just use the -Uvh command and it should go well, i'm surpised you managed to install xine without those codecs, usually it won't install xine unless you ahve the libdvd codec, but the uvh command as i said should do fine, then just open xine and try again...if ya get error post back. Daum

New to linux, problems with initial boot: fedora
matttah replied to evildylan's topic in Everything Linux
ya you are giong to have to have the isos extracted from the images...it would be worth it to try to find a friend to burn them if you don't have a burner, it is gonna be a pain trying to install from the harddrive is my guess. Daum -
uh in regards to the fedora...just download it off redhat.com then just do update...i havn't had any probs with the newer version, but wasn't too picky in my linux, and never tried other distros. Daum

uh, not sure if this will work, but make sure you burn the iso's as images, then just mmake your cd drive as one of the first boot devices and it should auto read to the installer... Daum -
I tried to mount it, and nautalius always has erro,b ut it then puts the icon on my desktop, it reads it, but when i try to get the icon to go away via eject it says: Nautilus was unable to unmount the selected volume. So? Daum

There are a few basic ideas for ou for reference...one is there are a few websites that you should know..rpmfind.net and freshrpms.net both are good for red hat users....when you search on rpmfind just make sure oyu get the rpm file not src one...and the correct one for your system...in mine it is always highlighted...it would be called Red hat 9.0 under the sytem...also here are some basic commands...all in terminal su -makes you root rpm -i [file name] -makes it install rpm -Uvh [file name]- make it update yum check-update -checks up dates and list them for your system, use this instead of up2date yum update -updates all the available packages yum install -y [package name] -installs the packages with answering yse to all install questions the package name is obtained from the get update list i think that is some of the basics.....i'll work on getting a few post to a large tutorial of commands for you but atm not spending much time on web, on vacation at whistler. oh and fedoranews.org has some nice tutorials Daum

uh not sure if oyu mean you want tos ee if they are mounted...download xine and you can watch dvds, just make sure you change the path to the drive to be correct(i believe its /dev/cdrom(# if you have multi cd drives)...or its /mnt/cdrom(#). To check if you can mount them open a terminal and do mount /mnt/cdrom(#) and it should mount them and pop a disk up on your desktop showing the cd....you can use gnome toaster to burn some cds and such...just download the mpeg123 if you are going to be burning mp3 cds...you need that rpm file to burn those types....its not that ahrd t ofind... well, i can just give you a few pointers on things i learned, if mandrake is like fedora then some of these might help...chmod a+x make the file executable..if it is a bin, you may have to this to run some bin files for installation...to run programs you installed either a. try the run prompt first and type n the name, it may put it there...if that doesn't work try going into the folder and finding a file along the names of the program, then open that file in a terminal... thats some of the basic stuff... Daum

Ok, well, i can remote connect to another person...i need to get this up and running..the person is on SBC Yahoo! DSL and I set up a vnc server on her comp...it gave me two ips a 69 one and a 169 one(when you held the mouse of the icon)..the latter was what registered as her ip when i did winipcfg(the 169 one)...and when i tight the 169 ip into my remote desktop connection it immediatly says there is no vnc server at the location..when i do the 69 oen it just takes forever...soemone please leave me a read me or im me at matttah if you know hwo to get this working... oh and...she is not on a huge network, it goes from the yahoo's dsl box staright into her comp. also about how the icon will display the two ips..why is it doing this..on mine it is only showing the local ips. I am pretty new to linux...and while a lot of my probs have just been my own retardedness, Fedora treated me well, I havn't really tried any other distros though...go with dapper dan, he has helped me out before and claims he knows what linux is=p Advantages to linux... well there are many, i have yet to actualyl get my system to freeze, and i'm good at that...um more freedom...ii just started using it over the past month..so not too familiar...
