Neus replied to emrah_gokmen's topic in Everything Linux
kde and gnome are seperate things, but as to version issue, i only really follow kde and dont know much bout gnome, but i guess you would probably need to find themes for your version or lower probably, or upgrade to the latest gnome. -

there is no "installer" for installing new systems, its called a boot disk. In other words, when you stick it in your computer and restart it will auto detect the cd and load up the installation. First you must make sure you have your BIOS configured to have your CD drive to boot before you hard drive. How to change BIOS: when your computer is turning on, it will flash a screen before it starts loading windows (commonly it will be the name of your computer brand, for instance, mine says "Compaq") now most common key to enter bios is the F10 key, press it when that screen is up and it will take you in. now just find the boot order and change it so the cd rom boots before your hard drive. now your cd will boot before the hard drive, allowing your installation of linux. have fun also i suggest you read this first http://www.novell.com/documentation/suse91/pdfdoc/instguide-screen/instguide-screen.pdf and perhaps print it out incase you run into any snags during instal (its 86 pages though, if you dont wanna do that, i suggest you have another computer nearby you can access the internet on while installing so you can check it) also you said you bought it? it might come with the install guide in there too, check, read, belive me, linux is not something you can just install without reading many guides of how to do it all.

wait so is xp and mandrakelinux both installed currently? like an older version of mandrake already on there? i ran a google search on your error(WARNING: Some drives don't like fixation in dummy mode), and it seems to be something linux cd burner program based.. did you try burning while under windows (with a windows version of nero or roxio) or only under your current version of mandrake (if that is what your using) otherwise, get a friend to download n burn for ya, or wait again for the smarter to arrive

I would try a new package of cds, or are you sure your burner is working properly? try burning a simple music cd or something and making sure it works btw, cd1 is on the 700mb marker if im remebering correctly (cd2 and 3 right behind it) could be the cd's dont have enough space on them... if that doesnt work... wait for the smarter people to arrive

it would help if we knew what you would like to do with your system.. such as c++ programing, web server kinda junk, gaming system, etc

i downloaded the i586 rpm, and got the following error when i opened the rpm.. Quote: Some package requested cannot be installed: amaya-8.1a-2mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied librdf.so.0) Do you agree? shoudl i download the src version instead of the i586... i thought i586 was for pentium computers, which mine is... shouldnt that rpm work?? and its an rpm for mandrake supposedly.. :x ;(

i think u mean cd instead of ce... anyways, i dont belive mandrake cd is free, if you want the cd's you must purchase them... but if you want it free just download and burn the iso's (sure its a pain waiting so long.. but its free!!)
