Excellent instructions blackpage! I had to do this on my brother in law's laptop just a few weeks ago. What you wrote here is exactly what I did to the letter!

Trouble with Canon s330. Prints but is too light.
Dapper Dan replied to Somedude127's topic in Everything Linux
Hi Somedude127 and welcome to Linuxcompatible! The very reason I've not moved over completely to Core 2 is because of problems I've encountered trying to use Open Office, and I must have a stable word processor for a huge writing project I'm working on. OO in Core 1 is rock solid. As far as Photoshop is concerned, it purportedly works reasonably well using Crossover Wine, so you might want to check that out. I've never used Photoshop although I hear it's heads and shoulders above the rest. The Gimp may suit your needs, and it should be right there in your menu. -
Hi iamroot, I'm jealous! A geek buddy of mine just got an I-64 E book laptop and that thing is slick as a button! I really am just completely dumbfounded why Windows owns the consumer OS world when Mac is making such stellar, intuitive, stable and downright fun products. I was so impressed, I've thought about buying one myself! I don't know how fast the processor is, but his seemed to have to noticeable lag. It seemed very speedy to me. What a supremely wonderful piece of computing!

Fedora Core 1 or Mepis RC3. Both have very good hardware detection and set up utilities. What is the card you are trying to configure?

Download: j2sdk-1_4_2_04-nb-3_6-bin-linux.bin with NetBeans from java.sun.com. It is a very large file, but after installation you can delete it and also delete Netbeans which it will also want to install in /opt. It's just easier to install this than the others. 'cd' to the directory where you downloaded it, and as root do: chmod 777 j2sdk-1_4_2_04-nb-3_6-bin-linux.bin then: ./j2sdk-1_4_2_04-nb-3_6-bin-linux.bin The installer will come up. Follow the directions. Let the installer install it to: /opt/j2sdk-1_4_2_04 After installation is complete, we now need to make the symbolic link. Open konsole and become root, then copy and paste this: ln -s /opt/j2sdk1.4.2_04/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so /home/Whiskers/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so ...into konsole and press enter. That *should* create the symlink to make java plugins work with your mozilla browser, which will also make it work with Firefox. It does in Fedora, but we may have to do some tailoring as I've not tried it with Mdk 10. Of course, change what I've underlined above to the actual name of your home directory. Good luck!
-
Real easy Whiskers, find out for me where your Java is installed. Mine is installed in /opt.
-
Whiskers, which symlinks do you need to make? From Java for the java plugin in your browser? I believe the Flash install already makes the links for you but you have to tell it where to put it.

Have you tried logging in as root? Just type in "root" when it asks for user name, then for password, use your root password. Once "in" you can then use the user utiliity in the Mandrake Control center to re-configure your regular user name and password. Is this a fresh install, or do you have a /home partition left over from a previous Linux installation?

Actually I did install mozex once and it does work with Mozilla. I didn't know it would work with Firefox though, thanks! -
I think the problem is you have to change permissions on the file before you can execute it. Here's what I did... Code: [Dapper@Dan Dapper]$ suPassword:# ls ReRealPlayer10GOLD.bin Reed.Media_Release.doc[root@Dan Dapper]# ls RealPlayer10GOLD.binRealPlayer10GOLD.bin[root@Dan Dapper]# chmod 777 RealPlayer10GOLD.bin[root@Dan Dapper]# ./RealPlayer10GOLD.binExtracting files for RealPlayer installation........................ I wish I could help you Beej, but don't have an Audigy to play with. There should be someone here who can help you with this if we can keep this thread live long enough for them to see it...

Ati drivers, no mouse detection in Fedora Core 2
Dapper Dan replied to losmescaleros's topic in Linux Hardware
I know I'm gonna piss off ATI users by saying this, but if you use Linux, NVIDIA is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. Yes, I have one box with Fedora Core 2 running an ATI Mach 64, and it works well, but having used both cards for a while under several different distros, it is my opinion that NVIDIA beats ATI hands down as far as compatibility is concerned. ATI makes smokin' cards, many of which will run circles around a comparable NVIDIA card when both are configured correctly, but NVIDIA is really on the ball with supporting their cards under Linux. In the old days, configuring an NVIDIA card under Linux was a ten day nightmare. It's so easy now, it's almost no fun.. So essentially I'm saying, Get a Linux compatible NVIDIA card, if the ATI presently motivates you to polish your firearms... -
Register default Internet programs, email on web browser
Dapper Dan replied to Whiskers's topic in Everything Linux
I believe Firefox has a way for you to tell it to use a specific email program as does Mozilla. I have the same problem with Evolution. If I click on a link from an email, it defaults to Mozilla, then to konqueror. Anyone know how to make Firefox my browser default when clicking links in Evolution? -
Hi Beej, I understand your frustration. We live in a Windows world, and as Linux users have to know ten times as much, and in many cases, have to work ten times as hard to configure hardware for our OS of choice. By the way, a lot of us here are (relatively) old men, so we certainly can empathize with the forgetfulness part! I'm 47.

There are several scanners listed in the compatibility section that are reported to work perfectly with SANE, however many of them also seem to be getting "long in the tooth." Does anyone have recommendations for a newer model scanner that works well? I prefer a flatbed, but any will do. Thanks.

Mand. V10 Install - USB Logitech KB/Mouse
Dapper Dan replied to bstark73's topic in Everything Linux
I would dig up your old chorded mouse and keyboard if you have them and do the install. After you get Mandrake up and running, you can then try to get the other working. I honestly don't know about your wireless set up's compatability with Mandrake though. Here's a couple of links... http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/130779 http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/01/msg05737.html -
You'd think since I'm in the radio advertising business these things wouldn't escape me.. Thanks!
-
I found this one at a much reduced price. I'm not seeing anywhere where this is a "refurbished" or "slightly used" model. It appears to be new. Is this too good to be true?
-
Jimf43, are you just going to step down a kernel and remain with reiserfs? I don't guess you have the time to retry rc4 using ext3 do you? Just wondering...
-
Would anyone be willing to intall the 2.6.8 kernel on a ext2 or ext3 partition to see if it's just reiserfs? Jimf43, I've only installed Mepis once. Is ext2 and ext3 available with the Mepis installation utility, or do you have to use a formatting and partioning tool like qtparted?
-
Enough with the name calling, and it doesn't matter who started it. Let's call a truce, and begin a constructive discourse. Being a big fan of reiserfs, I personally would be very interested in reading a civil dialog between the two of you. OK?
-
My girl's old hp printer is as slow as cold honey, so I could justify the printer part as well. If I bought one, Would it be as simple as you sending me your tweeked file?

Are you stupid, a troll, or just asking to be flamed? jimf43, I don't think it was trondare's intention to cause dissension. Maybe if he would share with us more information, we could all learn from each others experience(s) when using reiserfs and the 2.6 kernel.

For those of us who prefer Reiserfs, that's very good to know! Thanks Jim.

I'm sorry Linux wasn't to your liking. NEXT!
