Which version of java did you install, and what version of Mozilla are you running?

Quote: I'm not even going to get into the "ease-of-use" issue, but, My systems running W2K are just as stable as anything I've seen in Linux. That has not been our experience at all. Our main office computer, a new Dell, loaded with XP locked and crashed 6 times in less than a month causing loss of data. Linux apps will definitely lock occasionally, but we can always "xkill" it without loss except for this fiasco which I don't attribute to Linux. Running Quickbooks on XP caused two of the six with loss of data. We have yet to experience any such losses running Quickbooks on Windows 98 running on Win4lin on top of Linux.

When it comes to MS the two terms are synonymous.

As a desktop we are finding that, minus a few irritations, the stability of Linux is a quality which far exceeds the "ease-of-use" conveniences offered by Bill and Steve. The only app we must use that is Microsoft oriented is Quickbooks. We run it with Win4lin, still it is more stable than it ever was natively. As far as other apps go, mostly we use Abiword and Gnumeric. If you ever need a spreadsheet program, Gnumeric absolutely rules! It just will not crash! I've tried! It just runs and runs! We use it on a daily basis to do daily and weekly broadcast logs. Bill and Steve are gonna sell Longhorn on the same premise they sold XP, that it will take care of all the security problems we have had with previous versions. Yes, Longhorn will be more secure in the short run, but eventually it will be exploited just like XP was, yet again, setting the stage for Bill and Steve to sell us yet another version of MS software that will take care of the security issues exploited under Longhorn! Linux is very challenging, but it's worth the time and effort I have invested just to keep Microsoft out of my life! Thank God I'm off Bill and Steve's plantation! I'm free at last!!

I know what you mean about the broken thing. On my wife's Toshiba Satellite laptop we installed Morphix-Gnome which is based on Knoppix, thus is Debian, and I made the mistake of doing an apt-get upgrade. Before, in "stable", her pcmcia Orinoco gold card worked without a hitch. After the upgrade, it wouldn't work at all! I know the folks at Debian get a lot of flack about their stable version being way behind the times, but often, I think they are right to stay with something that is known to work versus being cutting edge and having things break. Maillion, you should be able to access synaptic by merely opening a terminal and as root going: synaptic [enter] It should come right up. If it doesn't, in a terminal as root go: apt-get install synaptic [enter] and that should install it.

I ran into this exact same thing with trying to compile Icepref in RH9. There's a lot out there on the net on this having gtk installed but it can't find it problem..wait, I might be able to find one of my old posts... Yes! Here's one, and here's another.. I know this won't help with the problem, but thought you might be interested anyway. Please let me know if you find a solution. Sorry I couldn't help more...

Yeah, I'm a big Morphix fan too! Can I not run Gentoo from a directory? Right now I'd like to do a little research with it before attempting a full install.
-
OK, I've downloaded the Gentoo stage 1 tarball and untarred it into it's own directory. So what do I do now? Do I edit my RedHat grub.conf to have Gentoo as a choice at boot? What do I add? It seems the more I look at the directions on the Gentoo site, the more confused I get.. ;(

You can apt-get k3b with Debian? Cool! You can't with RH 9.. that I know of..
-
kailinin, I found this. It sounds like SuSe 9 Professional might be worth checking out.
-
k3b works good with my RH9, but I also like Burncenter, as it is a very simple and easy to use command line burner. Try it and see what you think...

Mandrake, Dell and the great LG CDROM fiasco !!

You didn't say pretty please.. -
I've just gotta tell y'all this... Last week, my three year old daughter was sitting in my lap watching while I was showing my wife the new IBM Linux TV commercials with the blonde haired boy from IBM's website. After looking at three of them, I casually said "That's kewl!" Last Sunday night, I was working at the radio station while my wife and daughter were at home. They had the televison on tuned to the Super Bowl. One of the Linux commercials came on, and my daughter exitedly pointed to the televison and said, "Look mommy, it's Kewl!!", thinking that was the little boy's name.

I haven't used it extensively, but you might want to have a look at Balsa too. It may get you through until the upgrade.

Performance SuSE 8.1 Pro HELP!!

Doesn't look it. I wish I could tell you where to look from here. Sorry I couldn't help more. -
I use Kmail and Evolution. Kmail is simple and easy to configure, and has never crashed on me. Evolution is, in my opinion the best e-mail client of all I've tried, but it does tend to crash occasionally, with no loss of data. The features offered in Evolution make it worth it though. Especially since it is easy to kill if it freezes or won't start because it is still running. I also think Mozilla-mail is very good. If you already have Mozilla installed, it may also be available on your box. To find out, go to a terminal and type: mozilla --mail [enter] If it doesn't come up, it should be fairly easy to install. If you like a light email client, there's Sylpheed and Balsa. There's also mutt, a command line email program. I've tried most of them and think Evolution has the most to offer.

Performance SuSE 8.1 Pro HELP!!
Dapper Dan replied to POB/London's topic in Linux Customization & Tweaking
I ran into a similar problem once, and as it turned out, had several instances of some programs running that I didn't really need. At a terminal type: top [enter] And see if there are any programs running that seem to be using more resources than they should. If so, you can then go to "services" and turn them off if you are certain they are not needed. -
I want to eventually install Gentoo on the same HD with my present RedHat 9. Is anyone here running two distros on the same hd? If so, would you please post your /etc/fstab so I can get an idea of how things are to be setup? Thanks.

Have a look at these.. http://www.nextag.com/3D_Accelerators~Nvidiaz300260z0zB10zmainz5-htm

Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, and I agree with you about Mdk 9.2. Per chance however, did you try Mdk 9.0? or how about Red Hat 9? or Knoppix? Suse? Gentoo, Debian, Morphix, Slackware? If Linux is as you say, "stolen code", (which it isn't and the courts will soon show that SCO has no case), why did you want to run it to begin with? And now that you weren't successful at operating one version of one distro, you're in a position to recommend to the rest of us a "really reliable operating system" such as Unix or Windows?? ;(

If I may make a suggestion, choose Nvidia. They seem to be more Linux friendly than ATI, although I've not had much trouble with the two ATI cards I have used.

Anybody know what app opens a .dat file?
-
Asit turned out, I e-mailed the sender back, asking which app it was creatred with. She said it was sent by mistake. I did open it as an .rtf, and could make out that it was created with Microsoft Word,(what else.. ;( ), but that is as far as I got. I did some googleing, and it seems that files sometime get corrupted either in the sending or recieving and just come out as a .dat. Thanks though!

Run the Mandrake mouse configure utility in the Mandrake Control Center again. http://www.distrowatch.com/images/screenshots/mandrake-mouse-large.png
