  1. Hello, I'm working with Mandrake 9.2. on the IceWM Window Manager. I've tried installing Mozilla from the Mandrake ISO discs. It shows up in the menu, but when I click it nothing happens. Well, the hard-disk starts working, but Mozilla won't start. Not with the browser, not with the newsclient. Not that it would make a difference I think, but it's the same when I work on KDE-desktop. Quote: I also think Mozilla-mail is very good. If you already have Mozilla installed, it may also be available on your box. To find out, go to a terminal and type: mozilla --mail [enter] If it doesn't come up, it should be fairly easy to install. I've tried that as well. Same thing, hard disk starts working, but mozilla won't start. And I'm sure installed the browser and the mail/news-client. Does anyone know what the problem might be ? Greetz, Maxwell Rain.

Install-problem with Mozilla on Mandrake 9.2.

As a normal user it didn't make any difference. A lot of noise, but no screen. As root it worked. The Mozilla browser opened without a problem. So now, I can work in Mozila by becoming root in the Konsole. But I just want it to work in my IcewM menu Any ideas on how to tackle this ?

    Uninstalling OpenOffice

I would like to Uninstall OpenOffice from my Mandrake 9.2. system. Currently using IceWM as window manager. I ran the setup file as local user, and was able to uninstall the local setup for Openoffice. But can't seem to uninstall it completely from my workstation. The Uninstall deletes OpenOffice in : /home/maxwell/OpenOfficexxx But in /opt/OpenOffice/ nothing happens. It won't uninstall there. I tried running the setup as root, but then the Konsole doesn't recognize "setup" as a command. On the OpenOffice site I can't find any information, and via google most searches come up with windows uninstall information. Anyone here with any experience in uninstalling OpenOffice ? Thank you.

Thanks, I was beginning to think the same

    Uninstalling OpenOffice

Yes, I looked there. but, euhm, well, I didn't find it (now that's not a new story is it). I used the search function as well. No luck. I did do an install with the tarball from OpenOffice.org, and not of the Mandrake discs. I didn't know it was on those discs. Damnit, These first linux steps are complicated. And I haven't even begun getting the sound working

    Installing IceWM

In Mandrake Control Manager, I've selected the iceWM packages, and it installed of the ISO-discs. Now, on the iceWM homepage, I've found this : Quote: First make sure that you choose the correct X startup script in your home directory. For most distributions the file $HOME/.xsession is honored by startx and X Display Managers like kdm. On RedHat, the $HOME/.Xclients may be used instead. In all cases, choose the one recommended by your distribution and make sure that there is no concurency between the X startup scripts. The recommended way to start is from $HOME/.xsession shell script (may be executable, must be on RedHat). Mine looks something like this: # run profile to set $PATH and other env vars correctly . $HOME/.bash_profile # setup touchpad and the external mouse xset m 7 2 xinput set-ptr-feedback 0 7 1.9 1 # run initial programs uxterm & # start icewm, and run xterm if it crashes (just to be safe) exec icewm-session || exec xterm -fg red The xterm on the last line is there simply to make sure that your X session doesn't crash if icewm does (should never happen). You can restart icewm from there or start some other window manager. The session will close if you close the xterm. I think I've located the IceWM-file by typing find /usr -iname "ice" It came with a lot of result, a lot of .html-files in usr/bin/shared and "icewm" and "icepref" located at usr/lib/menu/icewm and usr/lib/menu/icepref. I also found a 'directory' at : /usr/share/doc/icewm1.2.13 and /usr/share/doc/icewm-light-1.2.13/ Question is: What do I do next ?

