Red Hat, oops, I mean Fedora still sucks...
Dapper Dan replied to ReFoRMaT's topic in Everything Linux
I respect you as well ReFoRMaT, but I did read the whole thread, (and have enjoyed it) and didn't get that at all. It doesn't appear to me that Dylaar had the intention of doing anything other than trying to be helpful. Why don't we ask him about it? Dylaar, were you purposely trying to insult ReFoRMaT? -
If you're getting to XFdrake, all is not lost! What is the exact error message you are getting at the end of the boot process?

what's ur opinion on the future of GNU/Linux platform?
Dapper Dan replied to iamroot's topic in Linux Games
I think many of the game makers are beginning to take notice of the needs of Linux gamers, but we'll always be a secondary consideration unless Linux overtakes Windows in sales which is highly unlikely. There will always be "Microcentric" gaming companies who will never consider the needs of Linux users, like the makers of Halo and Valve. Interesting how Valve has the time to create Linux server software for all of their HL on-line shooters, but won't take the time to give us a retail Linux version. After all the toil and hardwork Linux servers have gone through over the years running their games, it seems only fitting we should get a Linux version of Half-Life. None will be forthcoming though. -

ReFoRMaT you can disagree with Dylaar or anyone else here all you want but please do it in a respectful way. There is nothing in Dylaar's post that warrants the inconsiderate way in which you responded. While at Linuxcompatible, please remember and practice the first rule of Net etiquette. -
My old TI 42000 GeForce 4 ran perfectly. This one is giving me fits! It says right on the box that it's Linux compatible, and it works perfectly with the "nv" drivers. Looks great. The problems begin when loading the "nvidia" 3d Accelerator drivers. In SuSE 9.1 and ProMepis Beta 5, I get the exact same problems which are... When booting into kdm, the Nvidia screen comes up and won't go away! You can see some of the kdm options on the Nvidia screen but it won't let me "log in" from this screen thus, I can't run my DE. When I do a Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a prompt in which to re-edit /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4), I get a screen full of cubic psychedelic colors. This situation will not change unless I put in the live CD and edit XF86Config that way as I can't see or get to it otherwise. I installed the accelerator drivers in SuSE 9.1 with Yast just like I did with my old TI 4200. In fact, I installed the Nvidia drivers on at least 3 separate occasions with Yast and they always worked perfectly. I've never had problems installing the Nvidia drivers with any other of the many distros I've ever used with the TI 4200. I also installed the correct packages, (GLX and the Nvidia kernel) with apt-get without problems in ProMepis. I haven't yet been able to locate anything on the net relating to this problem. Is this card not compatible with the Nvidia 3d drivers or am I just doing something wrong?

blackpage, you haven't heard about the 6.29 kernel?? Linus released it just about a month ago. He said the 2.*.* kernels were getting him down so he wanted to make a quatum leap. The new kernel so far will run my radio station and do all the bookwork, wash my cars and miraculously create food in my icebox out of thin air. But I swear, the damn thing won't run my GeForce MX 4000!!!

I thought that might grab some attention! Actually I've got three Linux distros on my box, and between that and the problems caused by Qtparted, (After initially partitioning with Partition Magic), my hard drive and grub are a mess. Anyway, I bought a Western Digital 120 GB external USB drive, formatted it with ReiserFS and have transferred all my /home files from the three OSs, (Gentoo, SuSE 9.1 and Mandrake 9.2) over to it. Since we've seen so many problems here with partitioning, especially when folks run XP along with FC, and also since I have licensed copies of 98SE and XP, and Partition Magic 8, I thought it might be a good choice to nuke and pave my drive, start over by installing Windows for the sole purpose of having access to Partition Magic which I would solely use to create new partitions as I go. I have to give credit where credit is due. Partition Magic is the best partitioning utility I've ever used, regardless of O.S. So that's the plan. My only problem at this point is I can't decide whether to use 98SE at the first part of my drive or XP. I'm leaning toward using 98SE since I can always boot it from floppy if I mess things up. In the long run though, XP would likely be more stable. I will gladly listen to any and all recommendations and suggestions. Thanks.

Welcome Zarni. Yep it is 6629. At least it is in ProMepis. I just updated the kernel to 6.2.9* from 6.2.7 hoping to build Nvidia with the newer kernel. I read on a Fedora Forum they were having the same trouble but upgraded kernels and the problem went away. I'll let you know how I come out... Thanks again.

Hi Matt and welcome! Funny you should mentionn Mandrake 8.2. I got Windows XP installed at hda1 and decided to try my very first distro, Mandrake 8.2 next. Trouble is It doesn't like my newer on board NIC, and I had problems with it after a necessary cold re-boot. I sure would like to get it on this box at some point though for old time sake. Right now, I have ProMepis as my 2nd OS and will install SuSE 9.1 as the third. I might have to resort to Mdk 9.0 which I know will work on this box. It would be neat to get Mdk 8.2 up and running though. It brings back a lot of sweet memories!

