    multifunction printers and GNU/Linux

I've got a hp 2110xi psc printer/scaner/copier yada yada..and it works golden. i guess my only complaint is that whenever i want to use it as scanner i have to turn it off then back on(so it resets with the different driver)...but it works quite well and is no hassle setting up, takes about 5 minutes to set the entire thing up. Daum
  2. What do you mean by slow? As in it loads slow? Graphics are slow? If your graphics are slow you might have your x config'd wrong...if it is running very slow try running in a non graphical mode(you can kill x by hitting ctrl alt backspace). See if it runs slow there too. If it does most likely the way you are installing is correct. I am not too familiar with the distros you listed but any distro should be able to run pretty well at the command line in a non graphical mode. Daum
  3. I have a prog that runs in java(scottrader) and well the prob is the drop down boxes are all black(so i can't see the writing) but when i look at it via windwos and what not it appears fine..and i can't find anyway to change the color of the boxes in the prog itself, so what do i do? here is a ss of what i mean.http://img129.exs.cx/img129/1682/stock1sq.png Thanks. Removing Fedora Core3

It seems you are wanting to reinstall windows..to do that simply put the disk in, and do an install...delete the partitions that were created for linux after you select you want to install the windows..then installt he windows on the new free space....I'd suggest that you stay in linux for a little longer, it grows on you=) Daum

    Linux NOOB here!

Well when you install xp, just don't use up all your hard drive space when you create a partition, leave at least 5 gigs or so, depending on how much you plan to use linux and what you will store in it. Then once you partition the windows partition, you will make the linux partitions in the installation. Daum
  15. I am sure he is giong to use ntfs. But to answer your question you will have to use partition magic or some program that can resize the partition, and might i add that you should make a back up before you do anything because they can mess up your partition and what not. If you back things up you misewell just reinstall, get rid of that nasty spyware=) Then when you reinstall just create 1 15 gig (assuming the tnire hd is like 30 gig ) if you want it split in half for XP, then the other 15 for linux=0 Daum

    mounting windows drives

You can assing your hard drive to be mountable by different groups in the fstab...for example: /dev/hda5 /mnt/hda5 ext3 defaults, users 0 0 That line if added to your fstab will mount the /dev/hda5 drive automatically on boot up. It is configured for an ext3 system. It allows all "users" which is a group, to access the drive freely. (I am at school at the moment so not sure if that is perfect syntax, but should get yuo going!) Daum
  17. If you have room no your hard drive for the linux partitions it will create its own in the space you ahve allocated. If your windows is the entire hard drive(size wise) you will have to either delete it, or resize it. To resize it you will have to use a program like partition magic or something. Then once that is done, you can just install linux it, depending on your distro sometimes the partitioning is done automatically for you. In this case generally it will say do you want to remove all prior partitions on hd, or would you like us to partition the remaining space on your hard drive. Select the latter. Daum

need help w/ Gentoo linux 2004.3

Grats, i will admit the install on gentoo the first time is a bit daunting, but i have found it worth it...and i've now installed gentoo maybe 6 or so times on different machines, and i barely even use the install hand book..i have it odwn to a fine art and can get it installed rather quick. Hope you enjoy it. A suggestion: While I love gentoo, i for some reason have never liked their kernels. You might look sometime into kernel.org and do your own kernel. You can emerge something called developmentsources which will allow portage to know you have your own kernel and it will make a copy of the kernel source to work from. Daum

    getting hotmail with evolution mail

Now there is a way to beat that. There are programs that will access it..if you search for yahoofetch or ypops you should get the same idea for the hotmail..they usually have links on the webpage for the hotmail versions. They are not the best, i'd recommend you just switch to something like gmail or a pop email inbox that is free=) Daum

    wine rpm

I believe the command for rpms in a terminal is: rpm -uvh or -ivh depending on what it is you exactly want to do, but both will install it. If it says its missing a certain package go to rpmfind.net and type the name of the package, download it..and install it. What distro you on? Daum
