I've always had really good luck with dell. Although I am not sure how much I like their movement to india for low level support(only because the majority of the time, the conversation is like 10 times as long as needed due to them trying to understand the english), I have always had zero trouble getting parts. I even once got a free part 6 months outta warantee. Anyways, i'll give you a report of how the techie does. Daum

They have linux techs? The hard drive diag were via the mobo, not windows stuff. I was using the newest gentoo. Also, I already configured the bios to be set to the sata, the first day i had the computer I reformated it, so i needed to change that. They said that the failed diag test, was because the drive was messed up. I get a dell techie to come over on wednesday(same time woulda been if I had them ship the drive, but now i get to have someone install it...) Anyways, i'll be back up and running in linux by thursday is my guess. I have the gentoo install down to under about 5 hours if I don't install and x system. Oh, the guy seemed to know what i ment when i said I use linux, not windows. At first there was a studder, then he goes ok..you dual booting or what? I got a lot less questions this time than usual, didn't have to go through the whole by the book process, they have lots of faith in their hd diag test. Daum

sda being my main sata hard drive=p It might have got some damage? I was trying to use blender, and it was continually freezing the system requiring a incorrect shutdown(held the powerbutton). If so...i'll just give dell a ring a ling=p edit> whats weird is also when i type lilo to update/install it, it says warning /dev/sda is not on the first disk...never got that before i've staretd to have problems. errors: here is jsut some of them . they are just continously repeated.... Current sda: sense = 70 3 ASC=11 ASCQ=4 Raw sense data: 0x70 0x00 0x03 that repeats for a while..then end_reqeust: i/o error, dev sda, sector 161620687. ata1: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} ata1: error=0x40 {UncorrectableError} scsi-:ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lin 0, CDB: 0x28 00 09 a2 22 d0 00 00 006 00 then repeats. last edit! Good news i guess..the hd diagnostics said the drive was messed...so now waiting for dell to pick up the phone. Daum [Edited by matttah on 2004-11-29 22:35:47]

Problem with Mandrake 10.1 install and SATA drive
matttah replied to RyanC111's topic in Everything Linux
Depending on when you bought your dell, I know when I bought mine their factory settings in the bios are wrong. IT will cause the hd's not to be able to be used in installation. You have to set in the bios under device settings to auto or something. Sorry I can't remember the exact setting, but I had hte same problem. Daum -
Ok so I'm trying to do some 3d work now. I have xfree86 runnign with ati drivers. Now everything works fine. Except when I try to render the objects in a 3d view in blender(pushing letter d). The machine instantly freezes up and i get this. atkbd.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program, like XFree86, might be trying access hardware directly. Now how do i fix this? I really wanna be able to render in linux and not have to boot to windows for it. Daum

Now I havn't touched any of the fedoras in ages..but as I recall in their start menu under system they have something like make bootable disk..or something like that...also in the install you can make bootable disks so you dont' have to have the boot manager loaded....then to rid the grub, I believe what you can do, is go into windows and go to boot.ini setup and do check bootable paths(it doesn't consider/see linux as one) and it will kill the grub menu and just boot into the windows, I believe. Yessir there is!!! Alrighty! here is what ya gotta do. Make the directory where youw ant to have the drive mounted to...for me i have it /usb. now /usb has to be empty! Ok next nano(or your favorite editor) /etc/fstab. Do this then, I use sdb because i have one sata drive. /dev/sdb1 /usb auto noauto, user 0 0 you cna just type mount /usb and bam it mounts=) now you can probably switch it to be auto mounted by switching noauto to auto, but i am not completely sure. Then just save the fstab! and bam its all good! the users allows you to mount it as a non-root user, but the user must be int he users group=) Daum

Ok, i'm thinking grub is not your problem. grub is installed in the mbr. it is tiny. you havn't delted your linux yet what you can do is this fdisk /dev/hda(supposing you have ide drive and it is your first one). then type d and delete all the partitions restart with windows cd in install..and grub will disappear. I can get them each to run but can't have them both running at the same time. in kde atm i filter all audio through arts, thus allowing me to play multiple inputs at once. if i have xmms running then go to play mplayer, i get audio device busy or what have you. was wondering if there was a way to get this working without having to start an audio server in flux or what? Daum

For fluxbox and icewm(i havn't tried this yet, but going to assume something here) they both don't have sound servers. I like to be able to play music then watch a video clip at the same time or play music and play a game and have both music clips going. In kde, i have all the stuff filter through arts and what not. Now, for fluxbox is there someway to have the dual inputs and what not? I want to get away from the windows looking environment but I can't give up some things. Do I just have a sound server running in flux if iwant this to work or what? Daum

Post a picture of your desktops..i'm thinking about customizing/switching from kde...so if you have mods or not an obvious desktop... thanks...or if youknow some cool customizations for kde just leave those. thanks. Daum

Sorry about the spam of questions i've asked lately, i'm tuning my system now=) Ok i have cups installed and all...i have a psc 2110xi printer from hp...i've had it print before in linux(it just printed god awefully slow)...now it prints at a relatively normal speed, and i have cups 1.1.20 installed, and the new hp desktop driver running it, and it prints the color table on the test page perfect, but when i go to print from kde(anything from a picture in konqueror to a picture on a document in oo), the color is off. It has barely any color, and alsmot apperas that the image has faded for like 200 years. I have the dpi at 600...anyone know what is going on? i'm guessing i'm having some problem in kde, since the color wheel works but once trying to print it doesn't do the right colors...oh I tried it in gnome, exact same prob. Please help=) Thanks. Daum p.s. oh when it did print extremely slow back int he day(in fedora/slack) it had the right colors, but also back then cups configing was different you hand selected what drivers you wanted to use and what not...

WOOOT! IT WORKS! Well after i do a few commands..for some reason right now ih ave to do a killall -9 cupsd to end cups since /etc/init.d/cupsd stop isn't working. Anyone know why? Theni just have to do ptal-init setup then i can use xsane..anyone know a way that i can fix that cups prob, since right now it jsut always shows the !! since something goes wrong..maybe its how i start it? Daum

Got it working had to restart the system to cups retsrat..for some reason doing /etc/init.d/cupsd restart and stop/start just did two red !!..anyone know why? now the challenge of getting the scan part to work. Daum
-
what happens when you hit ctrl alt f1 or f2 or f3 and so on? Does it go back to bash prompt?? perhaps your x system is installed with incorrect drivers. Daum
-
whoa=p he has even the scanning part working...i have no idea how he did that i've spent soo loong...for the cups problem, the next cups when i do the set up of the printer, it doesn't give me the driver option instead it gives me http://img98.exs.cx/img98/1249/snapshot8.png those options..i liked it more hwne it let you select the drivers by hand. Am i doing something wrong in the setup? I select usb printer(shows my printer) then select hp..then get to that screen. Do i installed hpijs, and hpoj drivers do i somehow need to make them used by a hand? since they arn't showing on list? Daum
