    GRUB Hard Disk Error

When it gave you the opportunity, did you create a boot floppy? Did you use a utility to partition your hard drive from Windows, or just allow Fedora to do the work? How did you set up your partition scheme?

Which distro can be configed the best?

Mepis is good in Debian. Fedora Core offer apt-get RPM which works pretty much the same. SuSE has Yast which is very easy to install packages with.

SMC 2532W-B on fedora core 2

The "drivers" are already in your Linux distro, you just have to get the configuration right to make it work. Do this: pull the card out and reboot. Kudzu should then say it has been removed and offer you the oportunity to Delete the configuration. Do that. Then reboot again, and let kudzu find it again. This time, tell kudzu to configure it. When you are at your desktop, do: system-configure network and click the hardware tab. You should see your SMC there and configured under eth0 or eth1. Do this much and tell me what happens...

SUSE Pro 9.1 noob install...noob questions..

If you have the 9.1 cds you are in for the easiest Linux install I've ever encountered. Make sure you have everything exactly as you want it before "pulling the trigger." It may take you a few times to get familiar enough with it to get it just right though.

mjstone03, do you by chance have Yahoo messenger on another computer besides your laptop? Maybe we could set up a time to get your PCMCIA card working. I might be able to "talk" you through it that way... Let me know. If not, we can still try to get you configured here...
  7. I've been trying for almost a week to get my Netgear MA311 wireless pci card to configure and become operational but NOTHING works! I bought this card because wvlan-linux said it used prism2 so I thought it wouldn't be that much trouble. I've tried it under Mdk 10 with the 2.6 and 2.4 kernel, I've tried it under Mdk 9, Fedora Core1, Morphix Gnome, Kanotix, Knoppix STD, Damn small, and nothing makes this card work! I go: modprobe orinoco_pci which returns no errors then: iwconfig eth0 mode ad-hoc nick "" essid "dapper" channel 6 ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.105 ifconfig eth0 up The light on the card stops flashing at this point but iI cannot connect. I've tried it on eth1 and eth0, and neither works. This is very frustrating in that I've read on line where others report this card working, but when I try the methods they say, it still will not work! Hell, I even installed Windows 98 to see if I could get it working with it! Although I didn't know how to make it connect to the internet, the Netgear setup utility DID see my Linksys Wireless G router so there shouldn't be anything wrong with the card itself. The Linksys wireless G works well with the Orinoco gold card in my wife's Toshiba laptop right out of the box as it is backwards compatible with 802.11b. I'm out of ideas here and am grasping at straws. ANYTHING that anyone might be able to contribute that may help me figure this out, please let me know!! Thanks Dapper Dan

    Mandrake 10.1 and SATA harddrive

My HP 5550 works flawlessly with CUPS under Fedora Core 1 & 2, and Suse 9.1. Maybe another distro might be worth consideration if all else fails...

    Thank you ALL!!!

This may wind up being an exceedingly long post, but I want to relay a story. A friend of mine is a reformed alcoholic. I knew this long before we became friends, but never discussed it with him. One day he brought the subject up, and I asked him how he got off the booze. What he told me was very enlightening. He said he tried for years to quite drinking to no avail. It was easy to fall back into drunkenness when everyone around him kept telling him that he was a victim, and his alcoholism was a disease and it wasn't his fault. He said as long as others reinforced in his mind that he wasn't responsible for his actions, it was easy to just go back on the bottle. He then said it was only when an old friend told him that he WAS responsible for his actions, and that he was, “nothing more than a damn drunk,” that he quit drinking. His friend had shamed him into doing the right thing... I hope you're right danleff. As a Christian I condemn the action, not the person. I have nothing personally against somethingotherthenwindows, I only feel sorrow he chose to steal. Rather than risk not saying anything, I thought it best to try and shame my new friend somethingotherthenwindows into also doing the right thing. It was my intention to show him there are consequences for choosing the wrong course. In some circles I think it is referred to as “tough love”... danleff, I seem to remember he said he was seventeen. As a couple of old horses like us know, The actions you take as a youth often sets the course for the rest of your life. somethingotherthenwindows obviously knows what he did was wrong, otherwise he wouldn't feel shame about it. I hope the guilt he is now feeling will deter him from stealing again, because a life of thievery and dishonesty can only lead to hardship, emptiness and sorrow. I've seen MANY such cases... If he rights this wrong, I for one will welcome him back under his old name, (or new one if he chooses to reveal who he is), as a valued member of Linuxcompatible, and the Linux community in general. Let's hope he chooses wisely, not for our sake, but for his.