    Installing IceWM

Wait, I think I got it ! Boot Options --> "No I don't want auto-login" --> rebooted et voila, login-screen. I should have seen this before, you stated it a couple of messages ago. I'm in 8) Thanks for all the help, you're a lifesaver

    Installing IceWM

Quote: type: su [enter] it will ask for password to become root. as root type: kdm [enter] if you have kdm installed, a box will come up which is the kde login manager. Right up to there I knew where we were heading. But... no login manager. It's just boots up again. ;( Is there anywhere where I can get to the login manager ? Is this an option I should activate somewhere ? Maybe some usefull information, I'm not sure. But I'm the only user in this computer. Root and Maxwell are the same. Well, there is only one normal user : "maxwell", and then of course there's root. Maybe this has something to do with the not appearing login manager ? 'Cause I would really like to look at IceWM and smoke it over btw: I really appreciate all the help you're giving me

    Installing IceWM

okay, it just changed here. I rebooted not using the "default graphical interface"-option (is that auto-login ?) username, password then "startx" KDE booted then I did Ctrl-Alt-Backspace And I'm now staring at a command line as a normal user. [maxwell@localhost maxwell]$ What do I need to do ?

    Installing IceWM

*cough* huh ? Well, I turn on the computer, and it starts up, boots up KDE and that's it. No login whatsoever, and no typing. Just waiting for it to boot up. Can I change this ? And how ? In the Boot-menu under the Mandrake Control Center: should I tell it not to launch the graphical environment when the starts ? I'll just try that this time.
  13. Hello, I've installed Mandrake 9.2. on a Toshiba Laptop 490XCDT, PII, 64 RAM, 2 GB hd Now, I've also installed OpenOffice (I've just before on Windows98 and am very pleased with it). But my system slows down immensly when using OpenOffice. I've read that KDE takes up a lot of memory, and I'm not into any fancy desktop environments, It's not the most important for me. I just need a working station for word-processing, spreadsheets, email, general internet use, and a music player. So is Blackbox an option, I've read it takes up a lot less memory. And if so, How do I change from my current KDE-environment to Blackbox (of Fluxbox.. or whatever else is "out there") ? Also, I cannot install from the internet, so I need to be able do download a program with my dekstop and burn it to cd-r (as I did to install OpenOffice for example). [the modem delivered by the provider remembers the ethernet-card, and only one ethernetcard, even after rebooting it]. Thanks in Advance.

Changing from KDE to Window Manager like Blackbox ?

Quote: Maxwell Rain, as far as office apps go, I don't use Open/Star office because it's resource hog! It's getting better though. I like both Abiword and Kword as word processors but mostly use Abiword since it is more versatile and easy on resources. If you need a spreadsheet program, Gnumeric is the king! We use it on a daily basis at our radio station and it has never crashed once! Tnx, I will try some of the word-processors you mentioned

    Installing IceWM

You are right, there shouldn't be any need to install IceWM on top of the already installed version. But I was under the impression that it didn't install, since I didn't see any options when rebooting. Turned out I had to change my boot-configuration to launch IceWM at startup. But : that didn't work... It just rebooted under KDE So I tried the Ctrl-Alt-Backspace... didn't work either. I just popped right back into loading KDE. So then I tried choosing "Failsafe". So then I got: Quote: Telling INIT to go to single user mode INIT: Going single user sh-2.05b# So this didn't work. Now what do I do ? ;(

    Installing IceWM

Okay, I donwloaded IceWM from the homepage, and restarted the install as stated in this page : http://jetblackz.nabaza.org/InstallingIceWM.html Quote: tar zxvf icewm-1.2.13.tar.gz cd icewm-1.2.13 ./configure --prefix=/usr/X11R6 --exec-prefix=/usr/X11R6 --with-imlib --without-xpm --enable-gradients --enable-shaped-decorations --enable-xfreetype --disable-corefonts make && make install cd .. && rm -fr icewm-1.2.13 icewm --version When I entered the command given there, I got this error : Quote: configure: WARNING : you should use --build, --host, --target configure : WARNING : invalid host type : ./configure configure: error : unrecognized option: --enable-gradients Try './configur --help" for more information [root@localhost icewm-1.2.13] # make && make install make[1]: gcc: command not found make[1] : *** [ymsgbox.o] Error 127 make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/maxwell/icewm1.2.13/src" make: *** [base] error 2 [root@localhost icewm-1.2.13]# cd .. && rm -fr icewm-1.2.13 [root@localhost maxwell]# icewm --version What did just happen ? ;(

Changing from KDE to Window Manager like Blackbox ?

