Dapper Dan replied to thefrog's topic in Linux Hardware
It works ok in Fedora Core 1 on a Dell laptop. -
If you can do the Debian install, and get it up and running the first time through I will kneel before you and worship you as a Guru.

Setting up Motorola SB4200 Modem(Broadband)(External)(USB)
Dapper Dan replied to squid69's topic in Linux Hardware
So you had it working once? Then it should work again. Are you duel booting with Windows? Is there a reset button on the modem? It might be a small hole you have to stick a pin in to do it. If so, try resetting it before booting. Other than this, I'm afraid I don't know much at this point since I'm totally unfamiliar with SuSe's network setup utility. -
Not sure about mouse cursers but you can change menu items and icons with the KDE menu editor. Go to: KDE--->Preferences--->menu editor

Will we still be able to filter where we can see just new posts etc.?

I don't think you can get rid of either of those with rpm -e. I believe you'll have to do it via urpmi. I'll have a look on my Mandrake box, find out, and get back with you on this, unless someone else reading this thread can tell us how before I get back to you. In the meantime, if you have any rpms that you installed, and you don't mind un-installing them until you can get enough space to maneuver, I'd be doing that.

I'm fairly certain there is. Hold on and I'll do a quick Google... http://linux.oldcrank.com/tips/mp3ogg/ There are many more out there, but this looks to be the easiest way...

Thanks for posting how you solved the problem. So many don't respond once they resolve an issue which denies the rest of the Linux community valuable information that would only take a few minutes to post.

I would be willing to bet that the problem is that your / partitions is really stuffed, and you must remove even more from it to get things going again. I have had this problem on my 6 gig box more than once. I would start uninstalling packages using either rpm -e for ones you've installed yourself, or uninstall packages with urpmi. You may have to do some drastic slashing before things get freed up again. CAUTION: do not rm folders of apps, otherwise rpm -e will not know how or where to delete those particular packages. Only use rm as a last resort. What DE are you using? Gnome? KDE? a quick fix might be to uninstall Gnome and/or KDE and just use IceWM. That should free up a lot of space. Then you can rebuild. Another option may be to do a complete re-install, only this time, give even more space to / and take it away from /home. That way, if your /home partition gets too full and you run into this same problem, you can transfer some of your home files to cd or a reader/writer stick and be back in action. Hope this helps you.

How big is your hard drive? Your disk may not be full, but that particular partition may be. Did you create a /home partition? Or just a / partition? How are you deleting files from it? Can you get a prompt? Have you been downloading files or have you run an update with yum/apt/red-carpet recently? Sometimes you have to eliminate more than just a few files before it will be alright again. If you can't get to a prompt to check and/or delete info off of that partition you may have use a rescue or a live cd rescue. 9.1 comes with rescue on cd 1. Just put the first install disk in, and follow the on screen instructions to go into rescue mode. I believe, like with RedHat, you can mount you Hard Drive files by going: mount /mnt/sysimage There should be instructions along the way on how to do it though. I haven't rescued in Mdk for a while so I'm a little fuzzy on how Mdk does it. Are you by chance dual booting with Windows? If you can get a copy of Partition Magic going, you can check how full your Linux partitions are with that.

Are you using Xmms? The default player for RH 9 is actually Xmms, but there are others. When I used RH 9, I got the same error. All I did was download and install the Xmms-mp3 plugin and everything worked normally. The reason the Linux distros are backing off of mp3 support on their players has to do with, (as always) patents and copyrights. You may want to consider using .ogg in the future which is the open source equivalent of mp3. To my very trained ears, ogg sounds a little better than mp3 when sampled at similar rates.

Then I'm out of ideas. Sorry I couldn't help more...

