I have version 4.5.530.000 for ZoneAlarm (it's the free one). I have the main computer with the internet connection hooked-up to one other computer that is Windows 98 and they share an internet connection fine without the ZoneAlarm firewall. When I activate the firewall, however, the Windows 98 machine is unable to browse the internet, though I can send messages from the XP machine to the 98 one; this means then that there would be a problem with DNS, perhaps? ZoneAlarm automatically detects the network connection, IP address and subnet mask - and I can't alter it. I have set the trusted zone security on medium, even low, so that I am absolutely sure that the trusted zone is not blocked in anyway. I have also set the network connection to be on the trusted zone and the entry type is an adapter subnet (if that is right). Is there any way of getting the two computers to share a connection with ZoneAlarm working? EuriMouse

My internet connection sharing worked fine and for some strange reason, I have to close the host computer's firewall for the client's internet to work. I haven't touched any settings on both machines in question - so why has it done this? Any answers? EuriMouse

Has SP2 been released officially yet? EuriMouse

I've noticed recently, well, for a little while now, actually, that XP has began to hang quite frequently for no apparent reasons. Sometimes Windows hangs and restores itself within a couple of seconds/minutes; on other occasions, I have to restart the computer because it takes so long. I think it has something to do with the internet connection, since when Windows does hang, I can still open music files in Winamp but cannot open actual programs or use the internet connection to browse or open IE because if I do this, then computer then tends to show evidently that it is not responding by displayin the usual symptoms, ie. single windows showin through each other etc. It could also be that the CPU usage is at 100%, but this always seems to be the case for me when I press ctrl+alt+delete: I see the CPU usage at 100% for a second and then it drops to a normal level. So I don't know if it is actually 100% when I'm not viewing or if it is just 100% because I start Windows Task Manager. Any solutions? EuriMouse

I mean, I still havent switched to ethernet. Do I just plug in the ethernet cable and take out the USB connection; would I not need to configure it differently on the computer or will Windows recognise I have connected through eternet instead automatically? EuriMouse

So any replies? EuriMouse

Is this v5 of WU going to be releasing soon? EuriMouse

Yeah, I think I will wait! EuriMouse

How do I get SP2 for Xp? Mine is XP SP 1 and I have ran Windows Update but SP2 was not listed for download...? EuriMouse
-
So do I just plug the ethernet cable in? Do I need to configure it differntly or anything on the machine? Also, the computer I am having these hanging problems on is a host computer on a home network connected to one other machine... this one is XP and the other is 98 SE. Is this the problem, do you think? Are there any known discrepancies with XP being unstable when on a network or anything, especially when connected to a 98 SE machine? EuriMouse

28 processes running at this very moment. I have 256 MB of SD RAM, I think. I haven't defragmented for a little while - I'll try that and also try switching my modem to ethernet! Thanks guys; you're ace! EuriMouse

Hi Thanks for your reply. I cdon't think I have added, installed or radically changed anything on my PC since this behaviour has started happening. I have a USB Cable Modem, which I think might be the problem. After your explanation about the CPU usage, I'm adamant now that the system does not lag because of that (after surveying it for a good couple of hours!) Are there any known issues with USB Cable Modems with XP? EuriMouse

Hi guys! I was wondering if someone could help me solve a problem I have been experiencing for some time now. For those of you who have XP, you will know that ScanDisk has been renamed, for some strange reason, to disk error checking. You cannot run this check with the 'fix errors automatically' ticked while in XP, and the computer has to be restarted. I have noticed that my computer does not run the error check when I select it to start on a reboot. Could someone advise me on what to do? I'm completely stuck and Microsoft don't off any answers on their Knowledge Database; does this mean my problem is one-of-a-kind? Thanks in advance! EuriMouse

Yes, this has worked for me also. ZA is the problem here. I hope they fix it quick in their next update! EuriMouse

I also have ZA. I will delete it also and hope it works... but I would try reinstalling ZA! Thanks for the help; I'll keep you posted! EuriMouse

Yes, this is exactly the same problem I am receiving right now. My computer also seems to be loading slower too. There is an article about this on the Microsoft site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823439 But as you can see, it has been nearly a year since it was last reviewed and still no action has been taken. Perhaps if you could email them, as I did, and let the know about it. Afterall, the more requests they get for this problem, the more likely they will be of reviewing it again. EuriMouse

No one has anyother solutions? EuriMouse

There doesn't seem to be any such option on the TweakUI program. Would there be anything I should do? I can't believe Microsoft haven't even reviewed the problem; it's been nearly a year! EuriMouse

What's tweakUI? Please explain. EuriMouse

The drive isn't dirty. However, I know that when I first got my computer the chkdsk worked when I told it to on reboot, regardless of whether there were errors on it or not. I just thought that there must be something wrong with it if this is not the case anymore. EuriMouse

Sampson, this didn't seem to work. Any other suggestions either from yourself or anyone else? Microsoft seem to be aware of this problem since 2003, but they are very slow to add new technical articles on their database. If someone could help then it would be most appriciated. EuriMouse

I have noticed my Home Edition of Windows XP to hang on startup. I log in and it either hangs then, or hangs when the desktop has loaded and I then can't seem to load any programs. This is inconsistently the case, however. Any help? EuriMouse

No idea! EuriMouse

What is it that I'm looking for? What do you mean by unusual? EuriMouse

I've noticed this very funny problem with my CPU usage in Windows XP. I always keep hearing disk access noise in the background when no programs are open, even when the computer seems to be doing nothing at all. The noise sounds a little different from the actual access noise that you might expect to hear when accessing a program, for instance. A process called System Idle Process is always taking 99% CPU usage, and I notice that when I get Windows Task Manager up the CPU usage seem to get dropped in the performance tab, yet the noise is still heard and the System Idle Process is still at 99%. I also seem to have multiple process active under the processes tab; I have 30 processes currently running as I write this. I have tried Adaware, Spybot and AntiVirus scan but nothing is detected. What could you suggest, if anyone can...? EuriMouse
