Upgrading to kernel 2.6.x in Fedora Core 1? NFORCE2 ?'s too!
Dapper Dan replied to macawgumbo's topic in Everything Linux
Why the rush getting the 2.6 kernel? Why not use 2.4 until all the issues with 2.6 are relatively straightened out and then upgrade? -
I've never tried that but I think you're on the right track. Couldn't he just run the install again, only this time as an upgrade rather than a full install and it'll still give him the opportunity to create a grub bootloader and boot disk?

Fedora is faster than RH 8 or 9!
Dapper Dan replied to Dapper Dan's topic in Linux Customization & Tweaking
I believe I'll hold off on 2.6 for now, but thanks! -
smoothe fonts on Fedora 1 and mozilla
Dapper Dan replied to chewmanfoo's topic in Linux Customization & Tweaking
I have worked my tail off all day trying to get these menu fonts in IceWM to look as good under Fedora as they do in RH9 and have come up empty. Boy, this one is tiring me out... ;( -
smoothe fonts on Fedora 1 and mozilla

My fonts in IceWM don't look great with Fedora like they did with RH9. Hmmm... -
Fedora Core 1 and Soundmax Integrated Audio..
Dapper Dan replied to haggard's topic in Linux Hardware
If it were me, I'd go out and buy a Soundblaster and be done with it! -
Thanks, Steve. Actually I had someone over at Morphix fill me in on a utility I didn't know about called wlcardconfig. After running it, The wep encryption key becomes permanent until it's changed. We now regularly boot up and down and the key stays put! Do you know about sniffers? I tried Kermit but was very confused about how to get it working. Ultimately it would be nice to have a sniffer with a nice easy to use front end, for finding and listing frequencies in Hotels etc. Thanks again!

Don't know, but the fonts in Galeon look pretty good! -
I use RH 9 and love it far better than my days with Mdk 9. I thought Mdk 9.1 qnd 9.2 were so problematic that I switched to RH. Right now, I'm installing Fedora Core 1 on my mom's computer. So far it looks great, and it does seem to boot up faster than RH 9.

Systems Stalls when starting Netowrk on Boot Up (Fedora)
Dapper Dan replied to landholl's topic in Linux Networking
On second thought, I have a few things that come to my mind you may want to consider. It's quite possible your cable modem will only work with Windows when directly connected to the nic. It is also possible the modem is looking for an ip that is assigned to your Windows OS and the one assigned to your Linux OS is different. Cable companies are real stingy with what gets the connection. The answer would be to buy a router *if* this is the problem. Linksys works well with Linux as does NetGear. I think Dlink works too. I know it sucks to have to get a router, especially for just one machine, but if this were my problem, this would be the next thing I would try. Maybe you have a computer friend who would let you borrow a router just to see. If not, you might can do what I did once. I told the folks at OfficeMax that their router was purported to work with Linux, and if I couldn't get it to work, could I bring it back. They said yes, it didn't, and I did. -

I sure wish I could help you with this, but I'm afraid anything I might suggest would only be guessing. Sorry. -
Maillion, Is it a USB memory/reader stick? I've set up four boxes with usb memory devices and used these directions for all of them. One was Morphix, two were RH and one was Mandrake 9.0. The directions worked for all of them. You may have to go /sbin/lsmod and /sbin/modprobe instead of just lsmod and modprobe though..

Install-problem with Mozilla on Mandrake 9.2.
Dapper Dan replied to Maxwell Rain's topic in Linux Software
Check in /usr/lib/mozilla(1.2.1)(1.5) and see if the permissions are set to 755. Also check the permissions on /usr/bin/mozilla and see if they are also set to 755. Did you by any chance try to install javaplugins for your browser? Also, Galeon is based on Mozilla and is much faster. If you would like to try it, at a terminal type: galeon [enter] If it isn't there, you can install it by doing as root: urpmi galeon [enter] It'll probably beg for a cd or two.. -
Install-problem with Mozilla on Mandrake 9.2.
Dapper Dan replied to Maxwell Rain's topic in Linux Software
Go to konsole terminal and do: mozilla [enter] and see if it comes up. If it won't, it should offer some error messages to let you know what it needs to run. Also, try typing in mozilla as root and see if that works. If it gives error messages, copy and paste them here so we can see what it's complaining about. konsole will let you copy and paste. -
I started using it as a gaming name when playing Team Fortress, and still do. Did you see the Cohen Brothers movie "Oh, Brother Where Art Thou?" It's a few years old, but is ROFL hysterical, especially if you're a Southerner! In the movie, the main character, played by Nick Clooney is always fussing with, and is very particular about his hair. He uses a special hair pomade called "Dapper Dan." That's why I chose the name.

yum..anyone else having hte out of server prob?
Dapper Dan replied to matttah's topic in Linux Software
I just checked my yum for RH 9 and everything is working perfectly. Maybe the Fedora-Yum repositories are down.. -
Not sure if this has been posted in the past, but i love it.

LOL! That's very good! -
126, I would recommend trying out one of the live cd distros to see if Linux is for you. That way you don't have to commit it to your hd until you have an idea if it is to your liking, and it configures your hardware from the cd. There are several to choose from, the most famous being Knoppix. I personally prefer Morphix, but there are many more. In fact, I believe even Mandrake has a live cd version of 9.2 out as well. If you check out a live cd version, the good news is, it will not have an effect on your existring OS. You may have ot unplug your box and wait 30 seconds after running a live cd, and before booting your regular OS.

So you'll get this in the morning..Right now I'm drinking sour mash and will soon enjoy a beef loin I'm cooking on the grill.. You don't want to be root except when you are installing or uninstalling or doing general maintainance type things. When you are root, there is no protection! You can completely remove your /usr directory, and Linux will let you! Only become root to do and fix things, and still do them with caution! During regular computing, always do as a regular user.

To share files between W98 and Linux, you will need samba. I've never installed or used it before so I couldn't help there. One of the others here should be able to give you some direction with samba though. Can you see the files in your fat32 partition? You should be able to write and read them both, at least that is the way MDK 9.0 always did it. It may be as simple as changing permissions on the files themselves, or becoming root before trying to read/write. open a terminal and type: su [enter] enter password and enter. Now open up konqueror.. konqueror [enter] and go to your windows in /mnt and see if you can read and write now...

Download sdk-1_4_2-nb-3_5_1-bin-linux.bin ( Linux (.bin) ) from the sun java website. Then follow these instructions..

Most people just cruise and shop. Only a few of us ever try to help. For Gaim, it should be as simple as opening a terminal and typing: gaim [enter]

Good advice, though remember it's umount /mnt/cdrom without an n between the u and m. "unmount" won't work.
