Tell us more about that video card. It's an Intel? On board or added hardware?

iamroot, installing and using apt is very easy and will make your life with Linux far simpler than it is now! If you want to try it, here's how... Download this and this. Then, install them: rpm -ivh apt-0.5.15cnc6-1.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.15cnc6-1.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm [enter] Once installed, and with an Internet connection present, do: apt-get update [enter] Do the above update step once more. Then go: apt-get install synaptic [enter] After it has downloaded and installed, type (still as root): synaptic [enter] You now have the Synaptic front end for apt. In the search box in the upper right hand corner, type: xine [enter] Then, install it via the intuitive interface. Apt solves all dependency issues for you! That's it!
-
Open a terminal and as root run XFdrake [enter] Go with the lowest possible resolution to begin with, and change between the 2 different versions of XFree86. Also, and most importantly, find the exact model of your monitor on the back of it, and match it exactly in the list of monitors provided. What video card are you running?
-
If you are using apt with the Fresh RPMS repositories as I have under Core 2, it should install without incident. Xine under Core 2 plays my new encrypted Northern Exposure DVD without a hitch. I had no problems whatsoever installing Xine via apt. Are you using the Fresh RPMS repositories or trying to install from the regular .RPMs?

I already had HL installed under Core 1. When I installed Core 2 on another partition on my HD, I pointed it to my existing /home directory as the one it should use which already had HL installed at ~/.transgaming/c_drive/SIERRA/Half-Life. Winex3 installed without a problem under Core 2. Under Core 2, HL ran extremely stilted. The exact same way it runs under the 2.4 kernel without 3-D and opengl supported drivers, or running the "nv" drivers. Does this mean there is either presently or very soon to be 3-D and opengl support for X.org and 2.6?
-
Wish I could help. The Nvidia cards seem to work well with the new kernel, but we're having problems with 3-D and opengl support with X.org. Is your distro using X.org instead of XFree86? I'm sure we'll all get everything sorted out shortly.

Here's a few 56k modems I found that are Linux compatible, and all are under $20.00 and one is under $10.00. http://www.vertigoonline.com/Merchant2/m...gory_Code=Best_ http://store.yahoo.com/sonicmarts/ce56kvexseda.html http://www.aaronix.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/213 If I were to choose between these three, I would go with the CenDyne since it is external. I hope this helps..

I've been trying for a week to install Suse 9.0 via FTP and I'm getting literally nowhere! You have to load the correct modules for you NIC before you can start the installation via FTP. I've been through FOUR completely normal, working and common NIC's and I keep getting the error: No network device found! Please load a network module first! I've used every SMC driver for my SMC card, the tulip driver for my Linksys card, Every D-link driver that will load, every Realtec driver for my Realtec and I still get this same error! ;( Hopefully I'm just overlooking something because these are pretty dang common NIC's and modules do load for them! Any Suse person out there have any experience with this who can help me? Thanks Dapper

I'm not sure if I can find my Mepis, but I'll try another Live cd, maybe Morphix and see if it see's the NIC. This has me baffled..

It's never a problem to help out a fellow Linux user. If you need me, just whistle..

About the FTP uploader, there are two that I think stand out. KBear and Krusader. Both allow drag and drop from one machine to another. I've used both, and believe Krusader to be far superior to KBear, but of course everyone will have their opinion I just assumed that the CD plugin was a stand alone. I think you are right in that it does come standard with XMMS. It does sound like you've had a good day. Just remember: You learn 10 times more on a bad day with Linux than on a good day with Windows!

Synaptic should list the plugin you installed. Uninstall it with Synaptic, then click "refresh" in the upper left. Then look back for the CD plugin, and it should list the earlier version number, then install it.
-
Are you using OSS or Alsa? Try enableing the OSS plugin.
-
Koba, now that you have an Internet connection, I would go with apt-get rpm using the Fresh RPMS repositories and install everything related to XMMS. It's strange that you don't have those options! My version of the plugin is 1.2.10 which has those options. Did you pick up the very latest version of XMMS somewhere?
-
Koba, this is so strange! I just had this exact same thing happen to me yesterday morning on a DJ box I built for a friend! LOL! The fix I found was to go into options/preferences-configure CD Audio Playerand under "Play Mode" switch it from "Analog" to "Digital audio extraction." Below that under "Volume Control" I also changed from "OSS Mixer" to "No Mixer." Try that and see what you get. By the way, just in case you don't know, with XMMS you have to kill then restart it for any changes to take effect. Let me know how you come out. EDIT: Also, since you said "track1" it makes me bekieve you were trying to play songs without being online. Otherwise, CDDB would kick in naming the song. If you play music without Internet connection present, (which of course is perfectly fine), go under "CD Info" and disabble CDDB. Otherwise, XMMS will hang looking for CDDB which it won't be able to reach.

Thanks danleff. This is a box I just got from an old friend and it still has Windows 98. The Linksys,SMC and Realtec all work under Windows, and the D-link begs for drivers. All of these NICs have at one time or another, given me great service under Linux with other distros. I'll change slots anyway just to make sure. Yes, that message comes up saying the modules were loaded successfully. Every time though, it asks for me to enter the cards parameters, but I don't know what those are so I leave it blank. The modules still load correctly though..

As you can see from this post, your modem is really difficult. You can continue trying to get it to work or make life much easier by buying an external 56k modem that is known to work. The Actiontec V92 serial modem works flawlessly under Linux and will deliver much better performance than most internal pci modems.

Thanks! That's very good information to know!

I was able to get Half-Life to run, with the 2.6 kernel, but it runs like it used to when using the nv drivers rather than the "nvidia" drivers under the 2.4 kernel. Thus, I think the problem with games is not with the 2.6 kernel, but rather with the stock X.org "drivers."

Mplayer does not work for me in FC2 either. It flashes through and won't read correctly, however Xine works perfectly. You can install Xine that works via apt-get rpm using the Fresh RPMS repositories. Make sure you point it to /dev/cdrom, or /dev/dvd, whichever, rather than /mnt/cdrom etc. Are you using apt?
-
iamroot, is it a problem just with Fedora 2, or are the present nvidia drivers not compatible with X.org?
-
FEDORA and Dell c800 GUI display "not"
Dapper Dan replied to spanish_diamond's topic in Linux Hardware
My G-Force 256 works very nicely with Fedora Core 1 and 2. Core one uses XFree86 and Core two uses X.org. With XFree86, you could go to Nvidia, download the latest modules and change your /etc/X11/XF86Config to reflect "nvidia" rather than the standard "nv" drivers. I am totally ignorant of X.org and what/how/if it is similarly needed to update modules for Xorg, or what. If anyone knows, or can sort this out, please post. -
I just ran into this same problem with Fedora Core 1. The Gnome-CD just will not work for me no matter what I try. The solution I found was to disable Gnome-CD from starting everytime you put a music cd in, and use XMMS configured with the CD audio player plugin, [libcdaudio.so] If you have apt-get installed, use the Fresh rpms repositories for RH 9 and you can install it from there. XMMS is a better player anyway..

I sure hate to hear that. It's a real bummmer when you have to decide to give something up after working so hard, believe me I know. I hope you have better luck with the access point.

It probably has to do with dvd patents and copyrights. What distro do you use? I can't remember..
