Newbie wants a near Mac OSX experience..pls help...
Neus replied to emrah_gokmen's topic in Everything Linux
kde and gnome are seperate things, but as to version issue, i only really follow kde and dont know much bout gnome, but i guess you would probably need to find themes for your version or lower probably, or upgrade to the latest gnome. -

there is no "installer" for installing new systems, its called a boot disk. In other words, when you stick it in your computer and restart it will auto detect the cd and load up the installation. First you must make sure you have your BIOS configured to have your CD drive to boot before you hard drive. How to change BIOS: when your computer is turning on, it will flash a screen before it starts loading windows (commonly it will be the name of your computer brand, for instance, mine says "Compaq") now most common key to enter bios is the F10 key, press it when that screen is up and it will take you in. now just find the boot order and change it so the cd rom boots before your hard drive. now your cd will boot before the hard drive, allowing your installation of linux. have fun also i suggest you read this first http://www.novell.com/documentation/suse91/pdfdoc/instguide-screen/instguide-screen.pdf and perhaps print it out incase you run into any snags during instal (its 86 pages though, if you dont wanna do that, i suggest you have another computer nearby you can access the internet on while installing so you can check it) also you said you bought it? it might come with the install guide in there too, check, read, belive me, linux is not something you can just install without reading many guides of how to do it all.

wait so is xp and mandrakelinux both installed currently? like an older version of mandrake already on there? i ran a google search on your error(WARNING: Some drives don't like fixation in dummy mode), and it seems to be something linux cd burner program based.. did you try burning while under windows (with a windows version of nero or roxio) or only under your current version of mandrake (if that is what your using) otherwise, get a friend to download n burn for ya, or wait again for the smarter to arrive

I would try a new package of cds, or are you sure your burner is working properly? try burning a simple music cd or something and making sure it works btw, cd1 is on the 700mb marker if im remebering correctly (cd2 and 3 right behind it) could be the cd's dont have enough space on them... if that doesnt work... wait for the smarter people to arrive

i downloaded the i586 rpm, and got the following error when i opened the rpm.. Quote: Some package requested cannot be installed: amaya-8.1a-2mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied librdf.so.0) Do you agree? shoudl i download the src version instead of the i586... i thought i586 was for pentium computers, which mine is... shouldnt that rpm work?? and its an rpm for mandrake supposedly.. :x ;(

im a gammer, and sure my desktop that i use for my gamming needs, but sometimes i cant get on the desktop cause other family members are on it (its a windows 2000), and so i would play games on my laptop (when it was still windows) which is now currently mandrake 9.2... now i know mandrake 8.1 gaming edition is great if you also want to play a few games cause it comes with transgaming winex or something right? also ive heard of gentoo a bit... is there a more current good gaming system?? like does mandrake 10 support games that well?? also those wine and winex programs confuse me a bit of how they work.. i mightve installed mine wrong on my mandrake 9.2 (i used the rpm on the cd... but i got all confused...) so any suggestions for a good distro to switch to and which version for gaming? just minor gaming.. mostly i would just like support to games like baldur's gate series n stuff that doesnt require that good of a graphics card (its pretty low on my laptop)

how do you know that librdf.so.0 = libredland0???? cause i never quite got the whole thing like that.... nyways, its not on the cds... sooo nyways ill try out that download...

it would help if we knew what you would like to do with your system.. such as c++ programing, web server kinda junk, gaming system, etc
-
i think u mean cd instead of ce... anyways, i dont belive mandrake cd is free, if you want the cd's you must purchase them... but if you want it free just download and burn the iso's (sure its a pain waiting so long.. but its free!!)

avoid mandrake 9.2... it was my first stab at linux... and it gave me a major pain and somehting like 3 sleepless nights to pull it up and running... also i met problems when installing the plugins for mozilla... and any other browser at that... they just didnt work until u tried like every different way... but ever since then ive loved linux... it may have been a pain, but in a way i learned alot about linux through it cause you meet so many errors that you have to go around and you can learn your way around the konsole, and how some commands work, etc... so through errors you learn

so its just kinda throw the cd in, set ur bios and ur set? few questions i have is, can i play the games i own, like baldurs gate with it? or do i have to load up games on that cd only... also can i take that cd out and put in another cd.. and if u can only play the games on the cd, can i find a list of the games offered on it?

ive been reading through forums and one problem i saw a few times was the fdisk didnt work properly or something and they lost their windows xp and stuff... mightve just been their fault, but ya never know...
