The easiest to install is Gtk-Gnutella.

Very nice Admiral! I see you use Opera. Is it in the Gentoo portage tree, or did you install it from their tarball?

My advice: Don't use RH 9, use Fedora instead. Install everything. It will make life as a new Linux user much more enjoyable when trying to install things later. Once you get the hang of things, you can start deleteing the progs and apps you don't use or need. Make sure you mount /home on it's own partition. Be prepared to do more than one install. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right. Be prepared to run into difficulty with some hardware issues. You might get lucky and not have any, but it isn't likely you won't have some. Google is your best friend! If you have a problem, google it. There is almost always someone with the same problem you are having, and solutions will be avaiable. As a new Linux user, I would stay away from Mdk 9.1, 9.2 and 10. If using RH 9 or Fedora, make sure to install apt-get rpm! It will make the difference between Linux heaven and dependancy hell!

jimf43, If Fedora Core 1 is buggy, that has not been my experience at all. In fact, I've been so impressed with it's stability, features and speed, that I'm actually contemplating an upgrade to two of my radio station machines to it from Mdk 9. I ran RH 9 for quite a while, and there were unresolvable issues with it that were very annoying. I could never run Nautilus as user. I would get anywhere from 2 to 10 CORBA errors when trying to run it. I tried every proposed solution I googled and none of them worked. There was also a similar issue when trying to run KDE apps, with the DCOP server error, and you couldn't run Konqueror as root from user login. Both problems occurred regardless of DE used. Then there were these horrible fonts which abounded in many of the apps. Thankfully, all these problems vanished when I upgraded to Fedora. I've been as impressed with it as I was when Mdk 9 came out. Yes it is still early, and I may run into similar problems as I go, but so far, Fedora has been a real solid breath of fresh air compared to RH 9. Philipp, please continue to post the Fedora updates. The added Gentoo and Mandrake updates should certainly be a welcome addition for those who use those distros. For those of us who don't, it should be a fairly simple matter to just disregard them.

What's a good network card for Mandrake 9.2
Dapper Dan replied to mrobins3's topic in Linux Networking
Check and make sure the cat5 cable is not running parallel to any electrical wires. This can cause it not to work for sure. If you find that your wire is close to an electric cord, get it as far away from it as possible. This could very likely be the cause of your problem, as I've run into nics not working in two locations because of this. When I moved the cat5 cable away from the electrical wires, everything began working. If this doesn't fix it, you may want to consider going wireless. -
Quote: but for debian is there a gui or is it pure text base? i mean i already got debian and if the version you recommend is like debian then why not stick with debian If you can install Debian, then keep it. I tried 5 times to install Debian and never could get it right. These Live cds based on Knoppix is a great way to get Debian installed on your system without all the problems associated with a text install.

SoulNothing, I just downloaded a new Knoppix based live CD called "Kanotix" and I'm typing from it now. The iso file is 698 MB. This distro impresses me greatly upon first look. Like Knoppix, it automatically mounts your hd partitions making it an easy rescue tool for an installed distro, and it comes with a stack of very usable programs and apps. Plus it's Debian! It comes standard with k3b, Krusader, FireFox, Gaim, Partition Image, QTParted, OO 1.1.0, alsaplayer, Audacity, XMMS, alsaconf, Three, (countem') THREE Dos emulators, and many, many others too numerous to list here. If you can, it may be worth checking out, and a good way to get Debian on your box!

If you have 1 gig of ram, I would think any swap partition would be a waste of space. I have 512 ram which runs noticably faster when my swap partition is disabled. Heck, I wouldn't even install a swap were it not for this one game I play that requires a swap, otherwise it won't install.

LOL! That took me a while to figure out too Mel! The easiest way is to find where someone has done something interesting and click on the edit button which will show how they did it. You can use "quote" which will make text in a white box. Before the text put

If you want Debian, you could also try Mepis. I understand it's pretty new user friendly.
-
I don't think so Mel, at least I've never known that to be the case.
-
SoulNothing did you already try Fedora? If not, that's what I'm using and really like it. Besides, it will install on some machines I have when others won't.

Found these... http://lists.debian.org/debian-multimedia/2003/debian-multimedia-200311/msg00010.html http://mailman.linuxtag.org/pipermail/debian-knoppix/2003-June/003323.html http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6535&highlight= http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/42/2003/12/4/129160

Once you install Knoppix, you will in essence, have Debian, which *should* have the packages you need installed via apt-get. emu10k1.o should also be available as you will have access to the Debian apt repositories. Doing a quick apt-get on my wife's laptop, I find listed: alsa-base 1.0.2c-3

In some cases, yes. I would be helpful to be able to rule it out as the source of the problem.

Mel, I started using Netscape back when I was using Windows. I refused to use IE no matter how difficult Microsoft tried to make it on you if you didn't. The more difficult it was to continue using Netscape, the more determined I was to use it! In retrospect, I consider this to be the first shot in my eventual revolt against Microsoft. I think a lot of Linux users get started this way. I haven't checked out Netscape in a while, thanks!

Fedora Core 1 and Soundmax Integrated Audio..
Dapper Dan replied to haggard's topic in Linux Hardware
motorbelly, there should be Mandrake versions of those rpms. They may be included with your Mdk cds. Go into the Mandrake Control Center to install packages, and type in alsa in the search window and see what happens.. -
What type of router are they using to get the connection to you?
-
I tried upgrading from RH9 to Fedora, from the Fedora disks and ran into a host of problems afterward. I then decided to do a completely new Fedora install after saving my files, and everything now works almost perfectly, and at much faster speeds.

Nvidia is good with Linux.

under Fedora Linux Core 1 ,I can not connect to the internet
Dapper Dan replied to yyyy38's topic in Linux Networking
Are you connecting up your box with a cat5 cable directly from the modem, or are you going through a router? It directly from a modem, what is the make and model. If a router, whate make and model? When your box is booting does it go: eth0..................................[ok] Is there a light on the back of your NIC card after booting up? Don't worry, you'll get something working. These things take time to sort out. -
I installed Mdk 9.0 on a box once, and for some reason, the swap would not get activated at boot. Go into the Mdk Control Center and look in the section that shows your HD's partition setup. Click on your swap and see if it says it is activated or not. If it isn't click "activate" and see what happens.
