I've just finished installing Fedora Core 1 (minimum install only) on an old 400MHz PC. My objective is to use this unit as a Linux Firewall and router for my office network to share the net. Because Fedora installed only the required componants to do this task, there is no graphic desktop or any other fancy stuff. I am very new to Linux but do have experiance in setting up Windows networks, my own including a W2K server (main data storage) and a laptop running XP - used for tested. My printer is also connected via a 10/100 ethernet running through a 7 way hub. I need help or at least pointing in the right direction with the following matters: 1. setting up the dial-up to call my ISP. 2. setting up IP numbers and default routing for the network. 3. setting the firewall rules. 4. getting the router working properly. As I said, the Linux code is completely new to me (took me 2 hours last night to get pass the host login), so all advice is welcome...

After several attempts, I have Mandrake 9.2 working on my laptop. However, while everything appears ok, I have no sound... Spec: Time Traveler AMD 1400 Twister Crystal Sound chipset S3 Savage graphics (ok) 40Gb HDD 312Mb Memory (32Mb shared graphics) I've tried going through the hardware set-up wizard but it doesn't find any sound chipsets. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Nah, no good... After rebooting, I tried launching Mozilla but the little hour glass turns around about 20 times then Mozilla closes..... What have I done....?

Panic over..... After reading another thread in this forum, i have descovered how to install the flashplayer..... (should of looked a bit better first... ;( ) It appears that flashplayer has installed ok, I am currently rebooting my laptop as I am typing (from a different system)...

HELP >> I've downloaded Flash player from Macomedia.com but now haven't a clue what to do next.... The file "install_flash_player_6_linux.tar.gz" was downloaded into the tmp folder of my login folder under home. If I double click on this it opens to a folder called "install_flash_player_6_linux" >> If I double click on this, it present me with 3 files... flashplayer_installer flashplayer_xpt libflashplayer_so I've tried clicking on these but I just get asked what to open with...? Where am I going wrong....?

I unpacked by following your instructions, tried following the instruction from the link above but it just said 'file already exists' - so I tried double clicking on the unpacked rpm from the home graphic view... it installed itself... Went to a web page that I knew had a JVM applet and whalaa...... IT WORKED... That's the first thing I have ever got to work after the initial install.... chuffed or what.... now then, let's try getting flash to work...

Hi, Dispite having Mandrake 9.2 working on my laptop for several months now, I still haven't sused out how to install stuff. I noticed when surfing the net via Mozilla, that Java and Flash things aren't working, so I downloaded "j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586-rpm.bin" from Java.com... How do I install this...? I have downloaded the plug-in to my tmp folder under my login under home.

I've been trying (unsuccesfully) to set up a hardware firewall/router/proxy - see this thread http://www.linuxcompatible.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1165 Since I am completely new to Linux, I haven't a clue... ;( I have the basics of Fedora Core 1 installed but no graphic desktop, so I'm sitting here staring at a flashing cursor and not a foggiest what to do next. Can someone please help me install a graphic desktop, I think this might make things a little easier. Please be gentle, this is a lot harder than I expected... :x

If I type 'startx' - I get > "-bash: startx: command not found" If I type 'gdm' - I get > "-bash: gdm: command not found" and I'm back to that flashing cursor again...

OK - I've discovered some basic stuff about the pppd program and how to launch it but I am not getting connected yet. Also, how do I create a 'script' file to run instead of having to type the code every time? Can someone please help?

Hi, I have just installed Fedora Core 1 on to a PC to be used as a firewall / router. All went well, hardware ok, install complete, system reboot. It's now asking me for a host login and password.... During the install, I don't recall being prompted for a login and password. I have also tried loads of different combinations of the possible login names and passwords I normally use. HELP...!

OK > I've checked a few other threads and tried typing "startx" but got bad command. This could be the crunch > when I installed, I selected "minimum install - ideal for firewall/router" > I guess this means I have no graphical desktop. The install is only on a 1.7Gb HDD, so not sure if enough space to install the extra...? Can anyone start guiding me through the process of setting up a firewall for my network please, pritty pritty please...

I'm trying to install Mandrake 9.2 on my laptop. I have already tried a CD bootable version of Knoppix and all seemed ok. However, when I'm installing Mandrake, I get to the 'Install system' section and about 1/3 of the way through, my system just hangs. No CD action, no HDD action, nothing. (mouse still works) What's going wrong...?

I've got an old PC which I concidering making into a Hardware Firewall running poss Mandrake 9.2 > The hardware spec is: CPU=233MHz AMD (socket 7) - I might have a 400MHz somewhere.. My question is what is the best possible way to set-up a network to go through this PC to access the net (full internet support)? My current network is: Desktop running win2000pro (used as server for file and data storage). Laptop running winXPhome / Mandrake 9.2 (used as test unit and mobile demonstrations) HP 10/100 network printer All connected via a 10/100 Ethernet HUB, pre set IP addresses for all. Current Internet access is via a software firewall protected software proxy server (on main desktop). If you need more info, please ask. Please keep in mind a low budget...

Sorry, the error was "no hdlist" It then request trying again but the same error arrives every time... HELP!

Ok, I have just tried installing Mandrake 9.2 onto the above mentioned system. I tried installing over the top of the exhisting win98 install. Deleted the partition and created a new / mounted on hda (2G) and then the 2nd HDD was split into /usr and a swap disc (2G again). after formating the drives hda & hdb > it gives the error no hdlabel What have I done wrong?

Cheers mksoccer, I might go for that, could I configure this unit to handle mail too. That is > could this unit that will connect to the net, be configured to send and retrieve emails and then my network PC's snd/rcv from the server? I am also concidering another unit (prob a 1.4GHz) to be used as the main data server for the network, is Linux a good choice for this too. Some terminals will have to be running a windows platform due to compatibility with my clients.

A freind of mine tried using the Mandrake disk manager and came to a sticky end. I would suggest installing something like 'Partition Magic' under Windows and then dedicating and reformating a space on your HDD. Make this new partition FAT32. Make sure you then defragment your main drive(s) and back-up all important data before trying an install. Then when you install Mandrake > use this space to install the o/s. Good luck..

Being new to Linux, I didn't vote cos I haven't seen many different versions. However, I recently tried Knoppix on my Time Laptop and everything seamed to be working ok, even the modem.

Did you 'X' the box for games during install?
