Have you been hearing any strange noises emanating from within your box?

Hi manishthatte. No insult intended by my remark, but if you just want to point and click your way through an OS, then I think you're just setting yourself up for a lot of frustration by checking out Linux. It isn't for everyone, especially users who don't have the time to really investigate or understand it. Like many here, I use Linux because I'm able to make it work for me in my businesses in a way that Windows will never be able to. There is also the "hobbyist" factor with Linux that keeps one attracted to using it. It won't be nearly as easy to use as XP. The swap off however, for the difficulty of learning Linux, is freedom. Again, I'm not trying to be snide or condescending, I just thought I'd try to save you an awful lot of difficulty that you may not be prepared to undergo. If on the other hand, you become as intrigued with Linux as we are, then please let us know. Most everyone here, including me, will be more than happy to assist you.

It's a great feeling isn't it, figuring out how to make it all work in Linux? Congratulations!

Quote: Hi guys I'm trying out Linux for the first time, using Knoppix and/ or Sun Java Desktop (both run from CD), and I was wondering can I install any of the Unreal series without actually installing Linux, and if so, how do I do it? Unreal is included on the Morphix-Gamers cd, which runs just like Knoppix. I've not tried it but you may want to check it out here...

As it was so eloquently put in the epic motion picture, "The Right Stuff".. "No bucks, no Buck Rogers.."

If you're wanting to just play around with it right now, I would check out the live cd distros. That is, a complete Linux operating system that runs from the cd. Your old machine may not have enough ram to run them though. If you have a newer machine with a reasonable amount of ram, try them out. http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=cd

redhat9 installation terminated abnormally

Possibly could be corrupted are incomplete data on the install cd. Did you burn it from an ISO? -
Look around on the Morphix site. I'm sure there must be a list of the games on that cd somewhere. While you have the Morphix Gamers cd in, the games and the operating system are both running from the cd. As far as your other games are concerned, check out Transgaming.com and see if any of them are supported. If so, then you could run it via Winex3 on your regular distro which is pretty easy to do.

What distro are you using and what version of Mozilla? That will determine how it must be installed.

Since I'm a member of Mandrake Club, I get to download the Mdk 10 ISO's free. I downloaded from a New York mirror, a Texas mirror and a North Carolina mirror simultaneously, and still got a download average of between 110 and 130 kb on each!
-
I recommend Mandrake without Gnome or KDE. Try it with IceWM, a a smaller and faster DE with far less bloat. Mdk seems to be more reasonable about how little it allows you to install than some of the other disros. I just did a bare minimum install of Mdk 10 on my old pentium 2, 6 gig, 64 mb box as a work station and so far, everything seems to be running perfectly.
-
You should check out Morphix's gamers live cd. Just set you bios to boot cd, drop the cd in the beverage tray and hang on! There a zillion games for you to play!
-
Funny you should post this as I just burned the ISOs this morning and am testing it right now. So far, 10 found and configured all my stuff, which Mdk 9.1 nor 9.2 would. The interface is very clean and intuitive, and the install was a snap. Unlike the trouble I'm having with the 2.6 kernel with Fedora, mouse movement is smooth and predictable. It's way to early to tell, but so far I'm... well, downright exited! I loved Mdk 9.0 and detested 9.1 and 9.2. It is my fervent hope that 10.0 is as rock solid as 9.0., but it'll take a little more time to tell.
-
Which distro are you thinking of using? If you haven't decided, I reccommend either Fedora Core 1 or Mandrake 9.0. Which ever distro you decide to use should find that empty space and install there. It may take more than one time to get it right. Just be patient, double check all your choices, and above all, BACK UP YOUR XP DATA BEFORE STARTING!

I don't know about whether or not you modem will work but you can access kppp by simply typing it in a terminal: As root: kppp [enter] You must then configure it. Check out this link for how to install NVIDIA drivers. I think you will have to change permissions on it too. "cd" to the directory where it is, then as root do: chmod 777 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.mun [enter]

I've never fooled with this, but I think you might be able to make some corrections with hdparm. Don't take my word for it though, better get more information frome someone who knows more about it, as I know practically nothing..

After doing a little Googleing, I couldn't find anything positive in the way of your sound working with Linux. I did see one post over at LinuxQuestions.org where someone named 2Gnu seemed to report he didn't have any luck either. Sorry I couldn't help more..

You can view those screenshots by right clicking on the link, choose "copy link location" and pasting it in your browser's address window.. Nice screens by the way Neus!

cd to the directory where it is downloaded, and as root go: chmod 777 j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin [enter] That's in case it's permissions are set in such a way that it won't run. Then go: ./j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin or sh j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin [enter] After installation, follow the steps on how to link to Mozilla from above. sdk-1_4_2-nb-3_5_1-bin-linux.bin will do the same thing and is much easier to install.

FEDORA and Dell c800 GUI display "not"
Dapper Dan replied to spanish_diamond's topic in Linux Hardware
Looks like you got a good variety of default resolutions there glenthorne. It should have found one that would work for it. Hmm... ;( -
danleff, I've been playing around with the 2.6 kernel tonight as well. It installed easily enough, but the major problem here is NO SOUND with my extremely common Soundblaster Live. My Logitech usb laser mouse movement was on acid, and the wheel doesn't work. Also, I had to revert to the "nv" drivers to get a screen. It is fast though, but not so fast that it's worth my suffering through the other irritations. As these problems get resolved, I will learn, and from time to time go back to it and try to tweak it. My first impression though is, 2.6 is not ready yet for prime time, but looks very promising!

Quote: Go with Core 1! I got it working with kernel 2.6.0 and kde 3.2.1. Hoooahh!! danleff how is it with 2.6? I may want to upgrade mine if you give me an "all clear."

Fedora Core 1 and Soundmax Integrated Audio..
Dapper Dan replied to haggard's topic in Linux Hardware
By the way, did you by chance try to install asla-libs & alsa- utils or is this the first time you've seen anything about alsa is with these two error messages? -
Fedora Core 1 and Soundmax Integrated Audio..
Dapper Dan replied to haggard's topic in Linux Hardware
It will run as root? Then it should be a matter of fixing permissions. I would first check /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES and see about the permissions. As root go: nautilus --no-desktop [enter] And find /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES. Check the permissions on SOURCES and see if it's root/root 755. If not, make is so, then try as regular user again. -
I thought y'all might get a kick out of seeing my latest "spray" (or wall graffiti) I've been using while playing the almost exclusively Windows cliented online game, Team Fortress... http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/352713/dustbowl0002.jpg
