Did you try running mouse configurator utility again from in the Mandrake Control Center? http://www.distrowatch.com/images/screenshots/mandrake-mouse-large.png
-
You could try out the demo version of Nero. I bought it, and it's a pretty good utility. Not nearly as good as k3b is though. If you do use it, be sure not to use the "wizard." Click open file and choose "burn image" when creating from an iso. You're brave to try the Debian install! I tried 5 times and never could do it. An easy way to have Debian is to install Knoppix which is Debian based and gives you acces to Debian apt-get repositories. The install is much easier..

If I'm reading the error correctly, I'ts looking for a later version of GTK. Check and see if gtk2 is listed in your synaptic tree as being installed. If not, install it and try again. In fact, I would install gtk2-devel and anything listed that has a "gtk2" in it. I ran into similar problems trying to install Icepref in redhat 9. I'm sorry to say I could never find a satisfactory answer for my problem. Maybe we'll be luckier and find a solution for yours.

Do you gusy suggest i upgrade to mozilla firebird?
Dapper Dan replied to matttah's topic in Linux Software
I did a side by side comparrison of Firebird and Galeon. Both were about the same as far as speed is concerned, but the fonts to me on most pages looked much better in Galeon. -
The DSL modem shouldn't care if there is a router between it and your computer. A lot of these cable and DSL companies will say they don't support Linux because they simply don't even know what it is, and they can't support something they don't want to understand. I prefer Linksys. You can pick up a wired Linksys router at a reasonable price. Netgear works well too.

It will pay off in the end, trust me! To keep things uncomplicated, stay away from tarballs unless that is the only way to install something you really want. Always go with the mdk rpm. It makes installing and uninstalling much simpler. Then, once you start feeling comfortable, try installing tarballs. One step at a time!

Look in the Mandrake Control Center in the same location where you installed IceWM. There is also an icon for uninstalling apps. That is the best way to uninstall in MDK.
-
It's been a while since I configured MDK, so I forgot about that boot options thing. I'm pretty sure you can go back in there and configure it to autologin to IceWM should you so choose.
-
type: su [enter] it will ask for password to become root. as root type: kdm [enter] if you have kdm installed, a box will come up which is the kde login manager. click and look on the tab beside "Session type" and see if IceWM is a choice. If it isn't, choose "Failsafe" and put in your user id and password and enter. when the Failsafe terminal comes up in the lower left hand corner type: icewm [enter] This is a rough way to get to icewm, and you can fix everything where it will boot to icewm automatically like it does with KDE, but I'm just trying to get you to IceWM so you can have a look at it and smoke it over..

OK so your doing auto login. After booting to your KDE desktop, it doesn't take you out to the kdm login manager at all if you then press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace?
-
Are you not booting to the kdm or gdm user login manager? Are you booting to black screen (runlevel 3) and then doing "startx" to go to your desktop environment?

Changing from KDE to Window Manager like Blackbox ?
Dapper Dan replied to Maxwell Rain's topic in Everything Linux
Maxwell Rain, as far as office apps go, I don't use Open/Star office because it's resource hog! It's getting better though. I like both Abiword and Kword as word processors but mostly use Abiword since it is more versatile and easy on resources. If you need a spreadsheet program, Gnumeric is the king! We use it on a daily basis at our radio station and it has never crashed once! -
IceWM should just work for you if you installed it via the Mdk software installer. There is no reason to try installing the IceWM tarball on top of it. Press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace to get back out to the kdm user login. Look under Sessions. IceWM *should* be there for you to choose. If it isn't, choose "Failsafe." It will come up as an xterm terminal in the lower right hand side of your screen. Type: icewm [enter] And you will have an icewm DE

Changing from KDE to Window Manager like Blackbox ?
Dapper Dan replied to Maxwell Rain's topic in Everything Linux
Are you using Morphix-Gnome? I used apt-get to have IceWM on my wife's laptop the same as you, and it made the necessary entries so we could have IceWM as a Sessions choice. If you are using Morphix-Gnome and for whatever reason it didn't make the changes, you have to edit your /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions. In there you will see the other DEs. You can do this in Nautilus or konqueror. go there and make a copyof the GNOME entry, and rename it IceWM. Then, open it. It should have this: Code: #!/bin/bashexec /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession gnome Change it to: Code: #!/bin/bashexec /usr/bin/icewm Now, when gdm comes up, you should see IceWM as a Sessions choice. Another way to use it is to choose "Failsafe" as a Sessions choice, and when it comes up, just type: icewm [enter] -
Changing from KDE to Window Manager like Blackbox ?
Dapper Dan replied to Maxwell Rain's topic in Everything Linux
Blackbox is good, but in my humble opinion IceWM is the very best DE out there. It uses very little resources, is lean and lightening fast, and has a simple and highly configurable interface. Best of all, it's right there on your Mandrake cd's to install! I've been using IceWM since I ran Mdk 9.0, when I fell in love with it. If you would like to try it out, just go to your menu and go to Configure-Mandrake Control Center- Software Management-Install Software. Type icewm in the search window and it should come right up. Also, be sure to install Icepref, which is the IceWM configuration tool. To give you an idea of how configurable it is, here's a recent screen of mine... http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/352713/void1.jpg -
Mattah, It's always frustrating when moving from Windows to Linux in that, there are certain pieces of hardware we've already bought that simply won't work in our new OS's environment. I've got a Visioneer scanner that's a boat anchor since I have no Windows OS installed anywhere to run it. Chalk it up to another sacrifice we make in order to enjoy real freedom. The good news is, there are always folks in the community looking for ways to make unsupported hardware work. Let's hope someone figures out a way you can use that scanner/printer!

[M 9.2.] Toshiba Laptop Screen error : turning screen off/on
Dapper Dan replied to Maxwell Rain's topic in Everything Linux
You know, my wife's Toshiba Satellite with Morphix does the same sort of thing for a few seconds after bootup and before bringing up the DE. It never last any time though. Does yours stay like that? -
This is nuts! Now it works in Galeon and didn't before!! :x :x :x
-
I can't figure this one!! My Mozilla works, but firebird and Galeon give that error!?! Just for fun, I'm gonna try konqueror and Lynx.. I LOVE the blue tux linux wallpaper! It's on my IceWM desktop right now!!

Linux Mandrake 9.2 - Starting after first install
Dapper Dan replied to mattmoooo's topic in Linux Software
To quickly get used to the terminal, open one, become root and type: urpmi galeon [enter] -
Do you have Galeon? If so, try it..
-
Hmmm! Mozilla works for me too! I wonder why I get that with Galeon and Firebird and not Mozilla! Weird! Anyway, Great screens! Thanks!

Linux Mandrake 9.2 - Starting after first install
Dapper Dan replied to mattmoooo's topic in Linux Software
Don't be embarrased, you're in a whole new environment. You know you can put an icon on your KDE desktop for quick access. Just right click on the desktop- create new- link to application. for "command" put konsole. name it "konsole" of course, and under "permissions" at the bottom, click on different user, and your user name. click on the icon to change it, otherwise you'll be stuck with a blue cog... konsole is the default KDE terminal. You can copy to, and paste from it. Very handy when you need to show someone error messages. -