However, any reasonably intelligent person like you should have expected that might be a possible reaction from others. You can't very well post on a forum that you stole a video card and expect everyone to praise you for it. Do you honestly believe life is supposed to be easy, and that good things will always happen? Everyone on this forum including me can tell horror stories of personal indignities and wrongs done to them. Life is tough and royally sucks often, don't you know that? The sooner you learn it the better! The question is, what are we gonna do about it? When you come up against one of life's many obstacles you either go under it, around it, through it or over it! You don't sit in the toilet and cry all night! Quote: you wonder why columbine happend??? because people like you are making people like me feel bad. Columbine happened because people ceaselessly want to blame others for their problems whether those others had anything to do with it or not. It all boils down to the irresponsibility of our society. No one is ever to blame for their problems! It's always someone else's fault. We have become a nation of whiners. Quote: maybe i should just go and pay my debt to society for ever.... did u think something like you just saying that would make me go do something bad? probably not. good thing im not a psyco! If you WERE psycho, your conscience wouldn't be bothering you. It is my hope you have somehow found something positive from this experience. I would have: 1. Don't steal, it's not worth it. Better to live poorly in honor than in riches with dishonor. 2. If I do steal, I won't write about it on a forum. 3. If I do steal and write about it on a forum, I won't be surprised if others tell me I've done something wrong. somethingotherthenwindows there IS a solution: Put $150.00 in an envelope, and mail it to the store where you stole the card, with an anonymous note explaining what happened. You'll immediately feel much better about the whole incident, gauranteed!

    Browser complaints!

I'm not sure I can remember a time when Firefox didn't give me this problem. I'm afraid I didn't run 1.0 PR long enough to know if it acted in the same way as I immediately went back to the version from Yast. While running Fedora Core one I ran Firefox without Mozilla installed, but retained ~/.mozilla so that Firefox could load java, flash, and realplayer plugins from there. What you suggest may be worth a try. It usually dies on me when I'm either making a post or going to a new web page. It seems to do it most often when I go to pages containing java or flash. So far, I've been pretty happy with Galeon though.

    Browser complaints!

I updated to 1.0 PR and you're right, the installer works flawlessly and overall it performed well. The only problem was, no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get it to configure RealPlayer to save my life. I hate RealPlayer as much as anyone, but since I don't watch television, I visit Foxnews.com a lot and often want to see the videos there, and RealPlayer is all that works. Speaking of RealPlayer, STAY AWAY FROM RP 10 for LINUX! They are up to there old Windows tricks of highjacking everything on your computer without your apparant knowledge! I installed it, and it highjacked every MP3 on my computer!

SMC 2532W-B on fedora core 2

I must have missed you post of the 24th, sorry. When you go into system-config-network under "hardware," your SMC should be showing up there. Is it? If Kudzu has configured it as you say, it should. Try checking it under eth0, eth1, and wlan. Im going to go re-familiarize myelf with system-config-network so I can help better with this...

Look in /usr/bin/. That's where many of the Linux executables are, or there will be links to them from /usr/bin.

    Mandrake 10.1 and SATA harddrive

LOL! I had the same problem when I installed Mandrake 10 with my HP 5550. It would, without rhyme or reason, spit out paper at the weirdest intervals! This happened on two different installs! This, and other problems I encountered, were enough for me to give Mandrake 10 a pass.

Quote: P.S. danleff and dapper dan. if u think is inapropriate for me to say i stole it, then please delete anything you want! Saying that you stole a video card, is not in itself something to be moderated on this forum. However, since you freely and openly admit that you did steal the card, you are admitting to theft which is dishonest, criminal and worst of all dishonorable. You SHOULD feel bad about it. You'll receive no further help from me.

Hi ReFoRMaT, and if we haven't said so already, welcome! Thanks for the excellent report on your experiments with these distros. I am with you all the way with Suse! Iv'e been using RedHat/Fedora, and I'm really loving Suse 9.1 Professional. It is very intuitive and easy to install. The thing I really like about the Suse install, is it lays it all out there for you to check over and edit. You can change and reconfigure anything at will before committing to the install. I also like the way it handles drives and partitioning. I love being able to format with RieserFS which is not offered with the Fedora install. I haven't had any trouble with installing the NVIDIA 3d "drivers," that worked out pretty easy for me. Unlike Fedora, Suse gives me my favorite DE, IceWM, and my old stand by browser, Galeon. Flash and Java are already configured as well. The only drawback with Suse for me was finding out how to bring up Nautilus, Gedit, and Konqueror as root. I found out that just doing, "su" isn't enough. You have to go: sux -l root or it won't bring it up. I still have Fedora Core 1 on my box, but have gotten to where I'm using Suse 99% of the time!

jarves, Fedora Core 2 automatically detects USB drives. Is this a reader/writer stick? If so, Fedora should automount it when you plug it in. It will get mounted in /mnt, look there. If you are using Gnome or KDE it should present itself right on your desktop.

    silly question

.exe files, or Windows executables, can be run with varying stages of success using Wine. There are specialized versions of it for different jobs and applications. There's regular old Wine that comes with many, if not most modern Linux distros, and has vastly improved over the last two years. There's CrossOver Wine which specializes in Windows Office apps and related Windows programs. Cedega, from Transgaming Technologies, specializes in running Windows games. Win4Lin from Netraverse, allows you to run an entire Windows operating system right from your Linux desktop. Wine can be a lot of fun to play around with, trying to get Windows programs running, and can also be frustrating. Just a few days ago, I got Final Draft, a screenwriting program, working almost perfectly using regular old Wine.