This question is mainly for danleff since he has a lot of experience in this area, but I welcome any advice the rest of you may want to give. I have a 120 gig HD, and the first half of it is being used by Fedora Core one. I've seen enough of Mandrake 10 to want to add it to the second half of my HD which is presently empty. How do I do this without Mandrake overwriting my Fedora partitions? I would like to add Mandrake 10 yet when I boot to it, have it access my existing /home partition rather than it using a new one. I've never even attempted any of this before so please talk as though I am "special." Thanks!

Adding a distro beside an existing distro
Dapper Dan replied to Dapper Dan's topic in Everything Linux
SoulNothing thanks for those links! Maillion, the only reason I'm checking out Mdk 10 so thoroughly is because I have two boxes at work running Mdk 9 that I would like to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel. I thought about going with Fedora until Mdk 10 came out, so now I might go that route since an upgrade would be preferable to a complete re-install. I think you are in great hands with Debian. If you like it and it suits your needs, I wouldn't change over to Mandrake or Fedora. You are so right about Mdk 9.1 and 9.2 sucking as compared to 9.0. That was my experience as well! So far though, Mdk 10 appears to me to be extremely promising! -
Adding a distro beside an existing distro
Dapper Dan replied to Dapper Dan's topic in Everything Linux
The only reason I prefer Grub over Lilo is because of problems I formerly encountered with Lilo overwriting the MBR when I was dual booting between Mdk and Windows, and it giving me a black screen with lililililililililili...etc. I wanna tell you, that would strike fear into the heart of the most resilient Noob. ;( Since I no longer have Windows partitions, I'm not opposed to using Lilo from Mandrake. Besides, Mdk 10 comes with a nifty utility to switch from Lilo to Grub and back if one so desires. So if I install Mdk 10, and create a / and a /home partition, then edit the Mdk fstab to look to my /home directory which is already there under Fedora, couldn't I also tell Mandrake to install Lilo on the existing /boot partition? Would it automatically pick up and list my Fedora for a boot choice, or will I have to edit Lilo to do that? Also, if I can edit fstab to tell Mandrake where to look for /home, can I also edit fstab to tell Mandrake to use my existing swap partition if I decide to mount it? Am I clear on any of this or jusr rambling?? :x -
Quote: Is there an easy way of running my current (windows) versions without having to do any downloading? Some people have mentioned wine and winex, do these come as part of the OS, or do they have to be downloaded? Thanks for the help You will far better off running it from the Linux port than going through Winex3 on this game. Winex3 should only be used on Windows games that there is no Linux port for. I read somewhere that you can import your profiles and saved games from an existing Windows version of Unreal to your new Linux version. It shouldn't be to difficult to do.

Need help on setting up wireless usb adapter on Fedora
Dapper Dan replied to supasirik's topic in Linux Networking
I have no experience with usb adapters with Linux. Well..actually some, but all bad, but you might try this. After booting up, try disconnecting the usb cable from your computer, wait a few seconds, reconnect it, and see if i will then find and make a connection. This works when my Orinoco gold card isn't connected on our laptop. It might be worth a try. Sorry I couldn't help more.. -
I don't know. Cygwin is too confusing for me..
-
What type connection are you using? Are you running from a cat5 cable directly from the modem into your computer? Sometimes DSL ISPs, and especially Cable providers are set up to exclude other computers from using the same connection unless run through a router. They do this by having the modem look for a specific address on a specific box. When you boot to Linux, your modem may be interpreting it as a different computer and won't allow the connection. Most modems have a reset button somewhere on them. Try that and see if it will reset itself to recognize your Linux OS.
-
I may be wrong, but I can't see how it would be possible. When you boot your computer, it will be controlled by either one OS or the other. I don't believe it is possible to run both operating systems on the same machine simultaneously. In my view running a Suse server on a different box and having it act as a firewall would be a more practical solution. If I'm completely wrong about this, I would love to hear anyone explain how it could be done the way you are asking though..

What ram do you have on this box? How much of a swap space did you allow?

Quote: No why? Because if you did, it could have been related to a temperature problem associated with a faulty fan. Other noises can be indicative of hard drive problems which can, in some instances, cause the problem you mention.
