open up konqueror or your favorite browser and go to localhost:631(while cups is running of course). Daum

Just had to emerge with ppds flags on the hpijs drivers...then the config menu in cups works and it is very easy, much easier than the gentoo printing guide. Daum

I just redid my system..and before i had installed ati-drivers xine worked fine..i installed them, and they finally worked(glx gears at least says so) and well mplayer has video, but now xine only has sound and no video...what is happening? I'm guessing i will have to pass it a video driver from now on? I tried many but could not guess which..help? Daum

Depending on what scripts you want to run and what not, you can put it in your localstart I believe...but that may not be the most common or correct way, it's just one of my ways. Daum

Not bad, I wonder if it really just detects what distro you are using and throws it as the first one=p jk. Go go gentoo! Daum

I'm not completely familiar with the entire knoppix distro, but generally isn't it a live cd(aka, runs off cd, and memory, not installed). If you have installed it and you have infact DELETED the lines of what you dont' want mounted from /etc/fstab I dont' know what to tell you, except maybe there is an option to turn off auto detect in the knoppix boot up. Sorry can't be more of a help, but if it is the live cd version you are running, you cannot save changes I believe without making a floppy with the saved changes or writing it to disk(I think you can do that in knoppix, I believe I read of that somewhere). It would appear that your ip is being grabbed ok. Now what type of interent do you use? Make sure if you have some type that has to be logged into(DSL) that you have that set up in your router or on your comp. Try ping yahoo.com and if that works, then I'm going to say its your program you are trying to use to browse. Daum

Not sure exactly what you are asking but i'm gonna go off what I think you are. First, you don't have to delete all the partitons to install linux, you just need some root for the linux partition(s). As for once you get in linux, and lets say you do decide to delete your windwos partition for space, you will not have to reinstall all linux, you can just have that partition mounted as /storage (or whatever you want it called). I noticed you said your second hd is just games/music. Linux is not very good for gaming(at least in my opinion) since most games are made for the windows os. You might want to think about dual booting. This is where you can choose if you want to boot into linux or windows. That way you can always be in linux unless you are gaming in windows. There are linux games though, so maybe you can look into those if you really wanna get totally away from windows. Daum

Also check bios, I know for a while that some manufactures put a function that would lock the drives from being formated(or something similiar) to prevent mistakes. Not sure if yours, also check to make sure the correct drives are setup in the computer in the bios with the right selections, ie. Dell's new 8400 series if you buy the sata drives the factory default bios make it so when a cd boot it can't find the hard drive. The reason is because it comes default to ide( i believe that is what it was) and you ahve to swtich it to sata instead. Simple things, read over your bios make sure all is right. Of course do this after waht Danleff suggested. Daum

I am not sure exactly how mandrake works, and what bootloader but what you can do if you want to use lilo is this. Well first let me state what i think happened. I think it just didnt' installed the bootloader to the mbr=p Ok to do this, you will need a live cd of some sort...mount your / directory..or wherever you have lilo stored. make sure the /etc/lilo.conf is already created(I am guessing that mandrake does this already for the user) Then do lilo -M /dev/xxx The xxx is where you will place sda or hda or the name of your drive. This will install lilo to the mbr of your hard drive. Also if you use grub, i believe the command is something like, grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/xxx....I'd look up a little documentation on that if you wer eto do that. and i believe that .conf file is in /boot/grub/grub.conf. I'd do it for ya but i gotta getheading to school. If there is someone here that uses mandrake, which i'm sur ethere is, i'm positive they probably are more help than i. Daum

Been having some weird error. So let me give the whole background. I was at my comp, and it was going really slow and sluggish, so i thought,oh i'll just restart...well when i did i get all these errors: a bunch of numbers following a raw data: then like i\o error, sda sector 130240 and so on. So i salvaged the data off the hd, and reinstalled...worked fien, but when i'd boot it was like your kernel doesn't have the devfs compiled, and gentoo is a devfs system..so i added that into the kernel, and bam i get the exact same errors. I had to get up and running so i installed windows=(, works fine. The thing is i do'nt want to be stuck in windows, i hate it. Anyone know how to fix this problem? or have heard of it? EDIT! Before i added the devfs to the kernel, i could fully boot(well i was in a non-x environment, hadn't emerged that yet), but i had rebooted a few times before adding it to the kernel. Daum

Guy came, withing minutes he installed it..we sat aroudn talked for a while...they hire independent people to do it(or firms) as the dell techies. He was A+ certified, and also has like 76 dell certs. He said they are incredibly picky on who they let service their comps. He wasn't a linuxer, but i did get him to take a gentoo cd with him, he said he'd try it otu. Two thumbs up. Daum

removing a win xp partition and converting it over to ext2fs
matttah replied to iamroot's topic in Everything Linux
yup. just fdisk /dev/XXX...then type, d for delete, type which number the xp partition is. And bam its gone. Then do, type n, for new, type the partiton number, type w-this writes the new table, then do mk2fs /dev/xxxX to make it a ext2(I think that the command for ext2 drives. As long as you dont' delete your fc2 partition you will not lose info in doing this. Daum
