hollywood63, be sure to 'cd' to the directory which contains the zipped tarball, not to the zipped tarball itself. Think of it as walking into a room (directory) to open a package (drv_z42-0.4.1.tar.gz), not going into a room and into the package. If you downloaded it to your 'hollywood' directory, you won't need to cd to that location since, when you open a terminal you'll already be there. It should go something like this for you... Code: [hollywood@01flht hollywood]$ suPassword:[root@01flht hollywood]# gunzip drv_z42-0.4.1.tar.gz[root@01flht hollywood]# tar xvf drv_z42-0.4.1.tardrv_z42/drv_z42/COPYINGdrv_z42/ChangeLogdrv_z42/READMEdrv_z42/src/drv_z42/src/z42_cmyk.cdrv_z42/z42tool/drv_z42/z42tool/src/drv_z42/z42tool/src/z42tool.cdrv_z42/z42tool/src/Makefile.indrv_z42/z42tool/src/z42tool.hdrv_z42/z42tool/src/main.cdrv_z42/z42tool/src/Makefile.amdrv_z42/z42tool/src/support.hdrv_z42/z42tool/src/support.cdrv_z42/z42tool/src/interface.hdrv_z42/z42tool/src/interface.cdrv_z42/z42tool/READMEdrv_z42/z42tool/pixmaps/drv_z42/z42tool/pixmaps/logo2.pngdrv_z42/z42tool/install-shdrv_z42/z42tool/autogen.shdrv_z42/z42tool/configure.acdrv_z42/z42tool/Makefile.amdrv_z42/z42tool/stamp-h.indrv_z42/z42tool/acconfig.hdrv_z42/z42tool/aclocal.m4drv_z42/z42tool/missingdrv_z42/z42tool/config.h.indrv_z42/z42tool/mkinstalldirsdrv_z42/z42tool/Makefile.indrv_z42/z42tool/configuredrv_z42/z42tool/depcompdrv_z42/INSTALLdrv_z42/TODOdrv_z42/FAQ[root@01flht hollywood]# cd drv_z42/[root@01flht hollywood]# vi READMEDRV_Z42=======What is it?-----------This project is a driver / configuration program for the Lexmark Z42 printer. The printer driver was reported to work with the Lexmark Z43, and the CompaqIJ1200 also (which is basically a relabeled Z42).The configuration program should work with these printers, andalso with the Lexmark Z52.I think the Z42 is a very nice printer. Unfortunately Lexmarkdid not make a Linux driver for the Z42, so I had to write my own. It's astrange thing: hardware manufactorers not releasing protocols: you do want to@"README" 104L, 3168C 1,1 Top To move down the page in vi, press the down arrow. To get out of the readme from vi, just press escape, then: : x [enter] (without a space between : and x) (..it makes a ;( here...) After getting out of the README which you viewed with vi, it appears that you install it by typing: /install-sh [enter] You may have to look around, read some more and work with it though. If you have any questions at all, I'm here to help. Good Luck!

I don't know if this will help out but you could try it. I don't even use VNC. From a default screen on my client box (which has a bare minimum install of RH 9), I ssh to the server which has all the apps and programs. Both are on the same LAN. Upon connection and sign in, I just type "icewm" which gives me a de, but you can use the others too. Then I can run whatever I want on the server from the remote box, just as if I were at the server. It has always rebooted or shut down when I've commanded it to. This may be a way to see if the problem is somehow related to VNC. When you try the shutdown or reboot commands from the console, are you attempting it outside of X, or pulling up a terminal on the server while in X? If while in X, I would also try just connecting to the server via ssh, then doing a shutdown or reboot command from the console. If it still hangs at reboot then there is something else going on. I've had boxes hang at shutdown and you have to manually power them off. I've never figured out what causes this.

Why am I wasting my time on this..? This is NUTS!!
Dapper Dan replied to allen.panther's topic in Linux Software
Actually, I think that is in /etc/X11/XF86Config. One thing that annoys me about RH is that redhat-config-xfree86 will not run if you don't have X, but you can't get X unless you run redhat-config-xfree86! This just happened to me on a machine I'm building for a friend. I wish you could also just run xf86config to get the monitor set up. I never could get it to run and even tried to edit the XF68Config using vi. I finally gave up and did a reinstall with a different monitor! -
Just read that post outstream. Thank you for posting it. It will be a big help to new RH users who are dual booting!

