outstream replied to matttah's topic in Linux Software
I have downloaded and installed Mozilla Firebird some 10 days back and its working cool, atleast i am happy with it. -
Hi all Dapper Dan, sir i just tried it with my Galeon, its working. i am sure u have tried it also by 'typing' in the address in adress bar, if not then try that may be that helps. the settings to that folder is set to *public* so any one can access that. and yeah, thanks all

hi all guys i am facing a weird and annoying problem in my computer. the problem is that while running, it reboots itself automatically. like i am on net browsing around or even if i am not on net, i am just USING it, playing some game or doing some work, suddenly it reboots itself automatically. first i thought its some operating system problem. but i have user password set on my bios, so it doesnt boots up until i give the password. according to my knowledge, operating system doesnt loads up until i give password. so i started my computer and this password box comes up before loading operating system. i didnt give password and i waited and suddenly it rebooted itself. weird. when i FORCE it to run, i.e when i constantly try to make it work after it reboots itself, i hear some scary kinda noise comming up from my CPU. i am not sure if it comes from my hard disk or motherboard or whatever. then i turn it off and wait for like an hour or so and then turn it on, it works ok. as now before writing this post i waited for about 40 mins and turned it on and now its working ok(so far). i have windows98, windows2000 and Red Hat Linux 9, installed on my computer. computer specifications are intel® celeron 1.1ghz processor Azza motherboard (which sucks, i got it anyways cuz i had limited funds) 128mb ram 40gb hdd sony cd-rom IBM ps/2 keyboard A4tech ps/2 mouse (2 button) Gateway2000 17 inch monitor Lucent v.92 dual chipset hardware modem Aikptek webcam pixelview pro tv card. Can any one suggest any solution to my problem? Thanks for your precious time. Good Day

Hi all I want to install TV / Vedio Card of PixelVeiw on RedHat Linux 9.0 . Device = PixelVeiw play Tv pro Model = PV - BT878P PV - BT878P + w/FM I searched web on this and i got some ideas from some websites. let me tell u what did i do. first of all i did lspci to check it Code: [root@localhost root]# lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8601 [Apollo ProMedia] (rev 05) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8601 [Apollo ProMedia AGP] 00:07.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. As it stated "Compatibles" so i thought to carry on with installation process. ok then i edited /etc/modules.conf and put it in the lines taken by some site that i found while searching, the lines are Code: # i2c alias char-major-89 i2c-dev options i2c-core i2c_debug=1 options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1 # bttv alias char-major-81 videodev alias char-major-81-0 bttv options bttv card=37 pll=1 radio=0 options tuner type=5 debug=1 pal=b After that i Ran the following commands Code: [root@localhost root]# depmod -a [root@localhost root]# modprobe bttv they went fine. then comes the turn of dmesg, it showed a long output, i`m showing the one with tv card thingy Code: i2c-algo-bit.o: i2c bit algorithm module bttv: driver version 0.7.96 loaded bttv: using 4 buffers with 2080k (8320k total) for capture bttv Host bridge is VIA Technologies, Inc. I went to option like thing in xawtv and in source i had two options "input" and "capture". capture was selected by default, when i tried to select "input" as source it didnt work. it was like "faded" out. i could only select "capture" and on capture it was showing web cam no tv. i plugged off my web cam and again ran xawtv and i got the following output. Code: [root@localhost root]# xawtv This is xawtv-3.81, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.20-8) can't open /dev/video0: No such device v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device v4l: open /dev/video0: No such device no video grabber device available [root@localhost root]# thats the problem that i`m getting now anybody got any ideas?

Quote: Wow! That was bulls eye outstream Never that that was so easy. All the tips I got from the net were so confusing. This one was just three steps. Cool. Thank you Quote: Thanks also to Vermyn for the NTFS tip. would be helpful sometime Yeah, i forgot to mention that NTFS thing. Thanks to Vermyn, he made life easier for people having NTFS partitions

hi all I encountered some problem when i tried to install my modem in newly comiled kernel. (i.e kernel 2.6.1) the error messages i got while i was compiling sources for my modem is: Code: To begin compilation of lt_modem.o and lt_serial.o, Enter make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. Checking for driver products: Compilation of lt_modem.o failed, as expected from absence of modversions.hRead Compile_properly.txt from DOCs/. If you cannot solve the problem, send BLDrecord.txt to: discuss@linmodems.org these were the last few lines i got when i was trying to install my modem. during installation in earlier steps it told me that modversions.h is not found cuz i didnt enable it in "Loadable Kernel Modules" option while compiling kernel. i recompiled it again and there was no such option in "Loadable Kernel Modules". Everything in "Loadable Kernel Modules" is enabled. only "Force Unloading Modules" is disabled there. but it still didnt work after recompiling kernel again. so i went to my default kernel directory i.e /usr/src/linux-2.4 and from there i copied "modversions.h" file to newly compiled kernel directory i.e /usr/src/linux-2.6, but it still didnt work. so right now i`m using my old default kernel of Red Hat9 to connect to internet. modem is installed successfully there. any ideas whats going on down here? :x

