Hi danleff, Yep, I have Konqueror and the e-mail program is Kmail. I only installed the KDE environment so there is no other browser or mail program. I originally installed both KDE and GNOME but found switching between the two a bit pointless (just an opinion as a new user, maybe I'll explore it as I become more confident with Linux). In the wizard, as you mentioned, there is a status heading. When the wizard starts it try's to connect and after a few seconds it tells me that the connection failed. I wanted to attach screen shots here of my internet connection wizard but I can't work out how to attach them here.

Thanks for the response. The software is K3B as you correctly assumed and the boot up is LILO. Just as a matter of interest - what is the difference between LILO and Grub? I went with LILO because that was the default. I installed Fedora Core 1 on an older machine just for experimenting with a different distro - the default on that was Grub.

I've got a Logitec Zoom webcam connected via a USB and am running Mandrake 9.2. If I plug the webcam in, the whole computer just hangs - everything freezes. When I unplug it, the computer remains frozen and I have to reboot without the webcam. I've got a dual boot between Windows XP and Mandrake 9.2. Under Windows, I can use my CD Writer under Windows using Nero 5.5 without any problem but I just tried using it for the first time with Mandrake and got the error message below. My writer is an Acer 1610A 16x10x40 I've only been using Linux a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this. I don't know how to do the recommended solution ;( Thanks. Did you burn the iso files as a CD image? This is different procedure from burning other file types.

I've got Windows XP and Mandrake 9.2 as a dual boot with no problem. I had Windows XP already installed. I used PartitionMagic software to create free unallocated unpartitioned space on my hard-drive (ie. my 40GB hard-drive with Windows became 35GB Windows and 5GB unallocated space). When I stuck in the Mandrake CD1 and booted (after setting up the computer BIOS to boot from the CD) Mandrake automatically detected the unallocated space on the hard-drive and installed itself without a hitch. Following the Automatic or Default Mandrake install options. Everytime I turn the machine on, I am presented with a screen which indicates that Mandrake will boot-up within 7 or 8 seconds - during that time you can highlight other options (eg Fail-safe mode) one of which will be Windows. Highlight it using the up / down arrow keys (this also stops the 8 second countdown) and hit the 'Enter' key. Windows will then boot up as normal. I downloaded my Mandrake 9.2 iso files from the same website and burned the CD's successfully using Nero 5.5 on Windows XP. I've also done Fedora Core 1 successfully. What you have to do is burn the CD as an image not just a normal straight burn. In Nero, you have to click on 'File' on the pull-down menu and click on 'Burn Image...' A browse file window will pop up. Highlight the iso file and click 'Open'. A Write CD window will then open - make sure the Write box is checked and the Finalize CD box is checked. Make sure the burn speed is around 4x (it's more reliable to burn at a slower speed) and burn away. You can download a free demo of Nero at www.nero.com Are you booting from a CD or floppy?

The computer was purchased as an Asus Terminator K7 Barebone System (basically a box with the motherboard, CDR and floppy) and an Asus installation CD. The motherboard has LAN card, 56K Dial-up modem (which I don't use having broadband), graphics card and sound card all integrated together. The vendor lets the customer choose the other components. In my case I have an AMD AthlonXP 1400 processor, 256MB RAM, 40GB Hard Disk, Acer CRW 1610A 16x10x40 CDRW and Maxell 48x CDROM. The vendor installed it all for me together with the original Windows XP OS. I've had it for two years without any problems whatsoever. I installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 a couple of weeks ago on a 5.3GB partition as a dual boot with Windows XP. Both OS's work fine except for the internet connection on Mandrake which I just can't figure out. Windows connects to the internet with no problem at all (it's what I'm using while typing this) so I know it's not a hardware problem. ;( Thanks.

Thanks for your response, danleff. Sorry, forgive my ignorance - what's an NIC?? I know the internet connection is not via any USB socket. The Realtek LAN card is built into the motherboard (Asus). The external broadband modem is an NEC ATU-R110 supplied free-of-charge by the ISP (who don't support Linux users - I called them and asked). It is connected by cable from the phone socket and to the computer via the network socket (which looks like a phone socket). Should I leave the DHCP Client box empty. If not, what do I fill in there? I've set up Mandrake 9.2 Download Version on my PC but I can't seem to connect to the internet (broadband). I am pretty sure it is an error on my part filling in incorrect information in the internet configuration (I can connect on my Windows XP machine using the same broadband modem). Netmask Boot Protocol (I am given a choice of DHCP - this is the default, static or bootp) Started on Boot Y/N DHCP Client The problem I'm having is that I don't know what the Netmask, Boot protocol, DHCP Client, DNS Server, Gateway, Host name and Zeroconf host name are so I literally don't know what to type in.