Quote: As I suspected, the power of your system is limited, but enough to find a solution. Hopefull, 'cause no way in hell I'm going back to using Windows. I made the jump, and now I'm staying in

Changing from KDE to Window Manager like Blackbox ?

Quote: There are options out there for you, it depends on what you are able to do. Well, not that much. This is my very first Linux experience. Quote: Can you upgrade the hard drive to a larger one by any chance? Not really, my finances are quite low. Quote: If not, there are other desktops/GUI's that will work, as you mentioned. I like XFCE, which is not memory intensive and works with many KDE programs. So let me get this straight. I can install a GUI like XFCE, and then I won't be needing KDE anymore ? But there are KDE-programs that will run on XFCE ? Quote: There are other, less memory intensive word processing apps. out there. Open Office takes a lot of ram to run properly. Which one do you know of that have the same quality as OpenOffice ? As I stated before, I was very pleased running OpenOffice on my laptop while still using win98. I was a bit slow, but not as much as with Mandrake. Maybe if I install a different IceWM/Blackbox/.... it will run better ? But, if you know a better alternative, I would be very pleased Quote: By the way, what speed is your processor rated for? P II, 233 Quote: Either way, you do have options, but it depends on what apps. you would like to run and what your desktop needs are. Dekstop needs are rather simple : Office-packet, internet & email/newsgroups and working sound system (well, until I finally am able to afford a decent mp3-player to hook up to my stereo) Quote: There also is an article about your system and Linux, if your interested, I will look it up, if you would like. P.S. here is one; http://www.antlinux.com/Toshiba490XCDT/ Tnx, I've already found that article, but if you know of any more, I would be very grateful. Information is never useless. Now, I willl try to install IceWM... I will most likely be back here after that. Thank you for the replies
  19. I'm not sure this qualifies as "general Linux", if not, feel free to tell me so. Mandrake 9.2/KDE 3.1 on Toshiba Laptop 490XCDT I have a problem with my screen : when I turn of my screen and then turn it back on, i get a f$cked up screen. Screenshot with digi-cam here. Does someone know what the problem might be? I haven't found any information on this. If someone does know info on this, plz pass it on. Thanks.
  20. Some extra information. I tested it, by letting the screen go blank by itself. So that it flicks back on, when I push the mouse. Didn't give the funny screen then. So is it a Hardware problem maybe ?
  21. Yes, I've tried waiting (well 5 minutes anyway, that seemed long enough). The only time I get this screen is when I have turned it back on. "Lock screen" doesn't seem to have this problem. I basically turn my screen off quite a lot, because I want to avoid using screensavers.... I hate those things Have you heard of others with this problem? I might have to search "google" a little deeper ....

Linux Mandrake 9.2 - Starting after first install

Well call me Joe and slap me silly. I'm a bit embarrased of not seeing that Thanks But another question. I never had to use Disc 2 & 3 during installation. Am I not supposed to use these ? (I burned the ISO-images using Nero, as instructed on the Mandrake site)

Linux Mandrake 9.2 - Starting after first install

Same as Matmoo, I installed Mandrake 9.2. For me this was on a Toshiba Laptop (490XCDT) I am now currently looking at the KDE desktop. Looks great. But... what do I do next ? I have the Mandrake 9.2. Refernece Guide here next to me, and it tells me to launch a terminal emulator, to start learning about the Command Line. I'm supposed to look under Terminals in the KDE application menu... only problem is, nowhere in the KDE menu is there "Terminals". Tnx in advance.