hello Quote: Did you install the module-init-tools package before compiling the kernel? This is a common gotcha in 2.6.0. The 2.4.X kernels use the package modutils and 2.6.0 uses module-init-tools. Also, take a look at; http://www.linux-sxs.org/upgrading/migration26.html Thanks for reply. I downloaded and installed both "modutils-2.4.25-10.i386.rpm" and "modutils-devel-2.4.25-10.i386.rpm" using my old kernel, as mentioned in the link you gave me. but that "modeversions.h" problem is still there.

can u boot into ur linux? if yes then boot into it and open a hardware browser, it`ll show all the hard drive partitions

Quote: I have a customized 2.6 kernel and now have a 40 second boot time compared to my 3 minute boot time with the 2.4-default kernel. i just compiled 2.6.1 kernel from sources and after booting woah..i really "feel" the speed 8)

Quote: everytime i restart the computer, i get back to the logon screen and the mouse goes ape-shit, i unplug it and plug it back in, it works fine....well, almost...the scroll wheel doesn't well i havent ever setup a mouse with scroll wheel. so okay its like ur mouse has one left button, one right button and a scroll wheel in middle. do u remember when u installed linux did u select a 2 button mouse or a 3 button mouse? i`m not sure but i`m very much doubtful that the mouse ur using is a 3 button mouse. and yeah try the advice of Maillion for setting up the fonts in ur mozilla.
-
well i think to get NTFS mounted, u need the support provided in kernel and inorder to provide support for it in kernel, u have to recompile it.
-
try ctrl+alt+backspace...if i`m not wrong that`ll restart ur X-server. it`ll give u the login screen. on top upper left corner there is something written as "session" click that and from dropdown list select Gnome. put in the username and password and ur in.

Why am I wasting my time on this..? This is NUTS!!
outstream replied to allen.panther's topic in Linux Software
yeah thanks for correcting me Dapper Dan, it is /etc/X11/XF86Config. heheeh well may be u`ll think i`m crazy or a stupid chap if i tell u when i installed my red hat for first time, it was working fine but still i went on screwing things up myself and edited my xf86.conf just to see what happens if i do that and i changed the horizontal and vertical frequencies there and i ended up with having a display area in half of my screen and half outside it -
okay, may be ur right. i havent used mandrake so i dont know what it actually does, but alright if u tell me it does it automatically, i believe u. but u can also make ur red hat distro to do the same thing. just edit /etc/fstab and u can make it mount all the windows partitions automatically on start up/boot time. i think i shuld post the procedure in another thread with name "automatically mount windows partitions in red hat" , so that some new person can get the idea about the post from name.

newbie ?, can you run aol on linux 9.1...if so how?
outstream replied to professormike48's topic in Linux Software
Quote: is it possible to run aol on linux and how would you go about it? well i dont know is there any version for linux for AOL (i dont use it anyways), but if there is none, u can still use it through any third party IM service. Install Gaim. Gaim provides u the facility to connect throught msn, yahoo, aol(i think),icq etc. the appearence and the RESPONCE of Gaim may not be the same as u experienced it on AOL at windows, but still Gaim will connect u to AOL servers and will allow u to talk around with ur friends. u may download Gaim from www.sourceforge.net -

Quote: I'm pretty sure it had to do with my SiS 300 video card - nothing seemed to come up with video did u try searching ur video card vendor`s site for drivers of linux about that particular model? also do u still have the manual of ur monitor? cuz some times Red Hat needs u to put in exact horizontal and vertical frequencies of ur monitor, if it doesnt works with general figures that Red Hat offers. if u dont have that manual, just go to ur monitor vendor`s site and check out the technical specifications of ur monitor. save em . Red Hat keeps those things in /etc/xf86.conf (if i`m not wrong), go there and edit the file, it shuld work -
c`mmon guys what r u talking about? the support for mounting NTFS partition in red hat 9 is AVAILABLE. i have just upgraded myself to new 2.6.1 kernel release. i didnt check details in that, but earlier when i upgraded my self to 2.4.22 stable kernel, i read it there that NTFS support is available, but u cannot read+write from ur linux to NTFS partition. it is read only. u can copy the data from NTFS to ur linux, but u cant do the opposite. just try this mount -t ntfs /dev/hdc1 /mnt/cdrive this mounts NTFS partition (which is drive C:\ in example) to /mnt/cdrive directory in ur linux. i dont have NTFS partitions on my machine, but i`ve told same to lots of people and i`ve never got the complaint that, that command doesnt work.

