Problem installing DSL-modem - but maybe you can help me :)
Dapper Dan replied to xophEr's topic in Linux Networking
Your Nic should work with no problems under Linux, so you can rule it out if you still can't get connected. -
Assuming you are an experienced Linux user, I would go with Mandrake 9.0 or Red Hat 9.0.

I googled the Belkin and could come up with nothing on it working with Linux. This page shows no available drivers. My experience has been that usb hardware of this nature is very difficult if not impossible to run with Linux. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I'd be extremely surprised if you got it working. Let's hope I'm wrong. Here's a really good page to help in finding what will work with Linux though. Good Luck!

Honestly, that Telewell site appears to be in need of maintainance. I'm afraid that isn't a very good sign. Yes, I would try the new driver you found. While Google-ing I found very little on your modem. You have nothing to lose at this point by trying whatever drivers you find that might work. If Telewell does not answer your requests for support, and you cannot get the modem to work, you may want to consider shopping around for a modem that is known to work with Linux. What type NIC (network interface card) are you using? -
That is something you should do well after becoming familiar with Linux basics and have a reasonable amount of knowledge about upgrading kernels. I'm still using 2.4 kernel and intend to do so for at least another several months. There is a lot for you to learn, and Linux can at times be quite frustrating. Take your time..

Based on what you've said, my hunch is, you've just got bad cd's (for whatever reason). I would re-download all the ISOs and check them with this md5sum for Windows/Dos, then burn them to disk. Don't have a burner? Here's the Nero burner you can try out, and if you like it you can buy it! danleff has good advice about precautions and particulars on the actual burning process, I'm sure he'd be glad to share. Good luck!

These are the things that come to my mind after reading your post. 1. Did you do a mid5sum check of the file to make sure the isos are the right size? 2. Were there any errors when burning the image to disk? 3. Sometimes an Iso can be corrupted from the source, so your download of it is corrupted as well. (fairly rare, but it does happen..) 4. What type of errors is it showing when you try to boot? Or does it do nothing at all? 5. Are you getting errors when trying the floopy boot? If so what? You sound like a pretty sharp computer guy, I'd hate to see you just give up..

Don't know if this will help solve the problem, but I found these for you..

What Sulake said is what I did to get K3B working also. After editing my /boot/grub/grub.conf file, it works perfectly. I wish I could tell you how to do it with Lilo..

When I was using Mandrake, I always set the Internet congifuration to "let ISP asign IP" or however it is worded. If it's not a Mandrake configuration problem, I've run into this with motherboard nics not working too. You may want to consider just running down to the computer store and buying a pci slot nic which are very affordable,(10-15 bucks), and almost all of them will work with Linux. If you decide to do this, check here on pci nics though, just to be sure.

Quote: And you think this redhat 9.0 driver should work with fedora? The problem is this: Unless you can find the drivers in a source tarball, (packages ending in .gz or .tgz, bz bz2 etc.) the RPM is the only thing you've got. I would send Telewell an e-mail and tell them your situation, and ask for a solution. If they are supporting their product under Linux, then they *should* certainly know their product now needs to run on Fedora as well if they don't already. -
Redhat runs a "generic" player, that is actually XMMS. All he'll need to do to run Mp3 is to install the mp3 plugin.
-
Are you using Xmms? If so, you have to install the Xmms mp3 plugin.

The directions on that site look pretty easy to understand. If you need help though, check back.. -
I'm not sure about your last question, but after installing Win4Lin, you then install Windows right onto your Linux just as you would any other app. You then have an icon on your desktop that when you click, it simulates the Windows boot up, (only much faster) and you have a complete Windows OS from which to use that looks, appears, and for the most part, works just as you are used to seeing it. I've yet to find apps it wouldn't install and run, except games. Presently there is no active X support. That's really the only drawback. Once you install your Windows programs, it uses it's files and .dlls just as under Windows. The Windows OS itself is running from Linux which in turn makes it possible for you to run your apps from the Windows OS.

FEDORA and Dell c800 GUI display "not"
Dapper Dan replied to spanish_diamond's topic in Linux Hardware
You know, I'm not sure what Fedora is calling these utilities now, but under rehat 8 and 9 you would run as root: redhat-config-xfree86 to configure X. See if that works. If not, maybe a Fedora user can tell us what the command is to configure X. -

I tried to look at theTelewell site and could not locate a page for anything other than Windows and Mac drivers. Are there "source" packages or rpms on the driver page? Can you give us a link to the page where you found the .zip file? After looking at this page, and, if I'm understanding correctly, these folks make drivers that will work with your Telewell as shown on this page. Read through this site yourself though.. -
Win4Lin is really sort of an interface between your Windows OS running on top of a Linux foundation. When I was running Windows 98 natively, I got many crashes weekly if not daily. With Windows 98 on top Of Linux, it seldom crashes and Windows programs are very stable. I would not advocate going out and buying Windows 98 to run with Win4Lin, but if you are like me in that 98 (type windows) was the last OS you used before moving over, you can put it to use with Win4Lin. After all, you already paid for it.

I would try to steer you in a different direction, but it looks as though you've made up your mind. Good Luck. -

As root type: XFdrake [enter] and fool around with that. Look in the "monitor" section, and try to find what corrresponds with your laptop. Here's where you can get Mdk 9.0. ftp://mandrake.redbox.cz/Mandrake-old/iso -
Yeeehaaa! I just got my new 128 mb usb stick mounted and working! It's a Lexar JumpDrive I got on sale for 20 bucks at OfficeMax. I know this is probably not very interesting news for the rest of you, but I'm having a lot of fun with it, and just wanted to tell someone!

danleff, there has suddenly been a lot of discussion over on the Morphix boards about USB stick. Alextreme, (Morphix creator and Moderator) is now working to pull the necessary elements together to make it all work in a separate module. If I'm understanding correctly, a USB stick loaded with Morphix may be able to boot from grub/lilo, or first with a floppy rather than having to do it from bios! This is exciting news! Check it out... http://morphix.sourceforge.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=862&forum=3&jump=1

Quote: I loved 9.1 i guess until i find an answer to this problem I'll go with fedora, but sure would like to check out Mdk92 any suggestions? From what I saw, there was very little difference between 9.1 and 9.2, except 9.2 gave a little more trouble. I don't think you're missing much..

Yes! I just updated a bunch of packages with apt tonight on my wife's Toshiba Satellite which uses Morphix-Gnome 4.1.
