Just as i thought i was getting a little bit better at linux...everything starts going wrong lol....so right nwo, i restarted my comp...and it seemed fine, well except it was taking a while to boot...now when i get to my loginscreen(in fedora) it doens' tload the login prompt, just kepts the mouse with a timer on it rotating....what have i done? any ideas how to fix it? I tried doing the ctrl alt backspace, and could log in, but the gui keeps poping up not allowing me to use even the non-gui...ick, help? tried rebooting, and even did the system integrity check.... update: been sitting watchign the spinning timer, and the screen went to screensaver then i moved it and it went back to the twirling timer... update!: I restarted to the older kernel, and did a reboot that way, when i restarted to fedora, it actually went to the proper start up screen(the one with the comp, and the fancy gui) but then when it went to the login in, it did the mouse again...and i just got to reboot in that kernel but still getting the twirling mouse after the intial fedora boot screen(the one where it starts up network etc etc)...help another update: i am in the non-gui logged in as root...how do you run programs and such in this...and is there sound and all? and graphics or do i need to get the gui working? Also is there anyway i can fix it now? got these errors when trying to open graphical progs, could not initialze any graphics driver tried the follwoing drivers x: Can't open display "(null)" fb: Cannot open /dev/fb0 also wheni try todo telinit 5 it just goes back to the same blue screen with mouse turning. great update! found out that the libxml2 was a big main file in the gui=p using up2date to try to install it...too bad it staleld halfway into the download lol bam fixed...used wget finally..and type the whole addreess, and now gui works perfectly..except i'm specitcal about up[censored] like the redhat icon is telling me. Anyone have a copy of a current one? ayo.freshrpms.net is my source list (well off their site is where my yum is up[censored] since i used synpatic and it uses hteir site atm) and i want to get back to the normal update list that comes with yum preinstalled on fedora..if anyone has it please post it=p edit: Anyone else having problem with up[censored] and the libxml2 update? Keep having errors with it, both with yum going to the ayo site, and the actually redhat update=\....its -fs for force delete? maybe i'll delete it and install new one? Daum

I'm trying to get alsa to work perfectly with my turtle beach santa cruz dsp sound card..right now i can get sound, but if i introduce another device to input sound(like a dvd and mp3 at same time) it breaks up and lags greatly, is this just linux or i havn't configed it right? I've tried to read the sites readme but it is diffuclty to follow. Daum

well the thing is, it works, the sounds and all..but i was wondering if its just my set up currently that it causes the comp to lag immensely when i have tw sounds at once...ie an internet explorer with sound and mp3 player... Daum

not sure what that is for, but if it is an iso, then that means you go to nero(or whatever you have to burn stuff) and do burn image and bam it will be done. then insert the cd and it should work....at least thast what you do for linux cds. Daum

i did that but then it almost always either completetly freezes the comp or it makes it go extremely slow....should i change my start up in it, not sure on what i want to have running and what not to...anyone have a link to what i do and do not want to always have running? Daum

I have two questions: Can you skip files after you've started to update?(like when i'm try to update my orig fedora, it has 159 update available, but mozilla sometimes can't find a server and it stop the entire yum update command, can i just push a button or somethign to just skip that file? ) Second, since yum did quit after downloading about 30-40 packages, after not being able to find an available server fot he mozilla update, is there a command to install the packages it did download but not installed due to the failure in the downloading of mozilla?(the files are in the /var/cache/yum/packages) Daum

Got my new dvd installed, and installing linux as i type this=p windows sucked having to be in it...anyone know any reason why my dvd drive was affecting the performance of my cd burner drive too? They both do feed into the same cable but still...i mean when i installed the new dvd drive dell sent, the cd burner started to work perfect again....any thoughts on why/ Daum

i like how i see many people have the transparent windows in terminal and such...is that via icevm or is it just a theme i can get most likely for gnome too? Daum

Anyone know if the two will go together well? Right now its not so hot with windows because the sound card is one of microns(they modify all their products somewhat to make them special) and windows xp doesn' thave a sound card driver that i can find for it, and both soundblaster/micron say its each others fault for not making an xp driver...i'm thinking about installing fedora on it...anyone suggest it or against it? im not at my linux box atm, but i know what you are talkingabout it shows the different versions of kernals installed correct? It will boot to your newest installed one if you don't change it..but you can also remove the other options i'm pretty sure from the boot menu via the boot configurator, itsunder either system preferences or tools....i havn't done much work with the boot menu but go under the boot config, and it will allow you to add/remove items from the boot menu, and you most likely will see the 2 kernals on the boot menu and be able to remove the older one. snipher is a nice sniffer, not at my house atm, so don't have webpage, not sure if there is a linux version of it, if not, i know download.com if you type in packet watcher has a few nice sniffers. Daum

but is there a way to change to the minidisk player for the burn? What is that burning prog you speak of? Daum
-
well i don't have a few things currently: a. a linux system, after i get my new dvd drive(hopefully it will work now) i will get linux back on my main box. b. the mini disk currently. c. the knowledge of what prog to use to burn? it is a sony one....one of the cheaper ones...what do you recommend for burning? When i had linux, i just used gnome toaster, and that worked well for me. Daum

currently i am using gnome, just cause it came as default with fedora...well i might try some others, installing desktops easy? oh and when i installed fedora, some of the apps were desktop specific, if i was to switch to icevm(can't see the post for the exact name) would they still work? Daum

i will have to check that out dapper....just a question...how did this thread get revived...happened to two of my threads lately, both which were one of my first threads i posted=p -
I got all of java working. At first, I am not sure what i was doing wrong but somehow i managed to bug the installed so it only installed net beans and not the java part of it=p....i only got it installed when i went back to read an file it said to run at the end, but that time it installed it all...but i've redone my system 2 times now and got it installed without error now easily...both are bin files so it is relatively easy for install...then use fedoranews.org's tutorial by thomas chung to install the plug in, it takes about 5 seconds. I do agree with ya dapper, they should just have it as a package at installed. Daum
