    GNOME boot error

Is this after or before GDM? What distro? Apt-get Debian or apt-get rpm?
  2. Most of the cards that work with Linux are in the 802.11b class. "G" is relatively new. I have found the Linksys wireless G router is indeed backward compatible to some "b" cards but not all. I understand the Negear 511 can be made to work under Linux, but it isn't an easy process, especially for a new Linux user. I'm fairly certain the Linksys wireless G card is not yet capable of running under Linux. Tell me about your router. Is it a Linksys wireless G? If so you may want to consider getting an Orinoco Gold Card. I know from experience it will work with "B" only routers and "G"s that are backward compatible.

    FL Studio 4.5.2 on Linux

No go with Crossover either. If there's not a Linux equivalent, then you'll have to run under Windows. Please let us know if you find a Linux equivalent.

    FL Studio 4.5.2 on Linux

I tried this product under winex3/cedega. No go. Hell, I couldn't even get it to work under Win4lin which is highly unusual. I'll try it under Crossover Wine but it's looking pretty grim..

    paths

I'm not real informed on java, but I think you'd have to make a symbolic link from the java executable to /usr/bin. Tell me more. Is there a program or files that open with java, as in: java jarvesfile.xxx or something? If that is the case try this. Make a symlink as root like so: ln -s /opt/j2sdk1.4.2_04/bin/java /usr/bin/java [enter] That's how I'd do it on mine, but your java location and the version may differ. Just change it accordingly. It won't hurt anything if this doen't do what you want.

    SGI 1600SW monitor

Well then, that really sux. You'd think that if both were listed and you chose them you'd get a screen. Hmmm. Is it giving you a particular error? if so what is it? If not, tell us exactly what does, (or does not) happen when you boot up.
  7. danleff is very familiar with nforce problems, he should be able to get you pointed in the right direction. Sorry I couldn't help...

Did you run XFdrake? Is your monitor and card not listed? Did you try the different versions of Xfree86?

    StarCraft under wine problem

You cannot run Starcraft unless you are in Xwindows. If Winex3 is not an option for you, try googling: Starcraft wine full screen And see what comes up.

Koba, I've been playing around with blender. I don't really understand what it is, but it looks like a neat program! If you want to run a file with blender, you can symbolically link it to you /usr/bin directory, and that should work. I untarred it, and placed blender-2.33a-linux-glibc2.2.5-i386 into /usr/share. I then sybolically linked it by doing as root: ln -s /usr/share/blender-2.33a-linux-glibc2.2.5-i386/blender /usr/bin/blender [enter] I now can call it by just doing: blender [enter] from a console, and it opens. You should now be able to open your files by just preceding it with blender like: blender x.jpg [enter] I hope this helps...

unable to mount usb drives in linux

Is this like one of those picture imaging programs? If so, I just don't know if there is an equivalant Linux program that gives any support for it. Are your pictures on a USB storage device or are you trying to download them to your box directly from a camera via a USB cable? If camera via USB cable, I wouldn't know how to do that. If taking out a USB storage device and plugging it into your computer, we can probably make that happen. What distro are you using?

unable to mount usb drives in linux

Using gedit as root, check your /etc/fstab and tell me if you have a line that looks like this toward the bottom... Code: /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash auto noauto, owner, kudzu 0 0 It may be just a matter of mounting it. As root go: mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash [enter] Then: mount /mnt/flash [enter] Also try leaving your USB device plugged in before booting/rebooting. My guess is that it will be mounted at startup and you'll then have access to it without having to mount it yourself.

    mandrake 10 problems

jarves you need to really get familiar with everything in the Mandrake Control Center. It will be in your menu. There are many tools in there for configuring your system including mousedrake which will help you configure your mouse just like at install. The more familiar you are with the Mandrake Control Center, the more you will have control over your box. If you cannot use your mouse at all, power off your box, unplug it, then boot back up. Mandrake should see the mouse is gone. Then power down, reinstall the mouse and boot. Mandrake should then find and help you configure it. Let me know if this doesn't work. Good Luck!

Yes, I was correct. Without any programing on my part, Fedora 2 found and mounted my USB stick that I just happened to have plugged in when I did the install!

    StarCraft under wine problem

You can use the "free" version of Winex, but it has to me compiled. Check with Transgaming.com for more info. I just checked there, and they're trying to get a whole new web look up so it's pretty chaotic over there right now. You might want to wait a day or so..

    Using the terminal

OK, I see. To open .jpg's or other picture files you can use the gimp. Just go.. gimp x.jpg [enter] and it will open it. There are other viewers as well. When I was using Mandrake, I especially liked electric eyes for quick viewing of picture files. I don't think we have that. Gnome viewer is pretty good too..

    Using the terminal

Koba, I think this is a very good page to help with commands. I never did commands in a terminal until I started using Linux 2 years ago. It takes time but eventually it becomes second nature. If you need to open, read or edit files from the command line, try vi. for instance, as root go.. vi /etc/fstab [enter] to close vi go press escape, then go: : x [enter] without a space between : and x. Be careful not to save a file if you accidently edit it wrongly. [Edited by Dapper Dan on 2004-06-22 09:34:56]

Fresh install. But let me have a second look at it to make sure I didn't just dream it had built in USB file device support. I'll get back soon..
