  1. I hope I put this in the right place. A friend recently purchased a Dell with Windows XP. It won't let her install the original driver for her HP Scanjet 4100C scanner (keeps saying not compatible with XP, and can't bypass). When I try to download the driver from HP, it says it's an upgrade only. When I try to install it, it errors out and says it can't. Does anyone know if this scanner is compatible and, if so, where I can get the driver? ?
  2. I looked on the Microsoft website for XP compatibility for this scanner, with no luck. I'm thinking since it isn't showing it isn't compatible? The scanner was originally used on a w98 PC. When trying to load the software, it said it couldn't be used with WXP. Tried to download from HP's website, but it was only upgrade only (which can't be done without loading the first one first). When we tried to use that one, error message said won't work and no other choices available. ?
  3. Question: If I have to reformat the hard drive, I have the W98SE CD and the owner of the PC has WXPHOME upgrade. I've never upgraded from W98SE to WXP. I've heard horror stories. ANy comments?? WOuld it make more sense just to get the actual WXPPRO CD and reformat that way instead of going from W98SE to XPHOME? The owner of the PC also has a cable modem. What do I need to do to reinstall that?? ANy comments? Helps?? prayers??? ;(

    reformatting XP Home machine

I forgot this part: back info: WXP Home (upgraded frm W98SE); Dell BRIO; with 966mHZ; 256 MB of RAM; and 37.2 GB hard drive.
  5. back info: WXP Home (upgraded frm W98SE); Dell BRIO; with 966mHZ; 256 MB of RAM; and 37.2 GB hard drive. I have to replace the A:\ before. I've replaced enough A:\ to do it almost in my sleep. However, this PC owner had problems with her A:\ for a while and was told if the A:\ was replaced, it would mess up the mother board. What's funny, is that the CDROm was changed with a CDROM Write instead. Don't know why the techie previous to me did this. Has anyone heard of this before? Why would the previous techie replace the CDROM instead of the A:\? It used to want to continuously format the hard drive. Now, it want can't even read anything in the drive. ;(
  6. setup: Windows XP on and HP BRIO BA310. 37.2 GB harddrive, 256K RAM; 966 MHz processor. The machine has MANY problems... Currently, I am trying to delete all mention of Gator software (from gainnetwork.net). It's all over the machine. I think I'm slowly getting it off. Spyhunter found it and ezula ALL over the registry and the c:\ ;( But I think the machine also has the Blaster virus (which variant unsure yet). AVG Free scan has been used and didn't find anything. ;( ANy recommendations besides fdisking and reformatting the hard drive. I'm going to use trenmicro and mcafee free software to see if they can find anything. I would need to look for a new floppy drive first before I can do fdisk and reformat.
  7. I found a third machine w/ adware. argh. However, I also found this site: http://www.spyban.net/. Has anyone heard of it?? Used it?? Does it work?
  8. ok, can anyone recommend a way to delete a dll file that does NOT want to delete (says acces is denied)? The Huntbar adware created a BTLINK folder. I can't delete it, even through DOS.
  9. Thanks for the URL. It looks like the hits are either for ME, or you need to use the W2K CD to get XP to work, plus manipulate regedit, which my friend isn't comfortable with on her new machine. I think she's probably just going to purchase a new one instead of try the latter choice.

I read the comments for http://www.windowsxp-drivers.com/drivers/61/61221.htm, and they said it didn't work, no go, etc.