This started a couple of weeks ago intermittently, now it's hosed completely. X was working fine until I did a reboot. At the very beginning Dell splash screen, I get a series of flashing white vertical stripes that doesn't go away. I can't log in because all I have is a black screen with white vertical stripes I ssh'ed this box from another computer, which is where I'm posting from now, and forwarded X. The graphics are perfect on the client computer running the server's OS. I ran top and "X" is eating up CPU like it's going out of style! It's steady around 98 to 99% on the problem computer. Since it was running fine before I rebooted, and now is screwed up, I'm led to believe it's a temperature problem associated with the video card. Do y'all think I'm on the right track?
-
I think my video card got too hot and is hosed. I'm gonna buy a new one. Anyone have recommendations for the latest greatest hotshot Nvidia gaming card that will work without trouble?
-
As vhf said, run XFdrake and experiment. You'll want to choose a monitor and video card from the lists that are exactly yours or close to it. Try different resolutions and setting until one works. If you can't get configured with XFdrake you might have to configure your monitor "by hand." What is the make and model of your monitor and video card?

Hi Wicked. I've been tweaking my box so I've been in and out. Could you run: /sbin/ifconfig And post its output here? Thanks. Are you sure getting another wireless device is out of the question? There are plenty out there that would work flawlessly without all this hassle. The NetGear WA311 works great for me.

Coming to you from my RedHat 6.2 Packard Bell Legend 814CD box as I'm presently formatting the hard drive on my regular box with NTFS. Yep, you know what that means. I decided to go with XP. It's taking the install for danged EVER to format the drive in NTFS. I didn't really have to do the whole drive but decided, "what the hell." Thanks for everyones input. After the XP install, I'm gonna install Mandrake 9.0, my first true Linux love! Then my present squeeze, SuSE 9.1, and possibly the new lady i have my eyes on, ProMepis Beta 3. After that who knows...

This may not help but is worth trying. Go: /sbin/modprobe sis900 [enter] Any errors? If not, see if you can then run wlcardconfig. If you can, and can get configured, then go: /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up [enter] or: /sbin/ifconfig eth1 up [enter]

Installing Netgear WG311v2 with Ndiswrapper

I just lifted the hood and my Geforce4 Ti 4200 SE 128 MB DDR was hotter'n four hells! Yep, it was the fan. I got it spinning again and everything is back to normal. Can you change out fans on these things? How do you go about doing that?

You're welcome, but please stick around and post more! The more the merrier!

Hello All, I've got three Linux distros on my box, and between the problems caused by Qtparted, (After initially partitioning with Partition Magic in the very beginning), my hard drive and grub.conf are a mess. Anyway, I bought a Western Digital 120 GB external USB drive, formatted it with ReiserFS and have transferred all my /home directories from the three distros, (Gentoo, SuSE 9.1 and Mandrake 9.1) over to it. Since I still have licensed copies of XP, and Partition Magic 8, I thought it might be a good choice to nuke and pave my drive and start over by installing XP so as to have access to Partition Magic to create partitions as needed. (I have to give credit where credit is due. Partition Magic is the best partitioning utility I've ever used, regardless of O.S.) The problem is, I've never installed XP, so I need to ask what will probably be some really dumb questions: 1. Will a new XP install wipe my drive and format with NTFS automatically? 2. Will XP overwrite the MBR as 98SE does? 3. Will I have to have a working network connection to install? 4.Other than typing in the product key, will my newly installed XP contact Microsoft for some sort of substantiation procedure so I can use it? 5. Is there a way to make a boot floppy with XP in case something goes amiss? Questions 3 and 4 are important in that I have four XP install disks still new in the package that came with four different computers and I'm not sure which goes with which box. I wouldn't want to do anything against the licensing agreement. Thanks for taking the time to read, and any help will be appreciated.

I admire your resolve. The problem is since 98% of computer hardware users use Windows, the hardware manufacturers spend almost all their resources on them, and we are lucky if they even notice us. Some hardware makers refuse to acknowlesde us altogether. Luckily though that is beginning to change. The more we request support from them, the more they will take notice. When you ran lsusb and it listed your hardware, that doesn't mean that Linux already has a driver for it. It just means Linux sees it, and is letting you know that it knows it is there. Linux also recognizes hardware that will not work. Having said that, if we could find out the specific module for you dongle, we could then check to see if it is present on your system. Then it should be just a matter of doing modprobe. Do this... lsmod And post the output here. Maybe we will see something we recognize...

It probably isn't a problem with Epiphany. Have you tried Mozilla? Same problem? Are you recieving Email OK? Try pinging Google by their IP, I don't know what is is though...
-
That helps a great deal, thanks!
-
When this level of frustration sets in, (and believe me I've been there!) I think the best thing to do is send an email to their support and ask them what to do. Tell them it says right their on their site that it is supposed to run under Linux, and you need their help.

Ditto what Jmax3 said. We're running ProMepis Beta 3 on my wife's Toshiba Satellite laptop and it doesn't cost a thing. It impresses me almost as much as SuSE Pro does! When you have Mepis, you have Debian. -

I used Apt-get RPM from RH 8 all the way through FC2, and it always worked as well as Apt-get Debian for me. I'm sure they have the FC3 apt repositories up by now. Maybe the Nvidia modules are in some of those repositories.
