Having serious RPM problems with Fedora.

Thanks danleff, I guess I should have done an update to this sooner. Nothing I tried worked, and I've been reading about problems some folks have been having after upgrading from RH9 to Fedora. I decided the simplest solution was a complete nuke and pave. I'm back up with a brand new cleanly installed Fedora Core 1 and so far, no rpm problems. You remember that problem I mentioned about IceWM not getting installed or running properly on my mother's computer? I'm certain, that was related to the same problem. Her box had RH8, and I upgraded her to Fedora. I had the very same problems with hers as I just did with mine. The only real heart breaker with this is that I cannot use Galeon in Fedora, and I can't get Galeon to install without big dependency headaches. I had a lot of important bookmarks there, and wish I could import them to Firefox, which, incidentally I like better than Galeon. Does anyone know a way to import bookmarks from Galeon to Firefox? On the up side, IceWM was very easy to install and configure, I don't get ten thousand DCOP error messages every time I try to run KDE apps, or 20 thousand CORBA errors every time I try to run nautilus. The fonts in Abiword, Evolution, and Firefox are finally easy on the eyes, and Fedora seems to be a little quicker than RH9. I'm not getting that irritating tilde problem every time I hit delete either. I'm mostly very pleased with it! Also, this time I didn't install to my whole HD. I left 60 gigs free to install another distro. I'll be asking your advice when I get the nerve to do it!

Morphix now has a new website

I think Alex is busy with school and stuff, but I am amazed at what he has done with Morphix. It is always my first recommendation when suggesting a live cd.

    partitioning

Ask around. Someone you know is bound to have a copy of partition magic they'd let you "try out."

    Open Office on Redhat 9

What type errors? Dcop? Corba? At times, RH 9 can throw more errors on a screen than Windows can right before a crash!

    Newbie need help installing

Just the three .isos. Yeah, it would be a bummer to have to download all three at a really slow speed. You could always buy the .isos off the net. Some places charge just a few bucks for this.

You mean all the Fedora files? I would strongly recommend it. As a new user, it is very wise to install EVERYTHING to begin with. Once you get familiar, you can always delete what you don't want. If you get Fedora installed, and working satisfactorily, let me know and I'll show you how to install apt-get rpm, which will make your life with Linux MUCH easier.

I'm not sure if any Linux distro is going to help with your DSL, however, on the "I'm-fed-up-with-Xp-and-want-a free-distro" part.. http://mirrors.unixsol.org/redhat/fedora-core-1/

    NE2000 nic problem

Quote: I'm getting readyto give up on this as previously I considered myself a pretty skilled computer user but all of this is just way over my head. I paid $50 for the CD distribution from Mandrake and their support is basically nonexistent unless I want to pay another $50 for a phone incident. They don't answer my posts on "Mandrakeexpert.com." for days... mrobins3, I've been reading the posts here for a while, and you cannot imagine how many we see from new users wanting help with Mdk 9.2. There are a lot! I used to use Mdk 9.0 and when I tried 9.1 and 9.2, I ran into so many problems I switched to Red Hat 9.0. If you don't have the Mdk Control Center installed, does urpmi work? It may be worth considering to just do a re-install. Heck, between Mdk 8.2 and 9.0, I bet I re-installed 8 or 10 times before I felt I got it right! You may also want to consider trying a different distro. I presently am very impressed with Fedora Core 1 which you can download off the internet without charge. The Fedora community seems to be far better at addressing new users questions than was my experience, (which was exactly like yours!) with Mdk. Which ever distro you go with, it is always wise to install everything if you have the space. Don't give up!! This is all new and different and intimi[censored] but if I can learn Linux anyone can! Stay with it! Anything worthwhile takes patience. There are obstacles to overcome when migrating to Linux but in the end I gaurantee you will find that it is worth it!

Seems like I've read about this problem with MDK 9.1 before. Why not download and burn Mdk 9.0 and see if it installs. In my estimation 9.0 was far more stable and less problematic when installing than either 9.1 or 9.2. If it's important to you to have a newer distro, might I recommend Fedora Core 1? I've been using it for almost a week, up from RH 9, and it is really a fine distro.

    NE2000 nic problem

On the cd2 thing, you can still install packages from it and all the others using urpmi. Let's say you wanted to install gaim. At the command line as root, go.. urpmi gaim [enter] And it will install gaim by asking for some of the cd's you have. All this can also be done in the Mdk control center in the install new software section. Good Luck.
  12. How do you set it up so one distro doesn't install over another on the same drive? If, say Mdk 9.2 installs intself on / and /home , how does the next distro you install know not to install itself to those partitions? I'm sure you rename them somehow or something. Can you go into some detail about this and maybe write a table out showing how it works with two different distros? Thanks!
  13. That's really something! :x It's all I can do to keep up with two! Thanks danleff!
  14. Quote: This way you can add the lilo or grub entries to the already existing grub or lilo bootloader that you have on the MBR. Do you think it would matter if grub is installed to a /boot partition?

    Alsa?

Oh, I got it to work all right, but it just didn't ever sound really great. The Soundblaster sounds much better.

    Installing Firefox

Firefox is the first browser I've found since I started using Galeon a year and a half ago that I like better! The fonts are really nice!
  18. Danleff, I want to put a second Linux on my box too. I'm not really sure how to lay it out or how the partitions are set up in the fstab. I'll also be interested in following this post.
  19. jgrigg, it's your business, but 9.0 is more stable than 9.1.

    which desktop

konsole is easy to make transparent and is a good terminal for dragging into and copying from. I use Aterm, (the SuSe version) since it is the only terminal I've found that doesn't change the delete to a tilde while running IceWM under RH.

    Alsa?

I tried to get alsa working with a TB santa cruz card, and never got it to work right. It's sitting on my "boat anchor" shelf. I ran out and got a soundblaster. That card sure did sound good when I was using it under Windows..

    Update kernel Help Please

You have to install it. Go here and download the two binary packages. Installation should give no problems. Then open a terminal and as root type: apt-get update [enter] When it finishes, do the above again. Then type: apt-get install synaptic [enter] after it finishes, type: synaptic [enter] The Synaptic gui should then come up. Type in the name of packages you want to install in the search box and press enter. Follow the intuitive gui instructions. You can install many apps for Red Hat 9 using this, and it will solve all dependency problems for you! Good Luck!

    Update kernel Help Please

I do it with apt-get, and the latest updated kernel always works well for me. Unless there are special things you want to compile into it, apt-get will fix things for you with very little effort. Do you have apt-get installed?

as per the instructions from --help, multi-gnome-terminal --transparent Does not return a transparent terminal for me either.
