Best Drivers and Support for Graphics Card ????
Dapper Dan replied to darwinmartin's topic in Linux Hardware
Quote: I am looking for a card that would allow me to play games, watch dvds, and push out to a tv? Any help would be appreciated!! Hands down...Nvidia. -
You could install apt-get rpm to get those packages installed if all else fails. As an experiment I just downloaded and installed both on my RH 9 box in less than 2 minutes...
-
Since all use the Debian repositories, I would think any of them. I've worked with all three, and prefer them in this order: Morphix Knoppix Gnoppix This is a great way to get Debian on your box, if like me, you tried 5 times to install it without success..

Very simple. Oh, and congratulations on getting X windows up! How did you do it? You should be able to do what you want to do from the Mandrake Control Center. Look for the section called "software management." and install software. In the window type: "gaim" At any rate, you become root by opening a terminal and typing, su [enter] Another way to install gaim is, while you are root at a terminal, type: urpmi update [enter] then: urpmi gaim [enter] and follow the instructions..

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but just in case, did you set your bios to boot cdrom before your hard drive?
-
Admiral LSD, if you did that same stage 1 install with, say a 656 cable connection, what is your idea on how long it might have taken?
-
I was checking the portage trees and am very glad to see IceWM and very surprised to see Icecc, the IceWM configurator. I have high speed cable. When I start the install, how does it address partitioning. Say for instance, can I tell it to keep my /home? Does it ask and give options here? Sorry Traker Jon. I didn't mean to highjack your thread. I'll start a new one..

why we can't impliment scheduling algor. in form of module?

mishranavaneet, I wish I could help you with this, but it is beyond my area of knowledge, sorry.. -
Admiral LSD, I don't want you fall over backward in your chair or anything, but I downloaded the Gentoo cd (livecd-2.4.20-kde-gnome-distcc-07-15-2003.iso) and have been impressed by it. I also downloaded the "bare bones" (livecd-2.6_11-29-2003.iso) which I only tested as a recovery disk. I haven't had a look at the Gentoo website yet, but will today with the intention of testing it on my experimental box very soon. Any advice before I begin?

Mdk 9.1 and 9.2 are the reasons I changed to RH 9. Mdk 9.0 was a great release. Since Mdk 9.2 has come out, I read a few posts here and there about how much it is loved, But mostly I hear of problems that users are suddenly having with 9.2 that we weren't having with 9.0. In my opinion, Mdk 9.2 has a way to go before it is truely ready for prime time. I'm holding off on Fedora as well for similar reasons. I'll probably go with Fedora when I feel comfortable with it. Also with Fedora, you can use yum or apt-get rpm.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine who is the computer administrator at our local school district about fat 32 and ntfs and he agrees that fat 32 has caused him a lot of blue screens and lost data over the years. He far prefers ntfs as well. An interesting question came to my mind. I know Slackware makes a version that runs on fat 32. How does Linux fare under it? Is it the combination of Windows and fat 32 that can potentially cause such problems or just the file system itself? If just the file system, then even Linux could experience hard Windows like crashes on fat 32 as well couldn't it? Or not?

Maillion, I just saw where you had posted over at the Morphix forums. I guess you must have seen my name over there which is why you asked. I forgot to mention that I visit there too..

Quote: Dapper, They ask for email addresses and such. Are they trustworthy? I've had to change my email address 5 times in the last couple of years due to spam that resulted from this kind of 'membership' :x LOL! I regularly get between 15 and 60 junk e-mails a day! Netraverse is a good company. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think they would do that. Once you purchase it, (around $90.00), the Win4Lin install is actually so easy it's almost no fun!

On a sort-of-kind-of-related note, I'd just like to say that I've tried almost all of the Linux cd burner front ends and have burned from the command line, and in my opinion, K3b absolutely leaves the rest in the dust! I think it is the best cd burner FE out there period. It makes Nero look chaotic and difficult.

Quote: hey dammer.. i have to spell it XFdrake correct? That actually is what I've been wondering. I can't remember if it should be lower case, but it seems I remember it is XFdrake, with the caps. Is there any way to post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 here? If not, could you write down what is under the "Monitor" and "Screen" sections of your XF86Config-4? For reference, here's mine... Note, this is the name of the # file minus the extension (like ".txt" or ".db"). There is normally# no need to change the default.# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)# By default, Red Hat 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of# the X server to render fonts. Can't tell you which one to get as I've not made a choice myself. Have you checked the Comatability pages here? When I switched to Linux my Visioneer scanner instantly became a boat anchor.

Why am I wasting my time on this..? This is NUTS!!

Quote: Ok, I keep hearing about this app. My curiosity is piqued. I use Mandrake as my main Linux. (Red Hat will not install or run on my system!) Mandrake is Red Hat based. Will apt-get work with Mandrake 9.0? Maillion, there was a good repository for Mdk for apt-get, unfortunately it is my understanding that it is not being kept current. Apt is really no longer a viable package management solution for Mdk. Urpmi works really well though! Quote: I have downloaded the iso's for Fedora, but considering the results I have gotten with Red Hat (at least 10 install attempts, at least three different versions), I am kind of leery of it. Hmmm, I wonder what the problem could be? RH has always installed just fine for me. 7.3, 8.0, 9.0 and Fedora have all installed without problems for me. Quote: I am trying to learn shell scripting at the moment, and I need a working system to do so. vi is great isn't it?? Quote: Mandrake is working, and I am not fond of the idea of installing a host of new problems to figure out, but I'm curious, dammit! : I understand how frustrating that could be. What type errors were you getting, or what went wrong during your attempts to install RH? -
Which ever one will fit on it. Really though, I guess many of them should be fine. I really like Morphix, and if I had a stick big enough for it, that's what I'd use. There's "Damn Small Linux" which comes in under 50 mb, and "BBC Rescue", which is what I'm currently using. I really think we are going to see a lot of new distos that will be targeted specifically to usb reader/writer sticks. Flonix has already got one out, and I think others will soon follow. It seems to be "the thing!"

48 and you've got one 4? Man danleff, you started later than me! 8)

As root, run: XFdrake [enter] Try different resolutions and screen sizes. There is a place in the program under "monitor" that will allow you to choose your actual monitor.
-
Maillion, you could run your Windows 98 from Win4Lin from your Linux. It shouldn't have any problems running those programs. We use it at my radio station for a few Windows apps we need, and it runs them as well as under Windows alone and they are actually are more stable.

Quote: Dapper Dan, you didn't say how old you were! Getting off subject but I'm 46. I have a daughter 3 and a son who just turned 4 months. I decided to skip the father stage, marry a really young good looking woman, and go straight to the grandfather stage!

Maillion, don't tell me you're one of those *gulp* Emacs guys?!?!

FEDORA CORE 1 (kernel 2.4) & NFORCE2 CHIPSET
Dapper Dan replied to macawgumbo's topic in Linux Hardware
I'll try to re-create my post about how to install the nvidia drivers that I thought was inappropriate but then, as it turns out, was. I'm not knowledgeable enough about the others stuff to help though, sorry.
