Nice of you to provide that outstream, but I can't get them to open for me. Galeon keeps saying "bcvrf@yahoo.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." Same thing with MozillaFirebird. ;( Maybe only you can see them since it is your briefcase?

Oops, I'm sorry, I missed this latest post of yours until now. I didn't mean to ignore you.. Try: rpm -ivh pkgconfig-0.14.0-3.i386.rpm [enter] And you are attempting to install pkgconfig rpm from the same directory where you downloaded it to? ...apt-get could sure get all this squared away in a hurry...

I didn't know that Sony Vaio came in pc, I thought it was just a laptop. Morphix-Gnome may work out, but you want know until you try it. There's also Knoppix which is the most popular of the live cd distros. With Knoppix or Morphix, you will essentially be getting Debian, but without the murderous Debian install! Danleff knows Knoppix, but Morphix, (which is based on Knoppix) comes with an fdisk partitioning tool and an auto install to hd program. I would recommend something like this.. /boot ------------ / ------------ swap ------------ /home You should also use either ext3 or reiserFS as file systems. ext2 is not journalized and will take forever to scan if you don't shut down properly. Also a rule of thumb is, swap should be three times the size of your ram.

You won't need wine or winex for Quake2 as it is already ported to Linux... http://www.gamesdistrict.co.uk/menu/left/issues/linuxquake/

Help installing Linux on Sony Vaio computer

Never fooled with a Sony laptop, but I would recommend running a live cd disto on it to see how well it works. Have a look at this.. If it works well as a live cd on your Sony, chances are it will work as well when installed to hd. Morphix-Gnome is a good choice and works well with our Toshiba Satellite laptop.

I don't know it as a fact, but I think this is the first time Linux was ever advertised on television.

What happens when you type: gdm [enter] or: startx [enter] ? If you get error messages, please tell us what they are.

Congratulations! Xwindows is what makes GUI and DE possible.

IBM is one of the biggest proponents of Linux there is. Since the commercial came out, I've had people I know say things like, "I saw this commercial the other night, and they were talking about that Linux computer stuff I've heard you talk about!"

Try: umount /mnt/cdrom [enter] that's umount without an 'n'.

Quote: I use Morphix LightGUI that will fit on a 256mb JumpDrive Secure how can I take a ISO File and mount it on that USB? My conputer will boot from a USB. Lucky you! Mine won't! I've not tried this, but I think it should be as simple as burning a Morphix-Lite cd-r and then copy it's contents and paste it into the usbstick. Then you'll also have a handy Morphix-Lite cd for rescue should you ever need it. Morphix live cd has gotten me out of a lot of jams!

I NEED HELP SETTING UP INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What type modem do you have? Who is the manufacturer of it? -
In most cases when hardware, and that is any hardware, (i.e. - car engines, boat engines, air conditioners, computers, etc.) works normally and gives problems after a while, and then you have to let it "cool down" for it to work normally again for another while, it is almost always heat related. If you feel comfortable tinkering with it, you could take the side cover off, turn it on, and see if the fans on the processor, video card and so on, are running. They will freeze up sometimes do to dust and other outside particles. Make sure the ducts into and out of your box are dust free and not clogged. Check to make sure your fan is running properly. Don't touch anything while it is running though! Shut it off, and unplug, then ground yourself by touching the metal of the case before going in to work. Heat is my guess as to the source of the problem. I could be wrong though...

Got JVM installed...maybe i have to set a path to it?
Dapper Dan replied to matttah's topic in Linux Software
Get the rpm fot Gnutella here. After downloading, "cd" to the directory where you downloaded it. If it's in your home directory, you shouldn't have to do this. Then as root type: rpm -Uvh gtk-gnutella-0.93-1.i586.rpm [enter] ..and it should install without problems. To run type: gtk-gnutella [enter] gtk-gnutella is on the same network as limewire. -

Daum, there is a much easier way. Download gtk gnutella. It will install without complaining, and it does the same thing as limewire.. dannypapper -
Try using: j2sdk-1_4_2-nb-3_5_1-bin-linux.bin instead, and see if the same thing happens. It's an easier install anyway.

Welcome I wouldn't try upgrading your server to Linux until you are very familiar with it. Some get it sooner and some later, but it's going to be more challenging for you to use and understand how Linux works than it took with windows. Take your time and learn from your mistakes. If you try to rush it, Linux will make you bang your head against a brick wall in frustration... :x As far as NTFS is concerned, you can copy from it, but you cannot write to it from Linux, at least, not that I'm aware of. While learning Linux, make Google your co-pilot. I'm not sure it's possible in this day and time to learn Linux without Google. Let's say you want to know how to install a rpm. Just Google... .rpm mandrake how install or something like that. Mandrake comes with a really good package management system , you should try. From the menu just go to Configure-Mandrake Control Center-Software management- install new software, and type in the software you think you want to install.

It's been a while since I had to do a recovery with the disk, but as well as I remember, you have to mount the image thusly: mount /mnt/sysimage [enter] then: cd /mnt/sysimage [enter] then: ls [enter] And you should see the files on your computer from the / directory. Can you give us a few more details? Did you ever have it running with X? Did you do something wrong or edit a file somewhere that's causing the problem?

Quote: I need to get linux. I'm thinking either mandrake 9.1 or 9.0. Is 9.1 similar to 9.2? How stable is it? I've had bad expirences with 9.2... Yeah, you and everybody else it seems. One thing I've learned from seeing all these post here seeking help for MDK 9.2 problems is that I made a good choice when deciding against it in favor of RH 9 for my home pc. If you go with MDK, Maillion is correct. 9.0 is far more stable and predictable. I loved my time with MDK 9.0, and still use it on two boxes at work.
-
What distro are you using? RH 9 is bad about that if you try to install with the gui installer.

what major distros are using 2.6 kernel now or soon?

I have enough hd space to run my present distro and Gentoo. How would I go about setting up so I could run both? -
With 512 ram and no swap, you should be running faster than with a swap! That is dependant of course on what type apps you are running. I play Half-Life and it's mods under Winex3, and they run noticably faster when my swap is unmounted. All other of my programs run faster too.

Can Gentoo be installed directly from another distro, or do you have to wipe the old and start over?