that means ur lack of some dependencies, needed to install that browser. check the help file or install or readme or something like that, and see the list of dependencies there. install the dependencies first and then try to install that broswer. it`ll work hopefully

well actually, talking with reference to new technology, its really easy to differentiate one... mostly winmodems come for PCI slot. the little white slot in which u plug-in ur sound card, tv card etc (mostly sound cards also come built-in into motherboards now, but just to give an idea what PCI slot really is) i havent heard of anyone saying they have bought a NEW ISA hardware modem. so its more likely that u`ll get some second hand hardware modem. a hardware modem plugs into ISA slot. it is a rather bigger slot than PCI slot. mostly found in older motherboards. not very old OLD. just like ummm i guess 2 to3 years old. when i bought intel 440-bx/2 motherboard like 3 years back, it had ISA slot in it.another differentiation of a hardware modem is, it has its own data/signal processor on it. a big black circle thing u can easily see. thats y hardware modems are FASTER than PCI winmodems.A winmodem takes ur processor to process signals and data, thus ending up in slow speed while a hardware modem has its own built-in processor. forexample a 33.6k hardware modem works more efficiently and faster than 56k PCI winmodem. so if u want to buy a hardware modem. it`ll be cheap than a new winmodem. but be sure to check that u have ISA slot in ur motherboard and then ask the computer guy that u need ISA pnp hardware modem. i tried the one from US robotics and it was a ride to remember on internet.
-
Quote: Ya I just realized that it is a Winmodem so I guess I will have to go out and get another linux compatible modem well yeah, u shuld get a hardware modem or an external modem, both`ll do the job. if u r running out of money and dont feel like buying another modem, just try to search on net for ur current modem`s drivers for linux.if u find them and they work, its ok u can still pass some time online with same modem. incase if u have already planned to get another modem get an external one, if u think external modems are a bit expernsive, then get an ISA pnp hardware modem, that modem rocks believe me. but before u just actually go and buy it, first check in ur motherboard that u do have a free ISA slot available there. saying this cuz mostly new motherboards dont have ISA slots in em. good luck

wuld u first copy, then paste and then post what REALLY comes at the terminal screen when u try to install it?, that way we`ll get a better idea about the problem

Quote: I want to learn Linux, so I don't really need all the problems I have had in the past year or so. (Most have been due to installations.) Will you guys help me out? sure will Quote: I don't want to compile anything right now – maybe a year or two down the road, but not now get red hat 9, u have to compile just few things and that is according to ur requirements depending upon what u want ur computer to do for u, otherwise its not necessary. Quote: I need a fullly functional installation program sure red hat 9 gives that. Quote: I need at least graphic based programs, development programs, game programs, audio programs, CD programs, internet access programs, and lots of documentation u install red hat 9, u get graphical based development programs (software development, web development, then there is GIMP, a thing like adobe photoshop for images and graphics creation). u get graphical based audioprograms to run audio cds plus xmms, a thing like winamp for mp3 files. in internet access programs u get kppp to dialout then there r lots of internet browsers (i use mozilla firebird), programs for chat and etc. for documentation, www.google.com is always there incase if u dont find anything on linux documentation sites Quote: I also need some gui window managers (as many as possible so that I can check them out yep u get the windows managers to browse around ur data/hard drive. same as u get windows explorer in windows or when u double click my computer and get a window manager to browse around. Quote: What distro will have as much of the above? (It has to install correctly and create a dual boot system.) sure red hat 9 includes it all

i am running a third class system (at least i think its third class) its 128mb ram intel-celeron 1.1ghz processor with a third party Azza motherboard which sucks, frankly. but i m running red hat 9 with X-window system and all works fine for me.

Quote: I need to actually move a folder in linux to a different location. dcsnet, y dont u just mount ur windows drives into linux and then copy the linux folder into windows drive, wont that solve the problem?

hi all im an old windows user, but i started using linux like 4 months back. works fine for me. my little problem is that most of my time passes on mirc, using it from a long time. right now in linux i am using 'xchat' as an irc client, but im not satisfied with its appearence/gui. i am looking for some cool irc client in linux, which atleast looks a bit similar or the original mIRC in windows. if any body has experience some cool irc client in linux, please do share it with us all. Thanks!
