  1. Have you tried re-configuring it with redhat-config-network? Try activating your connection. If it fails, try deleteing your card's profile and go through the steps to re-configure, then try to activate it again. This has happened to me, and this is what I do, and it usually fixes it, provided there aren't issues with the card itself.

What's a good network card for Mandrake 9.2

Linksys routers work well with Linux, so I think you are right about the card. One thing though, how long a run is it from the router to you box? I have one run that is very long and the new 10/100 cars will not work with it. I have to use an older "10" card for it to work right. I'm not sure why. I think Belkin NICs will work with Linux and Dlink. I've found most new NICs will and are very cheap.

You probably are like me in that I'm always looking for ways to make my business easier with Linux. Just last week, I got fed up with all the financial software that is offered in Windows as well as Linux. I also have a restaurant, and all book keeping programs I've tried are extremely bloated with way too many features I won't ever use. So, I decided to create my own under Gnumeric. It works great, and has saved me a big chunk of time doing books! Anyway, have you ever played TF?

Quote: Haven't really found a file manager that I like yet. Have you tried Krusader? It's a FileRunner/Gentoo type manager with excellent ftp support. You can drag and drop files between different machines! We've been using it at my radio station for quite a while and it has never crashed once.

IceWM will run every Gnome and KDE app I've ever tried to run. There are a few that give minor irritations, such as, Konsole does screwy things while trying to run it transparently in IceWM. I have incorporated into my IceWM menu the complete KDE and Gnome menus. The only place where it gets slightly more complicated is mounting and unmounting cdroms, usb readers, floppies, etc, but thats pretty easy to overcome. I just set in the menu entries to mount and umount the devices/file systems. Aside from the fact that it is blindingly faster than either KDE or Gnome, I like it because it is so very easily configured. There are many themes out there for IceWM, and it's a snap to create your own. I've not taken any screenshots in a while, but this is the last one I did, using a theme I created called "Void", shortly after I switched from MDK 9 to RH 9. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/352713/void1.jpg

Ditto to everything you said jimf43. That's how I started using IceWM, and after long stints with KDE and Gnome, it is still my DE of choice.

That would be a vid card issue for sure. Rats!! I'm not real up on vid cards for laptops but if you could find an Nvidia for it, it would probably work.

Try Morphix. If the live cd works well on your laptop, it should also work when installed to hd.

Many if not most Nics will work under Linux, and most are very inexpensive, $10-$15. Linksys works good. Refresh my memory on why you believe your card isn't working.. Edit: Never mind, I went back and read your post. If a new nic doesn't fix the problem, their may be router issues. Are using a wired connection from that router in the basement?

New to linux, trouble accessing Internet

Try configuring it again in the Mdk Control center, only this time, do not enter ip or gateway. It's been a while since I used MDK, but tell it to let your ISP provide the ip address and see if it will then connect. If you are going through a router the problem may be there. If from a modem directly, it may be confused and won't let you use it under Linux until you reset it. That can be the case with cable modems anyway. I'm not sure I'm helping, but just trying to throw out some ideas here to try..

New to linux, trouble accessing Internet

When you installed, were you given a chance to configure a firewall? If so, you may want to check into the MDK Control Center to see if the firewall security is too restrictive. How are you connected to the Internet? Directly from a modem or router? Did you try configuring your connection in the Mandrake Control Center?

Quote: But, when the say backup they mean it! partitioning/resizing a primary drive is risky with anything, even PartitionMagic 8. Can't say from personal experence, but, people that I trust say that the failure rate can be as high as 50%... scares me. ;( And I am one who can attest that it can happen! When I used to boot between Linux and Windows, I hosed my /home partition once after resizing with PM8.

If using Konqueror, try Mozilla and see if the same problem occurs. If using Mozilla, try Konqueror. Is your e-mail not connecting to the Internet either?

If you get it straightened out, try Abiword. It's a pretty good WP, and isn't nearly the CPU monster that OO is. I was looking over BLAG and it looks pretty cool! I'm glad to see you can use IceWM with it! I might take it for a spin if this Fedora thing doesn't work out...

I also have PM 8, and it rocks! edit: I could let you use my PM 8 since I've used it to destroy all my Windows partitions! I don't have anything I can install it on anymore!
  24. All of a sudden RPM is not working correctly. This of course, is also causing big problems with apt-get and yum. Neither will work correctly since both are RPM based. This problem never occured in Red Hat 8 or 9. I cannot update or uprade my sytem or any packages, nor can I install new RPMs. I cannot uninstall programs using rpm -e either! There is definately something wrong with the RPM program. I need all the help I can get. Any other Fedora Core 1 user having this problem? I have no idea how to begin troubleshooting this! Thanks Dapper Dan
