    Mandrake 10 - Kernel 2.6 - CMI8738

Just to make sure there's nothing simple wrong, did you check aumix to make sure the volume is turned up, and it's not set on "mute?"

  3. There is a "free" version of Winex3/Cedega, but it comes as source and you have to compile it. Look on their site for more details.

Fedora Core 2, Which Wireless card?

yelgnits. make sure the card you buy is the Orinoco Gold card, and make certain it has 8410 in the beginning as its product number. The card I found above was the lowest price I could find, but you may want to do another "Froogle" on it to see if there's any other place that has it for less. It should plug and play for you upon your recieving it. If not, don't panic, it will be an easy matter to configure it. If you need help with that, let me know. Again, I must stress, the card works wonderfully well for me, using a laptop with either Core 1, and Morphix-Gnome 4.1 with a Linksys 802.11"G" router. Please don't hold me responsible if there are variables in your particular equasion that cause it not to perform as expected.

    mandrake 9.0 install

It's been a while since I used Windows, so I'm going on memory here. Did Windows say anything when you uninstalled that drive? Maybe reinstall it and see if Windows re-recognize it. Windows will asign it a letter,( will it not?), like maybe "E" or something. Then it's just a matter of finding that drive in "My Computer" right clicking and formatting it. Make sure you format the right drive though! Hope this helps.

    Mandrake Install Question...

Hi R3ckl3ss, and welcome! I don't know if what you're wanting to do is possible, but I feel certain someone else here can tell you. Is it just a really slow old machine? I can't think of any other reason the install would be so slow, that you'd want to try and do it another way. I've put Mandrake 8.2, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 10, (along with several other distros), on what I call my "experimental box." It's an old 1998 custom built job with 128 ram, 650 Celeron and a 6 gig hard drive, and all of them installed in what I felt was a reasonable period of time. Of course a lot depends on how many packages you want to install. One good thing about Mandrake is you are a allowed to make a truly minimal install. If the process is just to tedious for you, why not do a smaller install to begin with, and just add packages over time as you need them? URPMI is a great way to install Mandrake packages!

Can he do that without a router?

Fedora Core 2, Which Wireless card?

I know it as a certainty that this Orinoco Gold card works in conjunction with Core 1 and the Linksys wrt54g "Wireless G" router. I had that combination going with my sister-in-law's Dell laptop just 2 weeks ago. I cannot tell you as a certainty the same will be true with Core 2, but my better judgement says it will. You might want to ask a Core 2 user if it has the correct modules for this card included just as a safety.

Koba, I'm already trying to get this "Skype" working with wine. It's not looking good though. In Win4Lin, it installs fine but crashes Windows. With cedega, (gaming wine) I get errors. I don't have Crossover on any of my boxes right now, but I fear the rusults will be similar. I think your best chance is to go ahead and continue trying to get it working under Linux. If I can find the time, I'll try to get it working on my box.

Newbie, Sagem Fast 800 modem, ADSL, won't work!

Richy, have a look at this page. The Netgear ADSL modem/router looks pretty promising. We use a regular Netgear router combined with a seperate ADSL modem at my business and it works very well. Netgear seems to be on the ball with Linux. Just to be safe, I'd stay away from anything USB. Let me be clear: You have ADSL by way of a cat 5 cable? If so, I think you could use just about any network interface card in combination with a router and ADSL modem. Which makes ne think: You say you're already using this Sagem ADSL modem in conjunction with Windows XP and everything is working right? Does the Sagem possibly have a cat5 slot "out" somehere? If so, it would probably work if you ran cat 5 from your modem to a router, and then to your box. Do you know anyone who has a Netgear or Linksys wired, (or wireless) router you could borrow? Many more will work with Linux, it's just I know these two will.

    what linux to use

That's amazing! The first ISOs I ever burned with Nero when I was using Windows was Mandrake 8.2, and it failed! Rather than risk it a second time, I ordered the cd's from Mandrake, which of course worked!

Newbie, Sagem Fast 800 modem, ADSL, won't work!

From the sagem website: -ADSL for everyone -A truly universal solution -All OS supported -The easiest installation and support possible Richy, I'd ask their support about "easiest installation and support possible."

I have this router too, and can tell you that the Orinoco card mentioned above works with it 100%.

Newbie, Sagem Fast 800 modem, ADSL, won't work!

Richy, I'm sorry to say I tried to compile that thing and the more I looked into it the more confusing it was for me. When I finally tried to do a make, it spat out about a zillion errors! I'm afraid it's gonna take someone with way more experience than me to get this thing going for you. The good news is, with Fedora Core 1, you now have a 2.4 kernel from which to build it, rather than trying to make it work with 2.6. From the sheer volume of posts I'm seeing on the Internet about users trying to get this thing operational, it appears to me that the company was somewhat less than truthful in advertising that their modem is such a fast and simple solution for all OSs. This is typical of the many posts I've found... http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/modules.php...p;forum=1&9 And there are many more! I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying I'm smart enough to know, that I'm NOT smart enough to figure it out in a reasonable period of time. Did you buy this new? If so, I'd fire off a request for support from the company and demand they help you. After all, you paid your money, and they say they support this modem!. If they won't help you, then I'd ship it back, and include a nasty letter. It wouldn't have taken them very much time to build a module or driver for this modem that would have been easier to figure out and install, but then we run into this type situation a lot as Linux users. There ARE other ADSL modems on the market that will work right out of the box with Linux. I'm very sorry I couldn't help more..

Newbie, Sagem Fast 800 modem, ADSL, won't work!

Did you go through the process of building it again? Tell you what, I'll try to build it on my system, and tell you what I did...
  17. I'm not real sure how regular old wine works, but Win4lin, Winex3 and Crossover make a "fake" "c" or windows directory, where winddows programs are installed, usually hidden. Likely there won't be much, if anything in there until you install a Windows program. What Window apps are you trying to run? Also, if it's the executable you're looking for, I would think it, or at least a link to it would be installed in /usr/bin.

    Post your latest screenshot!

jimf43 and I thought it might be fun to have a thread here at Linuxcompatible.org where everyone could post a link to their latest screenshot! By the way Jim sent his latest, showing IceWM under Mepis to the Mepis site, and they've posted it! If you would like to post your latest, please do so here! To start things off, here's one I put together last night showing IceWM under Fedora Core 1... http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/352713/mars2.jpg

Fedora Core 2, Which Wireless card?

I use, and am a big believer in the Orinoco gold card. It works with 802.11b, and works with my Linksys wireless "G" router which is backwards compatible. It has good range, steady signal, and honors 128 bit WEP incryption. Mine worked right out of the box with Morphix 4.1. I didn't even have to crack a terminal!

Any plea for Windows to be gone, gets a reply from me! Lets start from the top. Which version of Mandrake 10 do you have? DID you check with md5sum? were the numbers the same? At what speed, and with which software did you burn it?
