I'm not sure about what Red Hat offers but essentially they were talking about a live cd. This is a complete Linux OS that runs entirely from the cd and will have no effect on your hard drive OS. There are many live CD distros out there, most of which are Debian based. Failing finding the Red Hat live cd you are referring to, I can recommend others I've tried. Here are my current preferences in order: 1. BeatrIX 2. Mepis 3. Morphix 4. Slax 5. PCLinuxOS 6. Kanotix 7. Damn Small 8. Knoppix 9. Ubuntu 10 Gnoppix For more information about any of these, do a search at Distrowatch.com.

Hi everyone, I've found a Bios update at the Intel site which is a perfect match for my Dimension 4550, and I'm tempted to update it in hopes that it also provides boot-to-usb capability. The operation looks pretty straight forward. You download an executable to floppy, then reboot, and the update is supposed to install itself. Honestly though, I'm feeling a bit of anxiety over this because, once you hose your Bios, you're exceptionally hosed!! Anyone here ever done this before? If so, are there any tips or precautions I should be aware of? Thanks!

Sorry it took a while to get back with you on this emccornack, but I've been trying to compile the 2.6.10 kernel for Slackware 10.1 and have had similar sound problems. I thought if I held off, I might be able to help you better having had to re-compile my kernel to include the ensonique modules so alsaconf could configure my card. OK.... Have a look at this... http://www.linuxcompatible.org/thread28166-1.html Also, would you post the output of your: /sbin/lsmod ?

I guess this is as good a place to tell y'all as any. I've become a member of the Church of the Subgenius. My search has stopped with Slackware. It fits me like a glove...

Any Linux drivers for US Robotics 56k winmodem Model 2884B, AD1807JS chipset?
Dapper Dan replied to pr-man's topic in Linux Hardware
I'm afraid not. Have a look at the first entry of this Google I did on your modem. You'll see yours a little ways down the page... -
Backup copy of Shogo:MAD installed but keeps asking for mounting of shogo CD Hel
Dapper Dan replied to pr-man's topic in Linux Games
Your machine may not be automounting the CD. Before running, put the cd in the beverage tray, open a terminal, become root and go: mount /mnt/cdrom [enter] That will get the CD going so the program can find it. When done, go: umount /mnt/cdrom [enter] That's Umount amd not UNmount. -
No it doesn't. SuSE is good about protecting your Windows partitions, but I still wouldn't take the chance. Back up all files before attempting any partitioning and do a thorough defrag of Windows before starting.
-
Open a terminal and become root by typing: su And pressing [enter] Then type: alsaconf [enter] Follow the on screen instructions. If you don't have alsaconf, see this page for an easy "how to" to get alsa sound on your Mandrake box. If after running alsaconf, it doesn't see your soundcard, post back and we'll have to formulate a "Plan B."

Check in Yast2 - install hardware and make sure it's installed. If so, it should come right up when you type from the command line: emacs And press enter. If it IS installed and not coming up, then there should be an error message you could post.

Just installed Xandros Desktop 3.0 Deluxe. Where can I download better GF2 Go dr
Dapper Dan replied to pr-man's topic in Linux Hardware
Do they have nvidia kernels in their repositories? I think danleff is familiar with Xandros, maybe he'll know about how to install the nvidia drivers... -

First, look in your menu and see if you have "synaptic," which is a front end for apt-get. If it's not there, it's simple to install. Oen a terminal and become root: su [enter] It will ask for password. Type it in and press enter. Then: apt-get update [enter] Let it do it's thing, then do the above step a second time. Then do: apt-get install synaptic [enter] After synaptic installs, just type: synaptic [enter] And it should come right up. The "GUI" is very intuitive and easy to follow. Do a search on nvidia and the correct nvidia kernel should come up. -

Hi again pr-man, I believe Xandros is Debian based is it not? Then it's a cinch. You can download the correct drivers using apt-get. Does Xandros have the synaptic front end for apt-get? If so, just do a search for "nvidia" and the correct kernel should come up for you to install. -

My Linksys router has a Wireless Network Name(SSID) and a "passphrase" from which to generate the WEP key. What is the make of your router? Can you enable 10 or 26 HEX?
-
What about that password? Where does it go? Are you using 64 or 128 WEP?
-
I also have a Toshiba laptop with an Orinoco Gold PCMCIA and it works perfectly with either a Linksys wireless "b" or wireless "g" router. What type of router are you using? Is it a "g" or a "b?" Where do you put in this password? If you are using 128 WEP encryption have you configured your router for such? In wlcardconfig did you enter the WEP key your router gives? Have you tried getting your router to work without encryption? By the way, tell your friend he really should be using WEP encryption, otherwise he's wide open to be exploited!

Import addressbook from Evolution to Thunderbird
Dapper Dan posted a topic in Linux Customization & Tweaking
Since I can't get Evolution working in Slackware, I decided to give Thunderbird another go. The main problem I've had with any mail program is importing my addressbook from Evolution. Thanks to Todd Warner and our friends at Mepis, this neat script gets the job done! -

I like it a lot, especially with the addition of "Kontact," but I sure wish I had my Evolution back...

I think Evolution is the best of all I've tried.

p-r man stopped by from next door at NT Compatible. I had to stop over there a few weeks ago and ask, (what I'm sure they thought) were some really dumb Windows questions. Over there I'm still a Moderator! LOL!

In the live cd department, I'd like to throw in Slax, PCLinuxOS and my new favourite, BeatrIX. The new Morphix Lite GUI is pretty smokin' too with XFCE.
-
I agree with iamroot. Apt-get RPM for Fedora is the only way to install packages as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't use Fedora without it.

No problem. Just run and configure Evolution answering the questions about your mail address and account and add your hotmail account.
