Quote: That evening my daughter came home with a note from her school principal asking me to print 60 copies of each poster, which I did with a great amount of pride. None of my children were ever again too embarassed to ask questions. Mel, you sound like a very good father! I have a daughter who just turned 3 and is starting pre-school Monday. I will remember what you said!

FEDORA CORE 1 (kernel 2.4) & NFORCE2 CHIPSET
Dapper Dan replied to macawgumbo's topic in Linux Hardware
Should I say how to install the nvidia drivers now? -
LOL! danleff, you're a braver soul than I am! I'd be scared to death of Mandrake Cooker! Heck I'm scared to death of Fedora! It's gonna be a while before I upgrade to kernel 2.6 too! Maillion you're right about Mdk 9.1 and 9.2 giving trouble to a lot of new users. I used 9.0 for over a year and loved it. It's still a great version of Mandrake and I run it on two computers at work. I think 9.0 is the best Mdk for any new Linux user. 9.1 and 9.2 really disappointed me. I felt that both were a step down from 9.0.

FEDORA CORE 1 (kernel 2.4) & NFORCE2 CHIPSET

Now? -
Hmm. Then I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. I wonder if it's possible there is some sort of corruption on the disk itself that's causing it not to compile correctly. Anyone else?

The last time you tried the install, did it not ask or give you a opportunity to create a swap partition? Surely it did?! The 'buttons" may be different with RH 9.2, I can't remember, but there has to be something there offering a way to create a swap partition. -
Quote: My two newest computers came preloaded with "Spyware XP", LOL!! Mel, I've heard a lot of good things about Mepis and have been meaning to download it and have a look. Maybe this is a good excuse for me to. Those problems may be more specific to Mepis itself, in how their method is on setting such things up. I'll try to download Mepis sometime today though, and have a look at it..

Toshiba Iaptop Modem installation Problem on linux 9
Dapper Dan replied to xenoboy's topic in Linux Hardware
xenoboy, doing a quick search of your modem at Linmodems.org, I'm afraid it doesn't look good. Quoting from their website: "Lucent/Agere modem resources Manufacturer names of Lucent or Xircom may be displayed by the query "lspci -vv". These may be supported. The Lucent AMR modems are definitely not supported." Sorry. -
Neus, is on the right track. Actually though, it's: startx [enter] Or if you aren't getting the login manager, you could as root type: kdm [enter] And that should bring up the login manager. This problem you're having seems to be happening to a lot of folks who are trying to install Mdk 9.2. It happened to me too.
-
sopel39, I would just attempt another RH 9 install. Try again and see if you get the very same problem.

It's just "swap". After you've created your / partition, click on the remaining empty space and click on the green swap area up top, then make the size. See my other post about swap space size. The Mdk 9.2 install should at some point express it's desire that you create a swap space... other that swap, when it gives you the choice of what file system, do not choose ext2. Use ext3. -
That's why I said "similar to." The gui is a little different, and you can resize ntfs and fat32 partitions with MDK 9.1 and 9.2, but essentially the partitioning tool is the same. I'm not able to find a picture of 9.2 in action, but what you will wind up with is much like the picture of 8.1. (visually). Realistically, what you're trying to do is not easy to pull off the first time you try it. That's because you, (as I was) are completely unfamiliar with how the partitioning tool works. You can start the Mdk install and get to the point of partitioning to see what things are like. It took me several tries to get it right, and I had to reinstall Windows 98 a couple of times. That's why I say "..back up your files." If you start using the resizing and partitioning tool in Mdk, and you make a mistake, it will allow you to undo what has been done. Just take your time with it! Don't get in a rush, and make absolutely sure you know you've got things set up right before continuing.. Click on the Windows partition. Resize it to half your hd. Then click on the blank space you've created and make a / partition. Then click on the empty space left and make a swap, then click on the remaining space and make it /home. If I'm remembering correctly, your swap space should be 3 times the size of your ram. What you wind up with should visually look very similar to the picture I showed you...

Mdk has a very good partitioning tool that can create the Linux partitions from your Windows. Can you still boot Windows? Before doing anything, defrag and compress Windows before starting. Try the Mdk install again. Once you get into the Mdk install, follow the instructions in the partitioning carefully. If you see a blank space from your previous try, then you should be able to install Linux to it. If you don't, click on your Windows partition and click "resize." When dual booting, I always split the size of my HD in half. Eventually, you should wind up with something that looks similar to this... http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Demo/Mandrake8.1/Install/Expert/images/expertC1.png Be sure to use Ext3, (I personally prefer RieserFS) and create a / partition, a swap partition and a /home partition. In all cases... Make sure you back up all valuable Windows files to cd-r or cd-rw before attempting any partitioning!! -
I've used Gnome, KDE, Enlightenment, Fluxbox, Blackbox, XFCE, and a few others, and I always come back to IceWM. Ice Windows Maker is small, light, minimal, extremely fast, very friendly on resources, rock solidly dependable and highly configurable. I run it on 5 boxes between work and home.

I bought 2 Dells about a year and a half ago, and the onboard nic worked on both of them flawlessly. About 6 weeks ago, a friend of mine bought a new Dell and the onboard nic wouldn't work at all. We had to put a pci in. Pci nics are so cheap now, and almost all of them work with Linux. They can save a lot of head aches! -
Jedi Academy on Fedora core 1 "can't exec: 'jasp': erro
Dapper Dan replied to RuIoMaIoR's topic in Linux Games
Forgive me if I ask stupid questions about things you may already know but, are you "in" the directory which contains jasp.exe? You know about changing directories with the "cd" command right? skip the following if you understand about changing directories.. Quote: If not, you have to get into that directory, otherwise it won't work. It's kind of like asking someone in your home to do something. If you ask them from the room you are in, and they are down the hall in another room they can't do what you ask because they can't hear nor see you. So you have to go down the hall and into the room where they are so they can see and hear you asking them. Lets say jasp.exe is in the Jedi Acadamy file, which is in a "games" file which is in your /home directory. As an example, to get there you have to go: cd /games/Jedi\ Academy [enter] Once in, you then do: winex3 jasp.exe [enter] or to save time you could go: winex3 home/RuloMaloR/games/Jedi\ Academy/jasp.exe [enter] Again, forgive me if you already know about all this, but you said you were a Linux newbie, and I thought maybe I could save us some time if you didn't... -