Are you dual booting with Windows? -
Linux Mandrake 9.2 - Starting after first install
Dapper Dan replied to mattmoooo's topic in Linux Software
Congratulations! You've got a screen, which is a lot more than some other 9.2 users have gotten right after install. -
Quote: c`mmon guys what r u talking about? the support for mounting NTFS partition in red hat 9 is AVAILABLE. Yes, but RH doesn't configure it all for you upon install like MDK does. When you install MDK 9.0, it automatically configures itself so you can mount NTFS from /mnt/windows right after install. Very handy if you're a new Linux user since you don't have to figure it out. Since I no longer have any Windows partitions on any of my computers, I've not tried mounting NTFS partitions from RH to know how well it does or doesn't work..
-
That's one thing I'll say about Mandrake that is a big plus over RH. If you have a fat or NTFS partition on your HD, MDK will find and mount it for you upon install under /mnt. I didn't even realize other distros didn't do the same thing until switching to RH.

Forgive me if you already know this but, did you "cd" to the directory where those files were downloaded before trying to extract them? If so, what you are doing should work. Try also: gunzip install_drv_z42-0.4.1.tar.gz [enter] then: tar xvf install_drv_z42-0.4.1.tar [enter]

Problem installing DSL-modem - but maybe you can help me :)
Dapper Dan replied to xophEr's topic in Linux Networking
I tried to get the linuxant drivers to work with a conexant modem once and almost went for the Colt 45! What a pain without end.. -
You can install Xmms in about 30 seconds using apt-get rpm which installs without any dependancy problems on Fedora. If you use Red Hat or Fedora, apt-get will set you free!!
-
They aren't cheap, but if you want a 56k modem that will work with Linux, also consider Actiontec. Their v92 call waiting external serial modem works flawlessly right out of the box.
-
RH 9 is not putting you on the outside of the cutting edge like Fedora, so you can count on it being more predictable. I will go to Fedora, but not now. There are things to work out with it, so I'll wait a few more months and do an apt-get dist upgrade. RH 9 is doing everything I want Linux to do for now, so I'm a happy puppy..
-
danleff, on a related note, how user friendly is the Knoppix install? I finally figured out the install with Morphix, but it's still a little rough around the edges.
-
I ran across this flash presentation about IBM and Linux and thought y'all might want to have a look at it..
-
Sounds like a perfect match between you and Mandrake 9.0, although with RH 9 you get apt-get-rpm. I had to do many installs before I came up with a combination that I felt comfortable with. I think it just goes with the territory..

I'll be honest, I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it has something to do with cable modem recognizing only one mac or ip address so when you switch to another box it will not work because it is looking for the one it was originally connected to. I just wish I'd thought of this before you bought that nic! Sorry.

Quote: ...like I said, I'm constantly flipping the ethernet cable back and forth. SilverGator, while Im waiting on his response, a thought occured to me. Are you taking the Cat 5 cable that runs from the modem and switching the other end of it between your laptop and your pc or is it coming from a router? I think this may be the source of your problem. With cable, the modem looks for a mac address and it will only work with just one. I think that is why it works with your laptop and not your pc. You must have a router to make both work. Am I on to something here, or are you using a router?
-
Hmm. Very perplexing! Everything works, but it won't work! I'll ask my "go to" Linux guy for help. He does this type thing for a cable company. I'll try to get you an answer as soon as possible. In the meantime, if anyone else has ideas about this and can assist SilverGator in any way, please step in.

I've had it hang there with me before, usually after an install. If I shut my box down completely and count thirty seconds, then reboot, that usually fixes it.
-
I couldn't find any results on it at Transgaming.com. I don't know if it will work with Winex or not.
-
When you run redhat-control-network or whatever it is now called in Fedora, and you click "activate" does it say it is is activated? Are both eth0 and eth1 showing up there?
-
SilverGator, this may be a dumb question but, your Internet connection works OK? it checks out when running it under Windows or something? Is there a router between your box and modem? cable/DSL modems can go bad. I had to have one replaced just a year ago. Other than that, When my computer hangs and fails at eth0, my first thought is that the ISP is down, and am always right as it comes back up after a while. I use cable at home and DSL at work. The problem may be before it gets to your box since it sounds like you've done everything right. If your connection is checking out OK, my advice in such sutuations is to just run down to the computer store and buy a pci nic. I saw some Belkins and D-link nics last night at OfficeMax for $15.00. (Don't know how much more they'd be in New York..) Installing a pci nic *should* get you up and running provided there are no issues with your Internet connection. Hardware detection and configuration is really good in RH 9. I assume it works as well with Fedora. Good Luck.

My Visioneer scanner is a boat anchor too. I'll sacrafice a piece of hardware or two in order to use Linux.

But most of us were trained by Windows NOT to google and look for answers, except to ask Microsoft, or the guy we bought the computer from. . When I used Windows, I searched with Yahoo!. Now, I spend probably half my time on the computer Googling, looking for answers to my and other people's questions. New Linux users must also learn how to search for answers on the net in addition to trying to learn Linux.
