have a frontend for gphoto2 called Digikam! What a neat program! After configuring it to recognize your camera, it mounts the picture files on the CompactFlash, and you can drag and drop the ones you want to download right into a folder! I'm sure you old hands at this digital photography stuff already knew about Digikam, but since all this is new to me, I thought I'd share it with anyone else who might come along and not know.

Found it! Read this thread and see if it helps.
